ajs510 122
Finally saw The Informant. Weird movie, had some laughs, glad I saw, wouldn't see again. Damon did a good job, good overall cast.My impression of it as well, the performances were great but the movie was pretty stupid. Not as stupid as some company giving that dude a CFO job though... Southern Buddhist 1
Partial rewatch of Crouching TigerThat movie is so, so great. The action, the Michelle Wow, and the way Ang Lee captures the color green.I could watch that a thousand times. I am so in love with Chow Yun Fat. A god among men.If you guys haven't seen John Woo's work from Hong Kong, put it on Netflix immediately: Hard Boiled, A Better Tomorrow (Parts I, II, and III), The Killer, A Bullet in the Head, etc. A Better Tomorrow, Part II has a scene at a wedding that I think might be the single most bullet-riddled scene in cinema history.I may be preaching to the choir, but I love these movies. Woo and Chow (Fat?) collaborated so brilliantly in HK, then they both came to the US. Neither has done anything on the same level in their English-language work, and I don't know why they haven't collaborated here.Last watched in theatre: Alice in Wonderland. Good, but Anne Hathaway ruined the sencond half of the movie for me with her huge red-black lips and her hands perpetually in surrender position. I spent the last hour wanting to rip off her arms and beat her with them.Watching on TV right now: Al Pacino's The Merchant of Venice. I'm very picky about Shakespeare, and this isn't good. They're letting the costumes do most of the work and belaboring the language horribly. The verse should ring and sing, not stagger and stumble. Oh, well, as soon as this turd is moved to DVD (why? eh, I just feel I should have a collection of Shakespeare films), at least I get to turn to the outstanding Patrick Stewart/David Tennant Hamlet.[Pacino just did the "if you prick us, do we not bleed?" speech. He delivered it beautifully, but it was clearly a set piece, because after the ringing clarity of it, everyone -- even he -- immediately fell back to mumbling haltingly. The occasional glint of gold only makes the crap look browner.]
JubilantLankyLad 1,957
Did you go to a midnight screening?no, but i had one at home. unfortunately, i didn't know about throwing the spoons, etc at the time. maybe i'll have another viewing tonight. This looks beyond awful, is part of the process of getting a refund talking someone else into paying to see it?i'd pay to see this movie. The Guardian called the film a mix of "Tennessee Williams, Ed Wood and R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet".it's really fairly outstanding how good this description is, except, i dunno.... more.....one of the reviews i read claimed that the main aim of the movie was to somehow convince the viewer that Tommy Wisseau is just an average, normal guy. timwakefield 68
I saw Kick Ass. I was underwhelmed.Really? I saw it last night and I thought it was amazing. I'm quite surprised that there hasn't been more discussion about it. I might even have to make a thread to get peoples' opinions.Hit Girl was totally out of sight. Her first scene (in costume) absolutely killed me. She's totally hilarious and just....outstanding. Nick Cage was also great. It was well-written, witty, well-acted, well-cast, unique, shocking, intriguing, emotional, etc. I seriously don't understand how you could have been underwhelmed. Like, I've never actually cared about a character in a superhero/action movie before, until Kick Ass (with Hit Girl). Yeah, there were some silly/ridiculous parts and the main character was a little annoying, but I still thought it was probably the best new movie I've seen in years. That also says something about how many new movies I've seen (not many), and also about how good the average movie is these days (terrible). But yeah, Hit Girl should get a fucking Oscar. king_tanner 84
Robin HoodVery entertaining and action packed movie, but.....I felt like I was watching some random medieval war movie, not Robin Hood. It is disappointing because the story is so awesome, and we are going to have to wait 10 more years before they try again with this movie. There was no steal from the rich give to the poor stuff (other than one quick scene), no archery competitions, no goofiness, it was a full on war movie. There wasn't really any story or character development either. The ending of the movie set up for a sequel but I don't think the movie is doing that great so there probably won't be a sequel. blehIron Man 2I really liked this movie. Again action packed, great sequel. Not as good as the first, but still extremely entertaining and worth seeing in the theater. Robert Downey Jr. is on fire right now, I'll watch him in anything, including gay porn if he decides to do that.1 complaint: The end battle scene sucked. I thought Mickey Rourke was a great villain, but the battle scene at the end lasted about 30 seconds. They could have edited down the chase scene with all the "robot iron mans" and made it more about Iron Man vs the main villain. The fight scene on the race track was better than the climax of the movie. Does Iron Man ever fight legit villains with their own super powers? So far he has only gone up against people who have a variation of the Iron Man suit. Did the movie explain how Mickey Rourke's character got those electric shock things coming out of his hands? I don't remember seeing him making those things.

Knowles' attempt to compare her to Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver seems absurd ("seems" because I haven't actually seen Kick Ass, but I feel fairly confident about this) and his proclamation that maybe more young girls will get into acting because of this is just weird. Why do we want more young girls to want to play hyper-violent characters?Anyway, I agree with Jubi from what I've read. I don't like the idea of her character.

From the adverts I thought it looked like a lame teen-comedy thing for kids. I didn't realise that it's an adult movie (not in the porno sense of 'adult', obviously). I now want to see it even less. I like gore and violence in some films, but it needs to have a purpose and at least a degree of humanity behind it. From Ebert's summary, this film sounds horrific in a totally pointless way. So, to Kick-Ass I say: "Thanks, but no thanks".On the other hand I watched All About Eve yesterday and it was fantastic.

JubilantLankyLad 1,957
Ebert nailed it. There were lots of good moments, neat characters, funny situations and lines, and a fairly novel premise. Then it all went to hell.I'm definitely far more sensitive to violence in movies (especially when involving children) now that I'm a dad. Interestingly, Nick and I recently watched the new Jack and the Beanstalk movie, and there are some fights scenes in that movie that I didn't really want him to watch either (although they're pretty neat - one has a full on ninja attack fight scene done as a pillow fight). The fighter in those scenes? Chloe Grace Moretz aka Hit Girl.
