Muzza86 2 Posted March 21, 2008 Share Posted March 21, 2008 Hi, ive started taking poker seriously and im set a plan to grind up a stake to quite a high amount from April - decemember.. im not going to submit figures because its not the point..My question is, i am 21 and IF i reach the target i am projecting by the end of the year i will consider trying to take poker seriously and mayb go fulltime... my problem is that my family, and parents alike have never been gamblers or anything and dont understand poker. i am old enough obviously to just ignore them, but i dont want to fall out with my family over it if they dont approve or agree with my choice if i make it.. how do i go about telling them my aspirations? there must be someone out there whos had samr orkward situation.. i fear they will not appproive and make my choice hard because they consider it "gambling" just like any game like roulette etc. hope i got my point across..any advice or experiences you've had would be appreciated. thankyou. How much is you roll now?What limits do you intend to play?Have you demonstrated that you can beat the game over a prolonged period of time? Not to be an ass but it's awkward not orkward and it's knew not new. I'm not a pro but I've read a lot on here, so here's some advice that's been repeated lots on here:1) Save up six months living expenses aside from your bankroll.2) Bankroll management is very important. e.g. 50 buy ins for nl. The more buy ins you have, the more you can withstand a downswing. Move down if you have to. 3) Demonstrate to your parents with detailed notes and stats to back up your decision. 4) Don't play when you are tired, on tilt or just not playing your A game5) Don't go on tilt. 6) Game selection. 7) I made this one up but have a backup plan. You will probably find a lot of useful info including when some of the pro players here were asking the same question or answering it for someone else. When someone makes a well thought out post, they frequently don't have the time to answer the same question week after week.I remember when Hanguk (one of the guys teasing you here) had the problem of explaing poker to his true love at that time.I don't know whether you are a cash game, sng, or tourney player, but the idea previously mentioned of recording stats from each session is a good one. you need to be able to "show" what your regular income will be. Obviously for a poker pro, it's usually not a clear cut $2000 a week....it will be swinggy, but it does need to balance over time and show regular winnings. For instance, if your goal is $50,000 in tourney winnings and you have a $100,000 score next week, then slowly leak back half of it until December, you'd make your $50,000 goal.....but you'd have no business playing for a living.If your story is that you've won a couple bar tourneys or won on your only trip to a casino.....you need get a real job........prontoGood luck Link to post Share on other sites

Go figure, now that we're on the outs, she's managed to shrug off the degeneracy of poker.It could be the fact that we're not together though, therefore she's not emotionally attached to the outcome.
