Vick12 0
TJIt's a pretty well known fact w/ most of the people I work with that I play cards and do quite well at it.The other day a father of one of the girls I give private volleyball lessons to came in w/ All In magazine. So during a break I picked up the mag and started to thumb through it. The following convo ensued...Father- "You play poker?"Me- A little....(and smile sheepishly)Him- I didn't know u played....what do u play?Me- Mostly tourneys...Him- So...u any good?Me- Well....put it this way....I made 3 times as much money playing cards last year as I did running this place.Him- (picks jaw off floor)...I guess I won't invite u to our home game!!!!I am obv an attention whore though!!!!=)I have personally found that 99% of the people I interact w/ find my card playing "fascinating" and most wonder why I don't do that all the time as my job... vbnautilus 49
TJ, Seems to me like it is important to understand why it is awkward for you. Are you ashamed of it on some level? I guessit seems to me like if you are fine and happy with what you do then you'd be happy to talk about it. I understand there's something of a stigma that goes along with the profession, but screw that, if you are successful at it and you love it then feel good about it and talk about it as much or as little as you want without feeling awkward. El Guapo 10
In the loan/financial arena you are going to have to disclose.Other than that, you are fairly young right? Just say you are a student, if they ask where tell them you do your courses online.Thats what I would do if I was you and really wanted to avoid the question.

mtdesmoines 2
So ive basically been a " Professional Poker player" for the last couple years.. I love my job, love the benefits.. etc etc... but I absolutely hate talking about what I do for a living because then people start to ask retarded questions and it puts me in an awkward situation. I guess im wondering how I can downplay the situation to deflect the attention off what I do for a living?? I just hate saying " I play poker for a living".. then the retarded questions like " do you really win??" and from a mortgage loan guy today " So tell me more about what you do??" People are generally very intrigued but I hate talking about it.. When im at a bar or a social setting, I hate talking about myself because I dont want to draw any attention to poker or where im at financially... I dont want to lie to people but I feel like that would even be better then having to have a 30 minute convo with someone about poker... when they arent going to understand anyways. Help plz."I'm not working full time right now."

ah2388 0
I really dont know why you feel like youll be looked down upon by your peers for playing poker professionally imo.I would simply say that you play poker for a living, it has allowed you some degree of financial freedom and you are beginning to explore other ideas such as real estate investment...etc..Im not really a TJ fan, but I can say that its quite apparent that you've worked really hard on your game in the time that I've been with FCP. That is by no means anything to be ashamed of.
theinvestor 0
You can get loans from banks when you play cards for a living? Me and my father were discussing this and he didn't think banks would make large loans to card players. Specifics pleaseeee? You are self employed. If you can document your income (tax returns) and have a strong credit history traditional financing shouldnt be hard to get. They go more on your credit score then anything. If you have credit issues you can always look at other short term financing like an equity based lender, that looks strictly at the deal and not at credit. There are many ways to purchase a home. You dont always have to get a traditional loan to do it.

How much do you have in our bank? $200KOK, we can loan you $200K.If you were to put this money into a short term cd and secure the loan with the cd as collateral, you would have no trouble doing a short term loan. Home loans are a little different, as they are generally sold on the secondary market, unless it is a small community bank

Potsie P 0
If you lived in Miami, you could just say, "I'm in the import/export business." Everyone says that, and no one knows what it means so they don't press.Besides, you really are in that business anyway...SHIIIIIIIIIIIP.
