I was just reading the blog over at poker stars, and it said: "The WSOP field will likely settle around 6600 people this year."HOLY CRAP!That means that I will likely take home somewhere in the 13 million range, after winning the event.Another interesting thing from the blog:"As of today, PokerStars awarded its 512th WSOP prize package for the 2005 WSOP. Now the number has surpassed the total number of entrants from 2000."This should make for an interesting field of players.

See, I don't like that. They should cap the numberof people that each website is allowed to have in the world series at like 200 or so.At the rate they are going Poker Stars is going to get 1,000 people in the main event.I mean, come on, thats a little excessive.Just look at the numbers too.1,000 X 12,500 per entrant = $12,500,000 in entry money spent. Thats insane. Seriously.

They have to raise the buy in amt to $25,000 like the WPT Championship. That would significantly cut the number of online qualifiers, while still having an enormous prize pool. 6600 people is just way too many for any poker tournament. At some point, they have to do something to limit the number of entrants. It has become a logistical nightmare. I'm sure ESPN and the WSOP were excited last year when they had 2500 players ( 3 times as many as the year before). It was great for poker. 6600 players is gonna be like a 3 ring circus. So-that would mean 3 1st days: 2 1st days last year was kind of strange. Now they'll have the field divided up into 2200 each of the 1st 3 days to get it down to a manageable level. Just raise the buy in.

No, the insane part is this is cost effective marketing for PS.

uhh, how are they going to control how many people a site registers? they're still paying the money.

At some point the bubble has to burst on the WSOP. The huge fields are just going to cheapen the event to the point where the top players don't want to participate anymore, and the poker world will look to a different measure of who is on top (does anyone really think Chris Moneymaker and Greg Raymer would stand a chance at a table full of top pros? Not saying they weren't great in their runs to the title, but the fact that neither has had continuing success in the game speaks volumes for the "Every dog has it's day" theory.)I think a more accurate measure of poker prowess is the National Heads Up Poker Championship, an invitation only, single elimination tourney. This is the future, and it's coming fast.

Your dreaming again. The world series will always be the premier event, and the bigger the field the more impressive the acomplishment. I for one think that the buyin of 10K is just fine. We already have a 25K buyin Championship, with the WPT so why do we need to see two events with the same guys you see every week. I don't know why there are pros out there who complain about all of the excess dead money at the WSOP. They are still going to pay the top 10% of the field, and if a pro doesn't feel like they can't make the top 10% on a consistant basis then they don't belong playing anyway. I for one think that this is going to be a cakewalk for me to take down the 10 - 13 million dolar first prize. By the way the party for my championship win will be at the Bellagio for any of you who want to come.

You raise the buy in, it will reduce the number of online qualifiers. If Poker stars sends 1000 people at $10,000 buy in, they won't end up sending that many players with a buy in around $25,000. They will still send alot. I just agree with some others that a field of 6600 or god forbid next year, 9000 players is just ridiculous.

Don't laugh, yesterday I was doing some google searches for satillite tourneys and one of the searches turned up some old forum postings on a site from like 2000. A guy named fossilman was dishing out advice to various people on strategy, etc. He talked about how you need to do X if you ever hope to win the WSOP. I'm sure some people laughed at him too back then. You never know which one of us will win it in the future.

Are you telling me that the casino's will decide having 10,000 people who like to gamble in their casino is a bad idea ever? Hell no, it's a business and 10,000 people may mean it takes a bigger degree of luck to win and might make the tourney victory more friendly towards one of the lucky 10000 satillite winners but that many people floating around in Vegas for a week has a huge economic impact.

Who cares how many people enter the WSOP Main Event. The mantra has always been $10,000 gets you some chips and a chair. I think capping the number of players is a stupid idea. I think thats what makes the Main Event so intriguing and that is the notion that anyone can win sort of like Baseketball.

I really think that heads up matches are the most irritating type to play or watch. Reason being is it comes down to who can get the luckiest hands. And yes, the WSOP bubble has burst. I don't see any one event in poker determining who's the best. It's really more a matter of who is doing best overall for the year that matters. There's no way that a game of skill can be fairly contested among 6600 people when you factor in the randomness of what two cards you happen to get.Look at CF last year. He was down to a single chip. He worked that into several thousand just by going all-in over and over a few hands. Then when he 'started playing' again he lost it shortly thereafter.

I'm dreaming again? You're the one spouting off about dancing your way through a 6600 person field. Confident in your abilities is one thing, but holy crap you're cocky. Seriously, I hope you do well and get your picture up on that wall, but the fact that you're #2376 of #6600 doesn't bode well for your chances. And anyway, my post had nothing to do with you, it had everything to do with the WSOP and how overblown it has gotten. As it is, I don't think you can judge a players greatness by one tournament over the course of one week in a players life. Look at the list of WSOP champions from the 90's and name 5 who have had a lasting impact on the game:1990 - Mansour Matloubi (who?)1991 - Brad Dougherty (who?)1992 - Hamid Dastmalchi (who?)1993 - Jim Bechtel (who?)1994 - Russ Hamilton1995 - Dan Harrington (1)1996 - Huck Seed 1997 - Stu Ungar (2)1998 - Scotty Nguyen (3)1999 - Noel Furlong (who?)Moneymaker hasn't won a tournament since the Main Event, same for Raymer, same for Varkonyi. They were proficient amatuers who happened to have the sun shining on them at the right moment, and haven't been able to duplicate the glow. The WSOP is just one tournament, it's the same thing as claiming Shawn Micheal was the world's greatest golfer in 2003 because he had a good tournament that happened to be the PGA Championship. I'm kinda all over the place with my criticism here, but I think you get the point (even if you disagree with it).

No it's not. PS isn't fronting the money for these entiries. While some of these may have been freeroll wins, I'm sure the overwhelming majority of them were sattellite tourneys that are long paid for by entry fees.

Actually, I think they would just add another round or two to the satteliites and have more of them. The amount of people will remain the same for at least the next couple of years, after that I think interest will die off...or at least all those people who learned from tv who thought they were going pro will move onto the next fad.

I don't know what the problem is, not really cocky just the truth, and when I win I am going to jump up on the table and do the crabler dance. By the way watch out for my race from $15.50 to 13 million thread comming this July.Actually I was watching the WSOP on ESPN the other day, and they had all of these people saying how they knew they were Dead money, guess what they ended up being.

6600 of the greatest poker players in the world!i almost typed that without laughing
Well lets not say 6600 of the best players in the world, more like 4000, with 2000 rich people who just got done watching the WPT. But still why should you walk into any poker game planning to loose. I don't plan to loose. If I come in 6599th then I come in 6599th, but I truly do not plan on it. I plan on winning. Will I, the odds are definitely against it, but it doesn't mean that I shouldn't plan to win. Do you think that Daniel doesn't walk into every tournement planning to win. Someone has to win, and I figure it might as well be me. Just think about how you will all laugh when you look back at these threads and say Jesus this guy called his shot. By the way FCP party at the Wynn after I win lol.
