What Do You Do When You Run Bad?

Recommended Posts

What do you do differently after running bad? Do you play a different game or a different limit? Drop down a limit or two? Change from NL to limit or PL or the other way around? Does a cash game player try a few tournaments or the other way around? Try a few sit n go's or HU matches? Even just not play for a certain amount of time?Just trying to find out what everyone else does or tries to do to stay on a positive track.

Move up five levels and play outside my roll
actually, today i ran really ****ing awful and i started yelling at my computer and doing play by play for all the hands i was playing. it was really funny about ten minutes later when i calmed down and realized i was yelling to myself

If I'm running bad in cash, I generally play SNG's or drop down a level - unless there are no more levels to drop down.If I'm running bad in SNG's, maybe I'll play a little cash or an MTT.Sometimes I'll go to a "high stakes" play money table and shove every hand to burn off steam - fun for building other people's play money BR's and better than moving up six levels and losing my real bankroll.

I was running pretty bad and seemed to be 24/7 tilt. I quit for 2 weeks(not online, i make money live and loose it online) today was my first day back after the break. I won $600, so the break worked for me, I was much more relaxed, and importantly, I REALLY wanted to play.On a short term period I dont know, I tried everything, nothing worked so I took a break.

When I'm running REALLY badly this is exactly what I do, those 5 million play chips I made all those years ago have to be useful for something.

If you have a solid game and confidence, and practice solid bankroll management, then you just keep on playing....This question can go a lot of ways though (as in does running bad mean 'tilting hardcore' in your question?)...depending on your personality and your level of frustration, sometimes...maybe take a little break, maybe watch some videos and study more, and/or talk over hands with friends (well thats a given, you should do that constantly anyways).Checky made a good post somewhere a bit ago about how its nice to know how to play a few different games well enough that if you're running bad, or just not feeling confident atm, you can go play a different game and enjoy yourself and maybe not feel the pressure you've built up in your normal game (thats a paraphrase, he said it much better).edit - if you're really tilted, instead of continuing to play atm, go to .02/.04 limit or something micro and raise every single time it comes to you for a while, until you feel better or suckout or w/e. That has worked for me, and if you post that you are going to do it on here, a few people will join in with you and that helps make it fun beyond being just therapeutic.

I just take a 15 minute break, get a boxing bag or pillow and just punch the shit out of it. It releases all my anger, then i lie down...and usually come back feeling pretty good.but i DONT play different games or change limits, if your too angry to play at the limits your usually playing at then you just shouldnt play fullstop.

When I start running bad/losing I always cash out a good chunk of my recent profits. It seems to make me refocus. Sometimes you can't do anything about running bad, but sometimes the cards aren't the problem. But then again I've cashed out 7k in the last year and a half, all from grinding low stakes, and at the moment I don't really have that much online right now. I can only wonder where my poker BR would be had I never cashed out.

usually if it's just one session, i'll take an hour or two off, watch something on tv that makes me LOL, and come back in a better mood. if i'm in a casino, i have a smoke and go for a walk, and if it continues, i'll leave.if it's a week-long deal, i'll usually take a day off and when i come back, play a different game. usually i go from split pot games to lowball games to HE-games in rotation cuz they all require different thinking and bad habits don't transfer over so well.whining in the challenge thread works too :club:

I start drinking Knob Creek heavily. Then I crank some tunes. Then I post here, offering freebies and stakes. Better to give my money away to forum members than total strangers.Rinse and repeat.
