Rich People And Poker

Recommended Posts

I just turned 18 and have 2 jobs. My plan was to build up my bankroll and at 21 go to Las Vegas and work on becoming a poker pro. But I hear people say that only rich people that have money to spend will make it to become a poker pro. It this true? I always felt that if u had the dedication you could become a poker pro. But I'm thinking twice. Non the less i'm going to keep doing what i'm planning. But I want pplz opinion on this.

Being a poker pro isnt everything you think it will be.. its not the glitz and glamour of TV final tables.. etc.. Long hard grinding in a casino isnt fun and many people cant do it for a long period of time. Rich people dont become poker pros because they have money.. in fact its usually the opposite.. usually you turn to poker because you NEED money.. You wont hear too many stories of entrepenuers(sp?) selling their businesses to grind poker for a living... A few months ago Daniel said something to the effect of " you play really long hours when you coming up in the poker world so you don't have to grind poker for the rest of your life".. now he gets to enjoy playing golf all the time and playing the occasional tourney.Sorry if I rambled.. Im good at that.

I think, you need to re-think your plan.U should not be saving up money from a job to use for a poker roll. where and what limits are u going to start at? how did you get experience playing those limits and how many hands and hours have u logged to see a decent ROI?bascially, you should be treating it like any other aspect of life. start slow and build.its the best way to learn and to stay above water.

well. my transportation is good now.. but it cost me a pretty pennie, plus lawyer fees. so I'm out 12k right now from my BR.which leaves it at about the size of a Burger King whopper. just enough to grind 1/2NL lol.

Within your 3 years of going to Vegas you need to really become comfortable with the game. Deposit $50 - $100 of your pay check and try and build your bank roll grinding out lower limits. The last thing you want is to save up all this money and return a week later completely suicidal (i think we've all been here) having lost your roll.Best of luck, it will be interesting, keep this thread updated if you can.

alright im gonna throw out a serious response.DO NOT... I REPEAT.... DO NOT work for 3 years... save up 25k and go to vegas. PLEASE DONT DO THIS.INSTEADwork for 3 years... hopefully you wont have to work 2 jobs the whole time.. but do what u gotta do.During the next month, read this forum, the strategy forums, daniel's blog, etc. I dont know how much poker exp. u have but probably read a book or two. When you have an idea... deposit 200$ onto full tilt poker.Play .05/.10 and follow bankroll management. (search for this)keep your poker winnings aside from your real life winnings and build your bankroll.glhf tp/mm

OP Welcome to the forum. It was only a couple of months ago that I had the EXACT same plan as you. I figured, as soon as I graduated high school, I would skip college and work a full time job and try to save up as much as possible in a 3 year span so that I would be sufficiently rolled to hit Vegas as soon as I turned 21 and turn pro. When I told my plan to friends and family they laughed at me but I figured, "Hey what do they know! They don't play poker" But I myself slowly started to realize how idiotic the plan is. Vegas would eat me alive and I would blow through my roll in a couple of months, no doubt about it. So instead, do what others here have suggested and start building from the ground up. Read books, post hands, study the game and prove to yourself that your game is good enough to make a consistent profit.Wouldn't you rather find out you suck at poker by blowing through a couple hundred bucks online than 3 years worth of life savings in Vegas? The most important advise I think me or anyone can give you is STAY IN SCHOOL. This may sound funny coming from me because I'm 18 myself, but it's advice worth following trust me.

This one brought me out of hiding. I don't post much these days but I check in from time to time.OP, do yourself a big favor and reconsider your plan. We all joke about TPMM because it is a joke. Could it happen, sure, prolly not though. Stay in school work hard and enjoy playing poker. Would you really want your life depending on weather or not some guys calls you down with the nut floosh draw against your flopped set and hits....time and time and time again? If you're just looking for a way to get rich poker aint it brother.Having said all that, do what you need to do, just leave yourself some wiggle room in case things go bad.GLK

One day you guys will meet a nice girl, get married, have kids and think back at how things used to be.Create some memories.Take a shot.Failure is not death. It's the only time you will have a chance to blow your whole wad and still get back on your feet pretty fast.Nothing worse when you're older than regretting not trying something when you had the chance. You're world will expand when you have done things your way and learned from it. Both good and bad.Go for it.Why would anyone live to grind? Later sure, but to start?

It was for this guy.http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080206/od_nm/train_dc_1Also to the OP, I assume you do plan on actually playing poker during the next 3 years. Plenty of time to fine tune the plan. I would suggest doing what others have mentioned as far as your development is concerned (deposit around $200, try and build it into something while learning everything you can about the game). When you go busto deposit $200 more and try again. At the same time you can be saving for Vegas. I can speak from experience that BG is right. If this is something that you really want to do you will regret it later if you don't give it a shot. Just be sure to make the proper preparations in the meantime. Give yourself the best chance for success.

Please don't listen to all the jokers on the forum. My advice would be to deposit 250 dollars and grind out 10NL. I did that a year ago and got up to 200NL but had to withdraw it. You can do it if you study and play enough.

I think most everyone will agree that it's far easier to make a living at poker by playing online than it is to make a living playing poker live.
I do better in $/hr playing in Vegas than online. I don't think I want to live in the desert, though.

Alright so the 2 most important things said in this topic is the following:1) Deposit money on an internet poker site and play the small limits there, build that bank roll up. (I wouldn't recomend $200 like everyone else, I would say $50 or $100)2) Go to College....

I agree. I don't think I have BalloonGuy kind of cash, but I'm about his age and have done very well in my career. I don't regret playing golf every day for 5 years in college (why else would it take 5 years?) because it's what I loved. I don't regret spending 2 seasons on the North Shore of Oahu surfing, because it's what I loved. When one gets older and has the reality of job, kids, wife, etc., the time for dreaming, alas, is often left behind. Will I ever get to live on a sailboat cruising the carribbean? Probably not now that I am 45 and have another baby on the way. So I'm glad, when I was a kid, I did whatever I wanted and didn't fret about the future or anything like BR management. Live a little! That is all...
