herokid7 0
So, this is a sermon manuscript for the sermon I had to preach the other day in my homiletics class. I just thought it would be interesting to post here and hear your thoughts. It's pretty much word for word except for some parts where I had to clean up a little bit so it would read easier. Enjoy and flame away. "When the Righteous Cry." Good morning. You can turn to Psalm 34:17 while I pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank for this day. Thank you for all of us getting here safely. Lord, as we learn your Word today, help us to comprehend it, allow us to learn it, and help us to live it. God, thank you for always being there for us, even through the hard times. We love you, Lord. In Jesus' Name, Amen.A couple of years ago, I was in my church's internship. One of the requirements of this internship was that we all had to do a project. This project was to be something we were passionate about. For instance, one girl decided to publish a magazine for the church. She put together various articles and music reviews and what-nots and put the magazine together herself. Another guy led what he called a "Java Night" where basically the youth had a coffeehouse type of event, thank drank coffee while skits and such were put on for them. Well, the internship was starting to come to a close and my friend, Danny, and I had not yet done a project. One day, we were having a discussion about Christian rock music and how when it first came out, it was very controversial amongst churches, because it was "the devil's music" and "Jesus wouldn't listen to it." But, now Christian rock is pretty much accepted by most churches. There's not a youth group in the country that doesn't have it playing as you walk in. So, we started to wonder what the next controversial thing would come out that at first would be rejected, then finally accepted, by churches. We were both pro wrestling fans, and I jokingly said, "Christian wrestling." Danny then informed me that he had heard that a Christian wrestling show existed. I laughed and, once again jokingly, said "We should do a Christian wrestling show for our project." He, to my surprise, agreed. Before I knew it we were sitting in our pastor's office pitching the idea of a Christian wrestling show to him. We told him it would cost about $3000, but he had already told us money was not a factor. He was iffy at first, but then agreed. Now, we had to start promoting the show. This is where the hard part started. We ran into a lot of opposition for our idea. As we went around to the area churches, we were also met with varying responses. Some people laughed at us. Some people patronized us, telling us they were interested, but obviously they were not coming. One youth pastor even stated that he thought he "was being punk'd." Pastor Allen even said he met some opposition as he went to bat for us. He said that he had some confrontations with some people who didn't think it was appropriate for the church to have wrestling in it. At one point even telling someone that "there were other churches she could go to, if she didn't feel like being at this one."As if all that wasn't hard enough, Danny's father had a heart attack at around that time, and for a few days I had to do some of the promotions by myself, while he was at the hospital. Thankfully, his father pulled through and he was able to rejoin me a week or two later. But, we weren't out of the woods yet. One day, as I was doing some work at the church, I bumped my shin on a trailer hitch. A few days later, a knot the size of my fist grew on my shin in the middle of the day, I couldn't even put any weight on it. The doctor informed me I should keep off of it for about a week, and gave me some pain medicine and some crutches. But, I couldn't do that because the wrestling show was that Saturday. So, the day of it, even though my leg was bruised from my knee to my foot, I put on some long pants and limped to help set up.We had originally planned to have the show outside, as to at least ease some tensions about the wrestling show being inside the sanctuary. So, we had our fellow interns there early that morning to start moving chairs outside. We had moved several hundred chairs outside, when we realized the wrestlers with the ring were running late. One hour late. No wrestlers. Two hours late. No wrestlers. The interns were growing antsy because they hadn't eaten yet, because we kept expecting the wrestlers to get there, and we wouldn't let them leave. So, after much aggravation a limped outside and sat down and propped my aching leg on a table. Danny was two seconds behind me. I looked at him and said, "What do we do?" He said, "Pray." So, we did. No sooner had we finished praying the wrestlers and the ring arrived. The next problem was the wrestlers said the show couldn't be done outside because of the rocks on the ground, so we had to move inside the sanctuary. We got Bro. Allen's okay, and we had the show inside. Long story short, we had about 300 people show up, and 16 of them gave their lives to the Lord, at a Christian professional wrestling show.I tell you that story, because I want you to know that we were very stressed out. We felt the world was against us, like everyone was attacking us. But, we didn't lash out. We didn't fight back. We let the Lord guide us and protect us, and He justified us. Now, World Impact Wrestling does Christian wrestling shows all across the country, with about 8000 people at those shows giving their lives to Christ. All because Danny and I let the Lord guide us through those hard times. Let's look at the text. Psalm 34:17-22 says, "The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those that are crushed in spirit. A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; he protects all the bones not one will be broken. Evil will slay the wicked; the foes righteous will be condemned. The Lord redeems his servants; no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him." God, thank you for these verses. Thank you for guiding us through the hard times. Thank you for loving us, in Jesus' name, amen. David knew that God would deliver him through hard times. God can deliver us through hard times, too. But, there are some keys we need to remember to not get in God's way. Either God will see us through the hard times, or we will have to see ourselves through them. Let's look at some of these keys. The first key is that we need to remember that times of stress are not always our fault. There's this demented theology or theory out there that whenever we go through a hard time, it's somehow some sin that we let go unnoticed, or that we've made God mad in some way. That's not always the case. Sometimes, sure you need to do some introspection and see if there's any sin that we might need to address in our lives, but not always. Look back at the text. It says that "the righteous cry out" and that "a righteous man may have many troubles." It doesn't say that a sinful man may have many troubles, or a heathen may have many troubles, but the righteous. Sometimes, things aren't fault, God's fault, or Satan's fault. Some things just happen. My pastor told a story awhile back, he was going to preach in California for a few days, so he and his family were spending the day together. Well, as everyone was getting ready to go out to eat, he said he heard his oldest son yell, "Oh My God!" and then a loud crash. They ran into the room, and apparently their three year old had gotten into one of the cars cranked it, put it in drive, and proceeded to drive straight through the front door. The next day, his ten year old broke his arm while he was playing, the day after that his 16 year old drove his car into a ditch. Pastor Allen realized though, that these were just accidents. Sometimes stuff just happens. It's not always our fault. The next key is to let God protect us. The text says that "the Lord delivers him from them all, he protects all his bones" and that "the foes of the righteous will be condemned." A lot of times, when people are attacking us, we feel the need to defend ourselves, or fight back. We don't need to do that. The Lord said he would protect us. Remember the story of the Fiery Furnace, Nebuchadnezzar gave Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego an ultimatum. Either bow down to the image he created, or be thrown in the Fiery Furnace. How did they respond? In the book of Daniel chapter 3, verse 16 they said, "We do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter." They went to say that they knew if they were thrown into the furnace that God would rescue them. And God did. Another story I remember is about my pastor's father. The county I live in, Pearl River, is a dry county, you can't sell liquor there. But, every 4 or 5 years or so someone tries to get it on the docket to make it a wet county. Well, my pastor's father was having a debate with a woman who wanted the dry county lifted in front of the city council. He would give a bunch of reason why he thought a wet county would be bad for the area, and then she would get up and just attack his character. He wouldn't defend himself, just looked straight ahead and continued to give reasons why he thought the wet county was a bad idea. Well, within a year that woman's husband left her for another woman, and her son was killed in a tragic car accident. Was that God's doing? I don't know. But, I do know that in 1 Samuel chapter 24 verse 6, David knew that "raising his hand against the Lord's anointed" is dangerous. When we become followers of Christ, we become the Lord's anointed, and we gain His protection. The next key we need to remember is prayer. The text says that, "no one will be condemned who takes refuge in him." If there is something on your heart, tell God about it. I've heard it said that when you pray for something you don't have to pray for it again, because God's on it. That may be true, but I think that God wants an honest relationship with us, and if the same thing is on your heart that was the last you prayed, pray about it again. Don't worry, He's God, I've heard He's got good patience. I have complained to some of my friends about the same things time after time again, and never once have they told me, "We're tired of hearing this, just get over it already." If my human friends that care about me will listen to the same problems day after day, don't you think God desires to hear them as well? Of course!I want you to be able to allow God to deliver you is times of stress. Everybody bow your heads, and I want to share a skill with you that I learned in the internship I went through. A lot of times, when we go through stress, out minds are constantly racing. Well, we're going to do as David did. We're going to write a Psalm. The thing about writing is that it forces your mind to slow down. So, right now, we all have a picture of what we think Jesus looks like in our heads, I want you to put that picture in your mind right now. If there's anything you want to tell Him, now is your opportunity. Write down your Psalm. Start with a praise to Him. Tell Him about who He is. Be generous with your words. Now thank Him for those times He's brought you through times of stress. Is there something that's on your heart right now? Tell Him about it now. Be honest. Now, thank Him for taking care of that need. Tell Him that you love Him. And we're going to end the same way we started, with a praise."Lord, thank you for your presence with us. Thank your for never leaving or forsaking us. Thank you for loving us in ways that we don't deserve to be loved in. Thank you for being our protector. Thank you for always listening. Thank you for delivering us through hard times. We love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen."

herokid7 0
So many commasYeah, there were a lot of commas. But, our professor wanted the sermon written out word for word, written as close to the way we would speak it. It was hard writing the same exact thing I had said word for word and have it read understandably without a lot of commas. I guess I should have put a semicolon in there or two...but my apologies. BenSavage 0
I changed your quote- sure- but that doesn't make it any less true. you are, in fact, a tool.Ok then, you broke a commandment. You better repent quickly. Don't want to have God send you the seizurez. And it is not true at all, you may believe I am a tool, but I never said I was. And you misquoted me. Thus you have sinned against your God. At least Herokid actually tries to understand different views, instead of personal attacks. And I was serious about the sermon, good writing, but I don't know your oratorical skills. I am a tool because I disagree with you, and I am able to think critically. I guess I am a tool then! And your job on Earth is to stop others from going to Hell, Owen Wilson? Character attacks don't do that. You could learn a lot from this philosopher I know, I don't think he ever called anyone a tool, or told them to die. I believe he told them to live and love each other. You might of heard of him. But the way you attack my character, I would be surprised if you do. It's hard writing a sermon because sermonizing is spoken art, and not a written. So, I actually like it better verbally than I do when I read it. It just works better spoken. I realise you don't intend it to read this way, however it essentially says that Danny's father's heart attack was no more than an inconvenience to you. But, we weren't out of the woods yet. One day, as I was doing some work at the church, I bumped my shin on a trailer hitch. A few days later, a knot the size of my fist grew on my shin in the middle of the day, I couldn't even put any weight on it. There's this demented theology or theory out there that whenever we go through a hard time, it's somehow some sin that we let go unnoticed, or that we've made God mad in some way. That's not always the case. You are speaking with a little too much authority there. Some people believe exactly that based on their interpretation of the bible/Christianity. You are saying that your interpretation is correct and theirs is demented? I appreciate you go on to talk about the 'righteous man may have troubles', but nobody is without sin, correct?Sometimes, sure you need to do some introspection and see if there's any sin that we might need to address in our lives, but not always. Look back at the text. It says that "the righteous cry out" and that "a righteous man may have many troubles." That's a link to our website if you want to check it out. Basically, our approach is that wrestling is just an exciting way to tell a story. His approach is similar to ours, and he's worked with us before as a kind of mentor to us, but we are two different things. Like I said, we want use wrestling to tell a story. But, the story we tell always has a Christian message or theme. As you watch the show, you might not notice anything different from any wrestling show, but at the end, one of our Christian wrestlers or one of the leaders at the show will share a testimony and explain the wrestling show's storyline and how it relates to a biblical story, or how to apply it to our lives. Anyway, the website will tell you more. Not everything is updated though, just so you know. Be sure to check out our free gift. And I appreciate the constructive criticism, and I agree with you on some points and disagree on others. But, I guess that's the way it goes. Thanks for the evaluation though.

Loismustdie 0
Ok then, you broke a commandment. His name is Jesus Christ and Herokid is 100x closer to His example than you are.God Bless,Tool Ok, now as requested many a time, die, a thousand times over.

But, I guess that's the way it goes. Thanks for the evaluation though. No problems. As I said it's hard to convey tone in a written forum, so I'm hoping it's taken positively.Which points did you disagree with?

solderz 0
Ok, now as requested many a time, die, a thousand times over.I'm not exactly shocked by you being a douche, but usually you don't degrade yourself this much. Just falling back on cheap personal attacks is below even you. At least I thought it was...Guess I was wrong. Why is it the guys that always preach about morality have no morals?
