missIdaho 1
I made the mistake of letting my sister talk me into teaching our family members how to play poker. I used to be preschool teacher, so I would have the patience to do it, but after having to explain what the "little blind" was to my Mom for the 100th time, I never wanted to look at a deck of cards again. I have quite a few friends who have also asked me to teach them how to play, but I am now seriously having second thoughts about putting together a game to show them how. Does anybody have suggestions on the easiest way to go about teaching other people?

Frills 0
if you're really miss idaho, there could be some tactics you could use, although I don't think mom's would approve
nealdo17 0
Im not sure. Mike Sexton said it only takes a minute to learn, but a lifetime to master. Are you trying to teach them how to play or teaching them how to master the game. I would go in this order:1.EV2.Implied Odds3.Game theory4.Blind structure/betting5.Hand rankingsIf you follow this path. . .they will never F*^ing bother you again just after step 1!

nealdo17 0
Also be sure to teach them the "krablar"! It is simply the winningest hand for me online! When I dont have it!P.S. Whoever started the Krablar craze I think you are brilliant. People are hooked on it as if it has magical powers. I think the dance gimmick is how you sold them on that one. I am not kidding, you are genious!Im really not kidding. I do appreciate it.
JFarrell20 1
yeah i love playing with my brothers and sister. Especially when I tell everyone at the beginning "the chips are worth 10, 20, 30, & 40...light to dark". Real complicated, right? My sister constantly grabs 3 reds (60) and says "Is this 80"? lol. Like every hand she's in.None of them understand that the minimum bet is the big blind or more. We'll be playing a 20 dollar BB and somone will bet 10 into the flop. Boy, this doesn't get annoying! And my other brother...if he wants to be 160...instead of simply putting in 4 of his 18 black chips, he gets cute and has to put in a "colorful" stack, so I have to count it every F.uckin time to make sure he's not "miscalculating" because he does that a lot. They're starting to understand the concept of the SB, BB, and blind increases...lol. They still dont know who is first to act after the flop even though every single time I say "SB acts first". This is usually followed by "Who was the SB this hand?" lol. I love them and all but...it's hard to even enjoy myself.Oh the best part was when my older brother said "skill doesnt matter, it's all luck" lol. I told him, "well luckily, i play on the internet and make money all the time." lol. I was short-stacked with KQ and i bumped it up to build the pot up and it folded except for him. Flop comes Q J 3 . I check, he bets, I move all in. He says "i know you dont have anything" and calls and flips J 9. he hits a 9 on the turn to take the lead then the river brings a 3 and he goes to scoop the pot then i realized I'd made Queens up to take the pot. He then said "You got lucky to hit that three". I said "No, i moved in with teh best hand and you called". I'll do that every time. He said "yeah but i was ahead on the turn, to which I said "So, I was equally as likely to pair my kicker on the turn as you". I also said, sarcastically, "Boy, was I lucky to raise and build that pot up pre-flop, then let you bet into me then come over the top with the best hand. Boy did I get lucky." lol.I kept rubbing this in as later my sister folded a hand to a raise and it turned out to be a correct fold and I said "Gee, Molly, you got lucky to realize that you were behind there!" lol. I think he started getting the picture.

Huh? I'm still trying to wrap my brain around that one.

Shocktastik 0
Just give them the bare bones basics,. Hand rankings, blinds (explain once), how betting works etc... Then just play. Correct them as they go if they make any structural mistakes but you don't have to teach them the ins and outs. They're gonna learn it faster if they just learn as they play. That way they'll learn and you'll have some fish!Shock

Socrates 0
I learned the basics from a friend and then learned how to really play by watching the pros on TV. Maybe I'll make a "poker tape" will be mandatory viewing before I'll teach anyone.I'm not trying to flame you or start anything on this thread, but if you learned to "really" play from watching t.v. - I would suggest you find a few good books to see how terribly wrong what you are watching on t.v is. While those individual hands may work out for the pros, there are hundreds of hands you don't see per episode that lead up to the plays they make in the hands you do get to see.Sklansky - Small Stakes Hold 'Em & Theory of PokerHarrington - Harrington on Hold 'Em - I assume you only play Hold 'Em as you only reference "poker" &" t.v." and no specific game.I think you should be honest with your family and tell that you need to get some lessons (i.e. reading books before teaching anyone else bad habits)

I actually agree with you that the edited version you see on TV is not the type of play that anyone should model their game after. But, like a lot of people I am a very visual learner and when I first started playing it really helped me understand the game better.
Socrates 0
Cool, understanding is the first step. Now you need to move it along with some practical knowledge. In all honesty, if you are going to tech people how to play by actually playing some games, teach them limit. This will keep the allinitis at bay.

Socrates 0
It will be different for everyone. I've taken so much from so many different books it is hard to tell. Small Stakes Hold Em is a good place to start and Theory of Poker is a good way to learn about the math and probablities in general and also examines game theory. If you're really into tournament style NLHE, then pick up Harrington on Hold 'EmThere are some other avid learners on here who can post some good suggestions. You may want to go to the books section of the forrum and browse around. If you don't find what you are looking for, just post what games you play, what limits and others will help out.
