how do i know how good i am?

Recommended Posts

I've been cleaning up small local tourneys fairly regularly. About as regular as I can while figuring in luck at least. I've been playing in 10-40 player games (not internet) with a buyin of $20-30. The money isn't great but the other players give me a decent race to the end.I can't afford to play in any $1000 games or anything, well I can afford it if I save my winnings but the wife usually spends what I win since it's a good tradeoff for letting me out with the boys. What I was thinking of was driving up to Michigan or down to Chicago where I hear they have some satillite games going on and trying to play in some of those. However my main fear is that I'll be spending 10 hours in the car to play with other guys no better then the guys playing in my hometown.I could try the internet, but I'm no good at playing on a computer. In a live game it's fun to sit there with a group of guys and play, but on the internet I quickly grow bored just waiting for the cards and analyzing the situation. Plus I'm good at reading peoples attitudes and expressions in a live game.Where is the best place to find the most skilled players at $50 games or so?

the wife usually spends what I winWOW. You are really nice to your wife. Kudos points.
Well, with 20-30 buyins the money I win isn't a big deal. I just like winning. I took 1st Saturday out of 29 people and got $290, so she's getting something nice for Mothers Day... :club:

I play in the 5-10 at the Harrah's in East Chicago, and it is usually a pretty soft game. Nice people though, don't go to Trump!!! The competition is usually not very good, but that is good for you!!! Have never played in any tourney's there yet, I am pretty much a Limit player, except for SNG's online. Good Luck!!!

I agree about playing online being pretty boring, but it really is a good measure for your level of play. As for trying some bigger tournaments, it's pretty simple. You'll never know unless you try.

The only big tourney near me is up in Green Bay and you need to be there a few hours ahead in order to reserve a seat. You can't reserve it ahead of time.

Generally the rule is that you're no where as good as you think you are. :)I mean the only real way to figure out where you stand is to sit with the best possible for your bankroll and see if you sink or swim. If you sink, you go back with your tail between your legs and know that you still have learning to do. The key to this game is to be confident and humble at the same time. Thats a tough thing to balance but I think thats why DN is so successful.

Well, since the week after the superbowl these are the 10 games I played in.Money Place # of players $60.00 1 8 $150.00 1 13 $(20.00) 5 8 $10.00 4 20 $(30.00) 27 43 $(20.00) 7 18 $125.00 3 32 $(50.00) 17 17 $30.00 5 23 $265.00 1 29------------------------ $520.00I think that's pretty darn good. Only 4 times I didn't win money, and of the 6 I did win there were some decent sized prizes.Online is tempting, but I tried it and NL is just not quite right when you can't look at the other guy. Reading people is a big advantage I have and I don't like giving it up.I've heard that moving up in limits in limit hold'em doesn't really mean people are much better, it's just more money. I didn't know if the same was true for NLHE.

I'd say that's a pretty good result :)Keep it up for a couple of months, then try a bigger game. You'll get a good idea of how good you are if you can handle the transition

Not to be rude, but why is that? Also to some degree it's fun to know peoples names and BS when I'm not in a hand. But online I get bored and want to play since I view it more as a game and less as a sport. I'm not knocking people who like online play. But I can't concentrate and wait for hands and pay attention. I always get bored and surf for porn in the other window... :club:

Any good NLHE books? Or videos? I started reading super system but someone said it was outdated so I stopped. I watched a Howard Lederer video, I learnt a lot from it but that was ages ago.

I have to say, go and see what it's like at a real casino. Get some of your buddies and make a weekend of it. I'm sure that the wife could find something else to do while you're playing. It'll give you a nice little trip and satisfy the curiousity. I make a trip at least once a month up to AC. I'm lucky in the fact that my g/f enjoys playing the nickle slots, a nickle at a time. (I know, but it makes her happy. She'll play more if she wants.) And normally we'll find a group to go with. It's all fun and we have a good time.

Sure, like watch our 3 kids! :club: Oneida in Green Bay has 100 player tourneys for $65 which is exactly what I'm looking for. However I'd need to take the day off of work as it's on Wednesday night and in order to reserve a seat you need to be there like 4 hours before it starts and be playing o ther table games.

Online is tempting, but I tried it and NL is just not quite right when you can't look at the other guy.this is my favourite thing to hear people say.
I don't understand why you always give this response when people say they prefer playing live. You can't deny the fact that some people get good reads on their opponents. Sure, some people just like to think that they are better live, but there are cases where it is actually true. I don't know if you haven't been to a casino in a long time (or you might be one of the 1000 underage players on this forum), but many players have obvious tells at NL tables that would not show up if they were just typing bets into a computer 3000 miles away.If this guy uses his intuition to exploit these weak players, that is no better or worse than your use of math and game theory to play online.

here's the real question to determine your skill: how would you play the Krablar in the cuttoff to an UTG raise of 4x the big blind when the action is passed to you?If you said "smooth call" you need to head to Vegas RIGHT now...

So what are the family vacation plans for this summer? If you said 'Vegas!' you have answered correctly. Anything else is the wrong answer. But on a more serious note, you should be able to find a weekend game geared to your level. If not, take the day off work. Honestly, the only way to find out how good you are is to play. And you have to decide how badly you want to know. I know that for me, outside of my weekend jaunts to AC I'll also take off a wed-fri from work and hop a plane to Vegas every few months. Fly back Sunday. Just because I can. So taking a wednesday off is easy for me to decide to do. Granted I don't know your work, but with me if I schedule it I can make it happen.

Read Harrington on HoldemA must read.
Harrington on Hold'em is specifically for tournament play. I havne't gotten it yet but i hear that it's a great book. Yeah, i'd suggest reading that as a next step

Does he deal mostly with tournament play? I could care less about cash games. I play about 99% tournaments.
Harrington on Hold'em is a NL Hold'em tournament book. I'm actually reading it for the first time right now. I am mainly a cash game player looking to start giving tournaments a shot.

Where is the best place to find the most skilled players at $50 games or so?
you really should be asking where the softest games are
What's the fun in that? Assume for the sake if discussion that I'm just as good as DN, or I think I could be with more experience. Unfortunately I'm also not wealthy enough to pay anything more than $100 for a game of poker. And even if I play a $100 game it's something I could only do once every few months which won't really tell me much about my game. How do I ever find out if I'm good? Apart from some kind rich soul staking me in a few tourneys I'll pretty much be stuck playing low buy-in games. The biggest one in the area where I don't have to get a hotel is not really great for my schedule (wed nights and you must play table games for awhile). In Limit games I hear it doesn't get harder, only more expensive. I wasn't sure if other casino tourneys were the same deal. Is a $500 buyin event at vegas with 1000 people harder to win than the WSOP that costs 10,000 but also has 1000 people?
