i don't like what i've read about that program, and the fact that i have heard zero about it previously does nothing for my confidence. there are a lot of so-called av programs out there that are worse than many of the viruses they pretend to be able to stop.1. antivirus:... free :: avast! or AVG, it is a bit of a tossup on preference. my personal choice is avast, i've never had it become a resouce hog.... paid :: norton internet security 2009. this recommendation will be contested hotly on here, but in the linked review they've improved it dramatically, to the point where it has won several round-up type compilations of similar programs. this was stunning-- STUNNING-- to me; for years i have fervently told people to get norton off their systems.2. spybot search&destroy. install it & do the immunization.3. firefox with adblock plus addon. lots of websites have ie-specific loopholes they use to get to your system.4. sandboxie. this one is fairly optional until i finish testing it myself. once you install it, the simplest way to use it is to click the icon on the desktop to run your web browser sandboxed. this transparently keeps all changes during the session in it's own little memory box, and tosses it all when you exit. you can also run other desktop programs by right-clicking it and selecting run sandboxed. and if you right click the tool icon for it you can access a version of your start menu to start anything in there sandboxed. there will be a naggy screen after the first month if you don't register. i haven't gotten there yet, but if i like it then as much as i do now, consider it registered.
Thanks Q!

1b will be hotly contested by me for one reason. Spam. I'm not talking about email spam, I'm talking about Norton SPAMMING my DESKTOP! I friggin' HATE popups and crap telling me to do this or that. I hate it so much I'm actually getting mad just thinking about having Norton installed on my system. I use Nod32, and I will never use another anti-virus program ever, unless they stop making such a good, non-intrusive product.

if you have experience with this latest incarnation of norton on someone's system, then i completely accede to that knowledge versus any review site. in fact, nod32 is one of the two i would normally suggest in these instances. i may have bought in to the review sites prematurely. <shrug> no harm in admitting i could be wrong.

I'm in a non-profit group that needs help on a website.Does anyone know a good way to capture email addresses. Maybe a pop-up or even just an enter & submit. How can I do this? Any help would be appreciated.

you want to capture them? or you want a form to let people submit them?

This would be perfect.Keep in mind that I've been elected to build this website and it will be my first time. I have no idea what I'm doing.

easiest: if the hosting package includes cpanel and/or fantastico, use the built in form generator.

My moniter doesn't go into sleep mode.I have the wonderful and new Vista, and have set the screen saver for 10 minutes with a really cool effect, and I have the power saver on max with a 10 minute window, and I leave my computer on and the moniter stays on all night and now I have ghost images of my dog Kobe on the screen and he is telling me to kill my neighbor, which is weird case my neighbor is a pump station.so I guess my question is how do you 'kill' a pump station?
Not sure about killing a pump station but I had the same trouble a month or so ago when I bought a new microsoft wireless mouse.I had to download a fix for it from the microsoft website now it works fine.Who would have thunk that a microsoft wireless mouse would have messed up the screensaver for microsoft Vista?

OK, Linux question. A colleague and I are working on some files we have stored under his home directory. We both need to access and be able to change everything within this folder. So I set group permissions to +rw since we are in the same group, and apply that to everything. No problem. However, anytime I do something that creates a new file, the default is no write permission for group. So if I create a new file in here, he can't change it. Is there a way I can change the default permissions that all new files I create will have? Otherwise I have to keep recursively cleaning the permissions in this directory.

Found the answer, which is the umask command.

Nothing tilts me more than gigantic sigs but I don't want to disable all pics since it's easier to recognize posters at a glance from the avatars. This has lead me to blocking tons of images both on my machine at home and my machine at work. Here's the rub. I went and blocked a huge sig image from Beans without thinking about it. He apparently uses the same host to post any and all of his images so now I'm totally fucked and can't see his funnies. So my question is how do I unblock my block.....er...block my unblocker.....er.................................unlock the block?

are you using firefox + adblock plus, or another picture blocker?
I'm using firefox for my browser and I have adblock + as per your recommendation as an addon. I don't know what blocks the pics though. I mouse over the pic, right click, and choose to block images from XXXXphotobucketwhateverxxxx. I looked through my tools and don't see where I can unblock a.........annnnnnd I just looked again under adblock where there are a lot of options that I don't understand the meaning. I'd be willing to unblock all images for fcp and deal with the ridiculously huge sig pics if I could find that option.

I didn't know this was an option.

okay.1. click the little drop arrow beside the ABP icon, select Preferences.2. open the search function, CTRL-F.3. type in icewater. this is in beans' path to his pictures, and is pretty unique in url's. (i21.photobucket.com/albums/b286/beans-n-icewater/)4. for each one you find, remove the checkmark, then click next.that should clear it up.

some clip that holds the northbridge heatsink on my girlfriend's computer came loose (which apparently happens fairly often--http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/18406-10-issues-quot-clip-quot-a810n), and i don't want her to blow the northbridge and thus the psu, etc.basically, i was wondering if there is some sort of compound that functions as both a thermal paste AND an adhesive, since i can't clip the thing back where it should go since i have no idea where the loose clip went to inside/outside the case, or how long it's been off, etc.
