I'd boot into safe mode, go to device manager, show hidden devices, uninstall everything under MONITORS
When I boot into safe mode, no monitors appear at all, even when showing hidden devices. When I'm not in safe mode, it shows three or four "Default Monitor" entries, a "Generic Television" and one or two "Plug and Play Monitor" entries.I tried uninstalling all of them, but as soon as I plug in the monitor again they all reappear. It seems like it recognises the monitor as being several different things. Could it be trying to force two or more profile settings onto one monitor or something like it?Why would it not be showing in safe mode, and do you have any more suggestions?Today the monitor won't work/switch on at all at full res, but still flashes repeatedly on low res settings.

thats def strange. you could try finding a monitor driver (inf file) for your specific monitor, that should help get rid of the default/generic/plug and play entries. not sure other wise...

Unfortunately I can't find anything. This default/generic/etc. thing might hold some clues though, so I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help.

Reinstalled Windows (well, installed it to a new partition to save me backing it all up, but same difference). No change. That rules out anything in the settings I'd say.To clarify, the other monitor (that works) has a max res of 1024x768. The monitor I'm having a problem with has a max res of 1680x1050, but it currently will only flash on and off at 800x600. At anything higher it either switches onto standby saying "no signal received", or it remains switched on, but totally blank. Essentially that proves that the graphics card will run 1024x768 easily on one monitor, but not on the other. It says the problem isn't with the hardware, basically. So, it's not the monitor, it's not the software and it's not the hardware.I am really lost now.

yeah me too, this is a strange problem for sure.if you have 2 monitors on this computer, i'm sure you've tried with just one, and with this monitor on the other dvi/vga port? have you tried a different connector (vga vs dvi)?

It's a laptop, and both external monitors I've tried use vga.I want to send the monitor back to ebuyer because I think a replacement would probably work, but other than one stuck pixel it works perfectly with other computers and with an Xbox360.Oh, here's an oddity:The monitor flickers on and off at 800x600 and it switches to standby saying no signal input at 1024x768, but it switches back on and flickers again at 1280x960. The other monitor works perfectly at any res (including the unsupported ones where the screen scrolls).I wish I could find just one consistency to cling to.

Anything productive you can add to that? Or am I just missing a joke?
I'm sure this is frustrating for you so it doesn't come across as funny. But honestly every Dell product either myself or friends of mine has gone busto.my Inspirton 5150 had heating issues and the graphics card whined at me more than a 2 year old toddler. The symptoms really seem like a graphic card driver issue tbh, even though I know you've tried that ally... did you try any drivers that aren't from ATI's site? There are like a billion out there.

I had a £1900 (~$3800) Alienware laptop a couple of years ago, but that had so many problems I fought for a refund and after that everyone pointed me to Dell. This one cost me £1200 (I decided I didn't actually need anything as powerful as the Alienware, so I cut back on some unnecessary features). I haven't had any problems until now.I guess with every company you'll get good and bad stories.

Yeah, I've tried three different driver sets. The Dell ATI ones, some other, non Dell ATI ones, and now some independent ones. I really think it's something with the graphics too, but I can't figure out what. What confuses me is that the graphics card can easily handle a second monitor, and it runs it without a problem. I can set it to 2560x1600 and it copes with it (ok, it scrolls across forever because it can only technically show up to 1024x768, but it still manages it). By comparison, the other monitor won't run smoothly on any setting. If it was something directly with the drivers or graphics I'd expect problems with both monitors.

Dear Ouch 8's,What are your thoughts on the Lenovo T61 and Dell m1330 for a med school student looking for fast, portable laptop with exceptional battery life?

Have you tried it with a linux live CD? that would really sort out if it's hardware or software.

apple ipod question:I'm trying to update my ipod, but now when i plug it in, it won't open up into itunes, like, the computer isn't reading it as an external drive. it IS connected to charge because the little lightning bolt in the battery area is there, but it just isn't connecting to my itunes (and it isn't showing up as another drive in "my computer") anybody know the deal?

Did you try rebooting your PC? Is the Ipod turned on?
yeah rebooted, tried it with the ipod turned on and off both, nothing.thing is, the other day, tuesday maybe, I updated my ipod because I had noticed some songs were missing. I connected it, itunes recognized it, and I synced it, but it was much, much quicker than normal which I thought was weird. then when I went to eject it, the option for safely removing the hardware wasn't in my taskbar (or whatever the lower right of my screen is called), so I had to eject it with itunes. after checking my ipod later in the day, I noticed the songs I had put in there didn't show up on my ipod, so it hadn't synced. now itunes won't even recognize it, but like I said, its still connected because its charging.I did have to do an itunes update for "safari" recently, but I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with it, would it?

Dear Ouch 8's,What are your thoughts on the Lenovo T61 and Dell m1330 for a med school student looking for fast, portable laptop with exceptional battery life?
the dell looks good but the screen would be too small for my liking. portable tho. the t61s have some great deals but are somewhat underspecc'd - need more RAM, for example. i've always liked the lenovo/ibm laptops, though - they're no-nonsense business machines, but very well built.

linux livecd multimonitor support is somewhat limited still, isn't it (in ubuntu, anyways)? i know that i've always had problems, although i haven't tried in a while.

Good idea.Will try that.
Sigh. I forgot how irritating linux is. Once it's running it's great, but until then it's just so much hassle. Also, it's been over 12 months since I last used ubuntu so I am pretty clueless.Trying to figure out how to install the second monitor. It's asking for drivers. Of which there aren't any.

Is 2GB ram (1 DIMM) enough to run Vista Ultimate smoothly? I have been reading a lot about this online and it seems like most people think that 2GB is adequate, 1GB makes it run too slow, and 4GB did not result in a significant improvement in performace because something about Vista's only using up to 3GB max (?).Right now I can get a pretty solid deal on a T61s, the only thing slowing me down is the 2GB ram, and upgrading to 3GB (2 DIMM) or 4GB (2 DIMM) is expensive.

2gb is adequate, but 3gb is preferred. It's not exactly vista that cannot use more than 3gb, it's a 32bit machine. it's usually a lot cheaper to buy the laptop with the minimal amount of RAM available then to upgrade it from a 3rd party (RAM is not hard to install).
