so my laptop has this little button that you push when you want to turn on the device to accept wireless internet. in the past, by right clicking the network thing and clicking "repair" i could get it on or i could push the button on the case of the laptop. anyway, it stopped turning on and i can no longer get wireless internet on my laptop.sorry, i suck at explaining things.any thoughts?

First off, I'm using Vista, so I apologize to everyone that I offend in advance.Last night I shut down my laptop, and must have closed it before it finished shutting down... when I went to turn it on today, it was still frozen on the shutdown screen. So I turned it off by holding the power button... when I turned it back on, it established new settings and all that shit. So now, everything is seemingly wiped back to initial state, as far as the OS is concerned... but all of my programs are still here, and all of my documents and stuff are still here (although I have to go a different route to get to them.) I got a popup error telling me that it failed to load my profile correctly, and I should contact my administrator. Guess what? That's me! How do I get it back? This initial Vista setup is reminding me that I have Vista, when I had it looking perfectly like XP.

nope
my 17" samsung could run 1600x1200 despite not officially supporting larger than 1280x1024 or whatever. I used nvidia's config app to do it. It did not look good. are there no 19" monitors that can support 1600x1200?

i'd google the exact phrase of the error message and see what comes up. sounds like your profile got corrupted.

i don't see how that can work - it's not like normal interpolation (down), there just aren't the pixels there... was this in windows or linux? which driver and monitor? weird.

After giving up and using the newly created profile, I did a last-ditch restart... and my original profile returned. I'm glad I know the exact steps to fix it if it happens again, ha.

this was years ago, but it was windows and the default nvidia driver, with a samsung 17". I'll play around with it some more sometime to see if I can pull it off again. It could very well be that my video card couldn't officially support the resolution.

Ok. Since it's only my boss and I at our office, I tend to wear many hats...one of them being IT guy. Now I am far from an expert, but know just enough to get into trouble and have the sense to google or microsoft for troubleshooting, but I need a little more help on this one.My boss's wife's computer is running very, very slow. She has a Dell 2400. The Harddrive is about 80 gig w/ some 59 gig open.I've run McAfee (free w/ comcast) to check for any virus', I've run spybot and Ad-Aware for those other pesky critters, but to no avail. Opening the internet is like watching paint dry, then when you close it, it paints down the screen...very slowly.I've checked the start-up programs and ran them through some websit letting me know if they're really needed or not and I was able to elimnate a few, but there still seems to an awful lot in there. It's running XP and I started defrag before I left, figuring it may take all night to run.She only has 256 of memory. My question is could the low memory be the only problem causing the drag or should I be looking for mulitple problems. It's no problem buying/installing the memory, but I'd hate to do that to find out that really didn't speed it up.Any suggestions?

probably multiple problems. xp def likes more than 256mb of ram, but i'm going to assume that at one point it ran faster?trying disabling all the startup programs. there's probably lots that are 'legit' but unnecessary. you can always reinstate them.a degrag could def help, esp with such little ram.eventually, any windows install will build up enough detrius in the registry and old unused drivers in the system dirs and such that a backup/format/reinstall will be beneficial. depending on past use, that could be every year to every few years.

Thank you for the response. Is the backup/format/reinstall a difficult process? I know nothing about backing up, unless it's burning some data to a disk. And does this mean wiping the harddrive clean, formatting it and re-loading xp, drivers, programs, etc from scratch?

it's not particularly difficult but it's definately a pain in the arse. and yes, that's what it means.before doing it, i recomend going through the computer, noting all the programs you use, and making sure you have the instalation discs/can download it again. burn all files, bookmarks/favourites, emails to a cd(s). make note of any passwords that are filled-in automatically by the computer (email, websites, etc) and have them ready before you go ahead. and dedicate several hours to a full day to do it, depending on the speed of the computer and you.

I am happy to report that I will not have to go through this grooling process. Thank God. I've already had to do it on my computer, I didn't really want to do it on someone elses.I think the defrag helped and also i did the REGCLEAN utility from Microsoft, took out a few more start-up programs and the system seems to be running a lot better... No more painting on/off screens.I've gone ahead and ordered her 1 GB of RAM, which should also help nicely as she has a lot of photo crap on her cpu.We get free McAfee with Comcast, but she is a big AOL user and I found a lot of their crap running on her computer (GONE).Anyways, thanks for your assistance and hopefully I score a few points with my boss by making his wife a happier pc user (because if my computer were as slow as this was, it would be at the bottom of my pool).

I wish I had a poolHey ouch, I finally have a problem that is related to vista (although it is NOT vista's fault, its aol's, so THERE). I tried to download aim 5.9 the other day without thinking about compatibility, and of course it isn't compatible with vista, which makes sense. but when I tried to uninstall it, it just locks up in the uninstall, presumable due to the incompatibility. I then tried to delete it from my program files manually, but it said I didn't have permission. I then went to the properties of the aim folder, tried to change my permissions to everything allowed or whatever, but it still wouldn't let me, and would switch back to the original settings after I closed it. any ideas? its not really a big deal, I just like to keep my computer clean.

Here's the AIM client I use. It works with msn and a bunch of others, too:http://pidgin.im/I briefly looked through google and wasn't finding an answer. As long as that trash isn't actually running, I don't see a problem with letting it be. 6.5 supposedly works with vista, but I'd stay away. Most of the results I got from message boards basically said "this shit is terrible and I don't know why you'd ever use it."

Dear OuchWhen I play DVDs on VLC Media Player the video and audio skips. I looked at the message log and then googled some of the errors. The consensus seems to be that I need to update my audio and video drivers. I don't know how to do that. I googled it and that didn't help. I looked in my system properties and it said all my audio stuff is up to date. Am I supposed to buy something in a shop or do I download it from the internet? I don't even know what these drivers are so that makes it especially hard to find them. I am on Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 630m, that's my system. Love LG

yeah, user permissions are one of the major reasons why vista has so many problems. aim in general can completely kill a vista computer apparently making it impossible to use. sounds like you're doing the right things...

go to dell, enter your service tag id on the support page (look on a sticker underneath), and grab all the relevant drivers for the video/audio from there.

Dear Ouch 8-s,How would you assess the risk of a trojan among the various helpful closed-source poker software? It seems like someone unscrupulous could make a lot of money adding a keylogger to something like GameTime+ or Pokerstove.

I know pokerstove's author. He's working on an absurdly cool all-encompassing poker suite for some passive income, so where's the incentive to put something nasty in his loss-leader?this isn't to say everything is safe, obviously...

User permissions are the worst, I couldn't get half the things I wanted to run to run untill I turned user permissions off. What the fck is wrong with Microsoft, do they even beta test?

That was probably a bad example, since Prock is a little more visible than most.

What do you suppose this haze is? I thought maybe it was a color-space conversion issue, so I dorked around with the color depth to no avail. This is the Nvidia binary driver, but I get the same thing with the generic one. Any other ideas?haze.jpg
