Pretty Incredible Live Poker Story

Recommended Posts

I've been around this place for a long time, I rarely start threads, and only post once in a blue moon. I feel like sharing this story. I got to play in the Harrah's St. Louis monthly tournament of champions as a winner of a tourney in November. It's a 10k plus free roll, with a huge first prize of 10k, 1576 for second and on down. 120 in, final 10 got paid. I finished 2nd. (that should about cover the brags) Final hand blinds are 4-8k, I make it 20 with Q-Jo, winner makes it 39, I go all in for my last 65, he thinks forever and calls me and tables J-10. Flop K-Q-J, turn 4, river 9. AAAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH. (that will cover the BB's).I promise the story gets interesting. I shake the guy's hand, get my 1576, leave a tip, notwithstanding the bloody freaking 9, get up to leave and the winner says to me, "wait, I got something for you." I couldn't figure out what the hell the guy wanted, but I decided to indulge him. Well, he gets his 10k, minus taxes taken out (he got 7100) and proceeds to hand me 1000 bucks. I was STUNNED. And for you naysayers, I couldn't make this up if I tried. I absolutely couldn't believe this total stranger was giving me 1000 bucks. I asked him why, are you sure, positive, etc., and he told me he felt bad about the last hand. I thanked him approximately 17 million times and went home.I've had several hours to process this, and the main question I keep asking myself regards the situation being reversed. While I might offer the guy a beer (you actually have to buy them on Missouri casinos, really) there is no way on the face of the earth that I am handing him 1000 bucks. I'm still fairly speechless about the whole deal. Anybody else ever have anything like this happen?

That’s a cool story. Rather magnanimous of the gentleman. People are odd creatures they do funny things for funny reasons. I’m like you, I don’t think I would have giving someone a grand simply because I felt bad for way the hand turned out. What do you plan on doing with the 1k? 1. You could buy $500 worth sleeping bags for local homeless shelter and pocket the rest. 2. Or You could buy $1000 worth of toys for underprivileged kids toys for Christmas. 3. Or you could drop the whole wad on hookers and blow. Whatever you decide, you can't go wrong. Merry Holidays!Joe

I know this is off topic, but did you consider making a deal? Where the second place prize is like 1/7 the first place prize id probably deal especially when the stack sizes seem so low.Besides that I couldnt imagine giving away a grand like that and think all the suggestions for the money are good.

Sweet !Paying it forward would be awesome and doesn't have to involve passing on the cash...........do something nice for someone to honor this gift, volunteer, give blood, offer to pick up groceries for an elderly neighbor who can't drive.

I think he felt guilty for knowing J-10 was that day's lucky hand.Congrats on it all. To me, Barry Greensteining it is my ultimate goal for playing tournament poker, so please share if you decide to do some random acts of kindness with the bonus mobneys. But no worries if you don't or can't--we're all in different places in our poker "careers" and either through your play or your character, you earned that extra grand as much as you did the actual cash. Enjoy!

First, thanks to everyone for all the cool replies. As for passing the money on and paying it forward, I do plenty of charitable stuff each year. My mom is the local chapter president of the Susan B. Koman foundation (Breast Cancer), and I donate plenty of time and money. To be brutally honest, I will probably spend most of the money on my wife and 6 yr old daughter. As to the quote above, we briefly discussed a deal. However, the gaming rules in Missouri are absolutely insane. You can cut a deal, but the house can't know about it because it's not allowed under MO gaming laws. The real problem in cutting a deal in this tourney is that no matter who ends up with what amount of cash, somebody has to be declared the winner and that same person ends up with a receipt/tax bill for a 10k win. It makes cutting a deal almost impossible. We discussed it but couldnt come up with a solution to that issue. I suspect that maybe that was also part of him giving me the 1k when we finished up.Finally, to the poster who asked about the prize structure being so ridiculous, I frankly have no idea why Harrah's chooses to do that. This is the only tourney I have ever participated in where the jump is so obnoxious from second to first. Frankly, I wish they would change it, and I'm guessing most of the participants would agree.

Selfish prick.
I frankly have no idea why Harrah's chooses to do that.
Well, I can think of two reasons...assuming they have a set budget for the total prize pool.1. $10,000 Grand Prize just sounds better than something like $7,450 Grand Prize.2. Maybe there's a reason why they would want the winner to have to report the winnings to the IRS. I have no idea why, but it's possible that's why they would choose that exact prize.

I don't think I would have taken the money. Now, since you did, do some good deed with it.
You would have not taken the money!!?? I don't know how I could turn it down. Congrats on being so fiscaly stable that you can let a free 1K just walk by.
