The skill is putting yourself in the position to be lucky.
Explain. How does one put themself in a position to be lucky?
by accumulating a huge stack which allows you to race small stacks. By understanding pot odds, and getting your money in when you have proper odds to chase what looks like a slim draw. By forcing other players to make decisions instead of reacting to them. By giving the appearance of reckless play when in fact all your decisions are calculated. When you realize the truism of the statement, you will instantly become a better poker player.

I think you can't call poker players who have multiple successes flukes. Huck Seed, Gus Hansen, and now Tuan Le have proved they are no one-hit wonders. Anyone who wins a major tournament where they put someone all-in and they have the worst of it. Greg Raymer had some small poker acccomplishments at Foxwoods before the WSOP and the way he continues to do well in some big tournaments makes me believe he is the real deal. Moneymaker has a second on the WPT and not that much success on a limited schedule. But I believe he has good instincts and is a good poker. Varkoyani I always felt was lucky. I do not think he is good poker player, but I don't think he is a bad poker player. At the final table he was not passive, which is the worst quality a poker player can have, and took advantage of the bad play of others, particularly John Shipley, and won. He did make some questionable calls (cue Phil Hellmuth: "Q ****ing 10), and he has no other poker accomplishments, I would call Varkoyani an OK player who got lucky.

This is pure rhetoric. None of this leads to putting yourself in the position to be lucky. A more accurate statement would be "accumulate a lot of chips and you can gamble more."

obviously its pure rhetoric. thats the point. the whole concept of luck is rhetoric. One of the great talents of world class poker players is that they make it seem as though they are getting lucky. over and over again. In reality, there is no luck. there is variance, but it all converges upon the mean. Why do you think guys like Harrington cant win a tournament anymore? because people know he is tight, and wont give him action. But, take a guy like tuan le. every joe shmoe and his uncle is calling this guy a lucky POS. This guy will get action all night long because no one can get past the fact that he doesnt stick to top ten hands. They cant wrap their minds around the fact that he is a skilled player. It flies in the face of everything they've read, everything thats been ingrained into their minds, so they dismiss it.

No are they Worl d Class Players like Ivey, Hellmuth, DN, Ledered, Gus, Huck, Juanda etc.? No. That is simply it they are good and not great and require luck to do well while other great players can never or rarely behind in big pots.
