Multi Tabling Vs. Single Table....more Profit But Less Learning?

Recommended Posts

just wondering what you guys thought about this. Played five .05 .10 tables at a time this weekend and i saw my $/hour really sky rocket. Plus i am trying to build a bankroll and move up limits so it was nice to see my bankroll grow so quickly. The only thing is i played more like a robot because i could really get no reads while playing that many tables. Because of this i found myself paying people off where i probably would have made a fold if i was only playing one table. My question is am i cheating my self out of some learning? How did yall build your bankrolls and become succesful at the higher limits? What should my strategy be?

I build my bankroll from just being rich.but seriously, I have no idea...I apparently SUCK at poker so my advice would be to do the opposite of what I say 100% of the timesorry, I had a bad day online...carry on.

I only play 3 tables maximum. And that depends on the amount of action each table has. I usually only play one. I like to get good reads on people and play them. Sometimes I will play 2 if I'm in a tournament or something and I start getting bored waiting for all these people to make a decision preflop or whatever. I would never be able to handle playing 5 tables at a time. It would drive me crazy and I wouldn't be able to concentrate. To all you guys who can play multi-tables and prosper, I somewhat envy you. I don't know how you all do it.I would much rather get good reads and crush the whole table, JMO.I don't see how guys like Elky and Hevad Khan play 10+ tables at a time. The way Pokerstars alerts you to make a move, I don't think you'd be able to really do anything. You'd get half of a second to look at your hand and click "fold", "call", or "raise". I can't see that being too profitable, money wise or learning.

NL is so boring. I'd kill myself playing less than 4 tables. If I had a better setup I could play 10 full rings and not break a sweat.
You're such a stud.

to each his owni like seeing average pots of 30BBs and the occassional 200-300 BB pot. i can't see how that is boring. limit poker makes me wanna hang myself. pots are just too small and I don't have the patience.i play 7 NL FR tables and it's pretty fast almost too fast. just added the seventh but my win rate is better at 6. OP if you have 20 buyins i would definitely multitable.

It's always exciting in limit to see what retarded two pair is going to beat me on the river. :club:

Yeah, I was gonna say, did Zach really just imply that LIMIT HOLDEM is more exciting than anything?

I find LHE far less boring for a few reasons.More raising, reraising, more showdowns, more drawing, more action...
I used to play limit and I can kind of see where you are coming from in that there are a lot more hands with interesting dynamics in them when you are playing limit, especially SH. Also, there are periods in no limit that can just suck and be ridiculously boring. Having said that, there is nothing like the feeling of stacking AA with 222 for 100 BB IMO, which is something you can't do in limit. Also, you need to factor into the equation that no man has ever played LHE for more than 2 years without being declared mentally insane and institutionalised for the remainder of his adult life.

the more I read about LHE and NLHE, I'm starting to lean towards LHE...

Trying to get reads of people at micro stakes and 'learning' the game is futile. At a higher level, yes, watch the game and learn, but at these stakes play as many tables as you can and get your profit up. Save the learning for higher levels.A lot of the time aswell. if you're just playing one table you get impatienece and try and play to fancy with your 'reads' on other players and lose money.

so basically you're saying that I won't be able to learn at micro limits but I should use it to get my bankroll up?what if my bankroll is already in a good place and I can afford to play higher limits (say 1/2). What's the recommendation here?

I think that you can learn at Micro limits, but you'll have to read on the side and do other things becuase if you learn from what some of the players are doing, you're gonna pick up A LOT of bad habits.Once you're ready to move up to a game, try playing 2 tables at once and really focus on them. Different thigns work for different people. When I play HU, I generally am only playing one table right now becuase there are so many more decisions and I haven't really gotten into a groove enough to do it 2 or 3 handed. When I'm playing 6 max on the other hand, I feel like 3 tables is often kind of slow paced becuase it doesn't take as much focus. As for Zach's LHE argument. Yeah, there's more betting and raising and showdowns and stuff, but that's beucase the bets are always so small that you have to put in a lot of bets to get to the same point that a NLHE player gets to with ONE bet. Honestly, my only knock on LHE is that I hate the lack of creativity. It's really hard to put together an elaborate bluff when the only decision people ever face is "do I wanna pay this off at 14-1?" I know LHE players argue bluffing is harder in their game (true) and therefore more fun (untrue), but I Just don't buy it. NLHE for me pelase and thank you.

.05/.10 limits you can just play your cards and profit because the average player is so stupid. So this is a good limit to be multitabling at.That being said, I hate multitabling. I'm more profitable myself sitting at a single table and concentrating, especially when I find a table that's juiced. I guess it all depends on how subject to tilt you are. Going on tilt while having 5 tables open is super -EV

I will take your word that you're more profitable at one table than X tables, but I think that's becuase you don't know how to properly multitable. If you don't care to, that's one thing. It's a pretty standard situation that when you multitable, your profit per table drops (maybe significantly) but you overall hourly profit rises becuase you are getting more hands in. I just don't know how you are more profitable at one table than at 2 or 3 or 4.

Tilt control :)I've multitabled for years. It does great 19 out of 20 sessions... but that 20th session...

It's tough to bluff small stakes LHE just like it is at small stakes NL.You're naive if you think you can't run elaborate bluffs at MSLHE or higher.3-bet bluffing a guy, getting him to fold for 10-1 is fantastic.
