brvheart 1,751
Reports are starting to trickle down that my favorite singer of all time, Tom Petty, is close to death. I will not be able to handle life this week.
FCP Bob 1,311
Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip. The Hip are the most Canadian band ever. I spent Dec 31st 1999 with The Hip at the ACC. http://www.ctvnews.c...at-53-1.3637357
FCP Bob 1,311
Radio stations were playing nothing but Tragically Hip yesterday and Prime Minister Trudeau was in tears talking about him since they were close friends. I don't think there is a parallel in other countries that that can make those outside Canada understand our connection to Downie and The Hip. From the New York Times https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/18/arts/music/gord-downie-tragically-hip-dead-final-album.html The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close. The Tragically Hip’s music “helped us understand each other, while capturing the complexity and vastness of the place we call home,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our identity and culture are richer because of his music, which was always raw and honest — like Gord himself.”
brvheart 1,751
I've never heard of them, and anyone who gets big in the US automatically is known worldwide, so I would tend to agree with you that there probably isn't a parallel, unless you go to state level acts like Iowa and The Nadas, or something similar. You seemed to be moved by the death of Tom Petty, magnify that across the entire country and ramp up the intensity of those feelings by a lot and you still will be short to how Canada feels about Gord Downie. This was during tonight's Raptor's game.
