Is This Angle Shooting?

Recommended Posts

Home game SnG. I'm in a pot w/ one player on my right. Flop hits, he checks, I bet, he calls. No problem there. Here's where it gets interesting.Turn comes. He is thinking for a short time and counting chips. Before he acts, I ask out loud "How many chips do you have over there?"apparently there was some controversy whether I was acting out of turn or not by asking that question. I had a real good feeling that I could get him to fold to any bet if I asked the question at that point. He ended up checking, then I made a bet and he folded the hand (like I hoped for). Was I out of line?P

I don't think so.What you should try though, next time someone ask you how many chips you got...before he finishes his sentence say, "hm? I call (say it fast)...wait, what was the question?".

You were not angle shooting at all. Did anyone else that was their think you were?
Not really. I was just wondering if I was 'the jerk' in that situation. The guy is my best friend. He gets a little tentative sometimes because he doesn't always do so well in the "win money at poker" column and sometimes feels like his losses are compounded by people pulling fast ones over on him. (not true, I would never cheat my friends, or anyone, at poker) I think he was upset because he was gonna lose the hand and wanted some other excuse than his poor play to blame in that situation. We determined at the time that there was no 'infraction', and I made a mental note not to hurt his fragile feelings anytime soon. Maybe next time I can get him to bluff off his stack ;-)

yeah asking for someone's chip count isnt acting out of turn. it helps to know before it is your turn to act so when it does get to you, you will know what to bet already. another reason it isnt acting out of turn is because you didnt say a bet out of turn you were simply just asking a question about the hand. idk what other people in casinos would think but like a lot of people here i dont feel you acted out of turn. how did you do that night? and how did your friend do?

I wouldn't call it angle shooting but certainly you asked the question at that point with the intent of influencing the action. Seems fine within the rules but there are some people who are offended when others use such tactics. Of course there are people who are offended by people who bluff or check/raise.

Not an actual angle shot, but I think what you did was wrong for one reason. The player is thinking about the hand and you interrupted his thought process with a question that could wait. I doubt you would like it if you were considering your play on a key hand and someone bothered you.

LOL.... interupted his thought process!?!?! WTF? If it was a player asking questions that was NOT in the hand I could see your point. But two people competing in a hand....everything goes!!!

Also, in your own thought process, you might want to know how many chips your opponent is holding to explain his future actions. But yeah, if someone asked me a question while I was in my thinking process, I would punch him.

In a cardroom, you don't have to answer this question. If the talk/banter interrupted your thought process, you just keep on thinking and ignore his question. You don't have to say anything, the dealer will count the chips for you (he may ask you to move them forward tho).
