I love the instant and complete turnaround in this thread from "yeah that was really nice" to "yeah you got scammed" as soon as it was moved from general to off topic. priceless.

As expected.General is the shiny, touristy part of FCP, with lots of photo ops and cheap souvenirs. OT is the seedy part of town, with strip clubs and porn shops and lots of sleazy characters.

I guess the weird part is this....and I can't really explain it.I KNOW I was likely getting a grift.....yet I gave and did anyway. There was something really odd about that reaction. Because I actually went into the gas station and had time to think things over, thought this was a grift, yet still decided to give, which really ****ed with my logical ******* side of me.All I could do was tell her, and sincerely, that I thought she did this sort of thing for money, but I'm giving it to her anyway, and that she should get help if that's true. Yeah, my words were worth next to nothing, but I said it because it made me feel better, and if there was a 1% chance that me calling her out as a con and STILL giving her money would have some sort of impact on her, for her daughters sake, well then it was worth saying. If her story was true, she wouldn't be offended at the insinuation because she'd know that there are people out there who do it.I have a better solution to handle it if it happens again, which will be to a) buy a gas card and B) get a nearby shelter's info and ask them to follow me down, c) call the police so she can report what her husband did, etc. whatever the story is.I figure all of this will give me the information I need to make the best decision of the legitimacy of any claims made. Thanks for the input guys, you made me LOL several times while allowing me to bury this issue completely and move on. Even in the tiniest of lights, I can look at it like I may have prevented someone from getting robbed for that money, or someone who needed that money much more than I did getting grifted. I feel good about it. If it was, she'll have to answer for that someday.

The way the Gaslamp district in San Diego handled this problem is they had all the merchants put up signs that say if you want to give to the panhandler's, get them these food tokens. The food tokens were good at the restaurants there to be applied to a meal. They warned to never give cash, just the food tokens. Amazingly, there was very little begging there. A motivated person could bring the same program to Arizona.....
I live in San Diego, but have never seen the tokens or anyone actually go through the trouble of purchasing them. It's still bums and panhandlers begging for money and people giving them their spare change and bills. Me included. How can you not give money to guys like this? (taken in PB): jamesandbum.jpgObey,It's a rare thing nowadays when people follow their heartfelt convictions (whether right or wrong), and thats to be applauded even though I'm sure you're not looking for that.

Wow, it's great you are a nice guy, but...wow. 99% sure it was a scam. You should try coming to Chicago sometime - there are beggars everywhere - literally one on every corner in the downtown area and at least one in front of every starbucks. Most have some story or another. My favorite was a lady who came up to me in a parking lot. Her: "I'm bleeding everywhere and I can't get it to stop. Can I get in your car and have you drive me to the hospital?"Me: "No."Her (rather cheerfully): "That's ok. Can I have $50 for a cab?"LOL

Really, when I was in Chi Town in 02 I did not see that many bums, in fact I was amazed at how clean the city was, easily the cleanet major city I have ever been in. In fact all the people there were raving about how great the mayor was at cleaning up the city.
I've never even heard of the word grift until today.
Seriously you guys are all making me feel really old, who has not heard of grifting??? It like the 3rd oldest profession.

His name is either Lumberg, Bob or Bob
Looks like you've been missing a lot of work lately. I wouldn't say I've been "missing" it, Bob.
