With all the crap that has gone on in the last couple years with hackers, etc., just want to know what the recommendations are for the security I need to add to my system. qyayqi 11
most virii are designed to hit windows machines, lots of holes for them to exploit. a router has a built-in firewall to secure your lan & a hardware firewall is generally better than a software one.most people prefer the convenience of windows. install antivirus on it, avast! being a solid free one. install spybot search&destroy & use the immunize feature. don't click random links that people send to you, do a mouse-over to be sure it points where you think it points before clicking.and yes, use a router between your isp's box & your lan.i run avast! intermittently, based on whether i am downloading/installing anything. i don't let it use up resources when i am simply using existing software. Sheiky 0
Make sure you accept any live updates from windows or whatever security system you get put in, never download anything dodgy, and don't browse the internet before getting some security installed (they did a test on this on a British TV show, a new laptop on the internet for ten minutes got hit by 47 spyware programs).Get Search and Destroy, best program ever.Oh and use Mozzila
RDog 0
Get Search and Destroy, best program ever.Spybot right? My problem is I forget to run it so I end up only running it like once every couple weeks. So basically an anti-virus like Norton and then Spybot and that is it?

20TN40 0
Norton will suck up sooo much resources that your computer will run like molasses. Program Spybot to run at scheduled intervals...like while you're sleeping, at work, etc.

My problem is I forget to run it so I end up only running it like once every couple weeks. So basically an anti-virus like Norton and then Spybot and that is it?If you come across something that you KNOW is malicious, that Spybot can't remove, use a little program called HijackThis. Read up on this before using it. Run Spybot and HijackThis in Windows' safe-mode.

Norton is a hog as mentioned but if you are playing for any serious money on line then it is well worth the little extra time at startup and while loading programs (that's where it slows things down). I also have a router and encrypted wireless (if you are getting a router make sure you encrypt). Other than that be carefull downloading. I am specialy carefull downloading free poker related stuff (don't unless you trust the source, this has been a spource for many poker related hacks as the malware is very specialized and does not get picked up on scans by most security software). You may also want to get a good keylogger detector. I don't have a reccomendation as I am looking for a good one myself.

LOLhaven't used kaspersky, i can't comment on it.you don't remove anything, you just install firefox & use it (and get the addons noted). there are a few sites that have problems with firefox, and for those you fire up internet explorer.
