Has he overbet like this previously? Problem is that it could easily be a big pair or quads. Also, why the flop check?
I have never seen him make an overbet of this proportion before. He was playing pretty tight 6 handed, then became significantly more aggressive when we started playing HU (obv).I'm not sure how much I like my check on the flop. I was confident I had the best hand at that point and I had position, so my line of thinking was I'll let him take a stab at it on the turn. His check on the turn was a little suspicious, so I threw a feeler bet out there to see where I was. After he raised me there and massively overbet the riv, I was pretty sure he was putting me on a big hand (JJ, maybe even KK) and thought I would call him down, thinking that he was bluffing his ass off.I gave him credit for either AA or quads and made the (easy?) fold.ISAP?

Omg this is HU? Why in gods name didn't you bet the flop :club:?
See post above. That really isn't the focus of the hand though. Given how the hand played out, I doubt a bet on the flop would have changed much; probably would have only cost me more $$

I don't play much (any) HU really, so I could be way off here. I'll tell Jordan to take a look at this and see what he thinks.First off, we raise pf and he flat calls. So immediately I don't think he has any pp larger than us.I bet flop always here, he calls with SUCH a wide range that we beat.Turn is fine I think.River I'd probably just call, although I'm tempted to shove if I think he'd call for a split. (but shoving would be bad, so dont shove. Just saying, its tempting :) ) But I snap call that river bet. I just can't give him credit for a pp bigger than us, I think he'd 3bet pf with 77 also, so its either a Q that he massively slowplayed, or he's just trying to make a bad bluff here. Like I said, I don't play a lot of HU, but I snap call here.Mark

agree, on that board, if you aren't playing it, you should call.

It's not terrible reasoning, but I don't think it's appropriate for this hand. If you've got JJ or better, there's a little more of an argument. With 88, there's a plethora of cards we don't want to see on the turn A/K/J/T/9 (20 cards).

This is a very good point, thanks cobalt. Now, let's say the hand plays out in a similar fashion if I make this bet on the flop (I bet flop, he calls, then c/r me on the turn and overbets the riv). Is the general consensus here still a call? It just felt to me that he was looking for a call on the end.

It's pretty hard to give him credit for a big pair here, possibly trying to trap with AA but even that is a stretch. So really for me it comes down to whether or not I think he'd raise there with quads on the turn? It's just so hard to fold here when the board has a full house and you can beat it.

I might not be able to resist that temptation. :D

I find people attempting to "trap" HU with big pairs all of the time. Granted, I don't play nearly as much HU cash as a bunch of our friends around here. Additionally, there are plenty of players that wouldn't 3-bet 99/TT/JJ here pre-flop.

Bet that flop and get your info there. This is hard to not call. This is hard to call. In live play, I will revert to my read. Online ... hell, I dunno. You're being asked to dump a lot of money into a smallish existing pot ... I dump it and forget about it.
