Where Is The Breaking Point?

Recommended Posts

I make this post not to complain about all the bad players or express my anger of all the bad beats I've run into, we all know we have all experienced it all. What I am wondering is at what stakes have other online players experienced observing a drastic difference or "threshold" from what the book would consider inexperienced play to informed or more advanced play. A little background info, I have been playing poker for 3-4 years starting with home games, then smaller stakes live casino games, and with my current residency I am no only able to play online. I would consider myself to be fairly well educated in this game, (Can compute odds, understand starting hand strengths, pot odds, bet sizing, bet pattern observations, ect. (Granted I always need to improve all aspects of my game to continue to advance)) but I simply do not have lots of extra money to dump into a starting bankroll, I have been attempting to grind out the $2-5 SnGs and other tournaments but have been failing to build up enough to move onto much higher stakes. I suppose my ultimate question is for those of you who have previously built a large bankroll off of a smaller amount; what games did you find where the best to do it in and when did you witness a threshold where most of the players are fairly advanced. Sorry if this got a little lengthy and thanks for any response.

There is no magical cutoff; they just get gradually tougher as you move up. Start at the bottom and work your way up until you start losing, the go back to the previous level.

I think building up a bankroll from a small starting amount is a lot easier online because of the game choices, especialy at stars.I would reallly reccomend trying to get internet access and tear up the micro limit tables for a while.

grinding 2 and 5 sngs online is tough cuz the rake hurts.i'd save up a grand that you can depo, and depo that and start playing higher limits relative to your roll.like 50nl.- Jordan

Jordan brings up a point I have seriously considered, depositing enough money where I do not need to play at the very bottom of the micro levels. I doubt I would deposit a grand, but what do others think about starting at say $300. Would playing .5/1 NL be a mistake on this roll? (NVM major mistake) What do you recommend for bankroll size compared to stakes.

If you want to play .5/1nl I'd at least need a bankroll of 1,000 to get started. I think with a 300 roll I'd play .10/.25nl at the most.

Deposit $300, play stars 45-man either $6.50 or $12 depending on how prepared you are to lose the $300. Remember that strict BR requirements only apply if you absolutely don't ever want to have to deposit again. So not so relevant when you are first starting out IMO. ALthough obv you want to avoid continually re-depositing.I think $12 45-man SNGs are OK with $300 if you are happy to gamble it up a little bit.
