fighter 4
ESPN stands for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. Poker falls into the entertainment category.See this falls down when you realise that chess has been on ESPN. (a joke about chess not being entertaining, probably too abstract) It is probably considered a game more then a sport AINECA few days ago (editors note: 5 years ago) the Olympic Programme Commission released its recommendations for the 2008 Beijing Olympiad. Included on the list of sports that won't be there are chess, bridge, wushu, and tanks vs. students. Not only were chess and bridge denied, but the Commission proposes adding language to the official program that will completely rule out "mind sports":"While there is no global definition of what constitutes a sport, and what the difference between a sport and a game is, the most commonly accepted element of a sport is physical exertion in the conduct of competition. In this regard, 'mind sports' could be considered as sports where the physical elements are not necessarily performed by the player in the conduct of the competition. The Commission therefore makes the following recommendation in relation to 'mind sports' and the Olympic Programme: 1) that 'mind sports' be defined as being sports where the physical elements are not necessarily performed by the player in the conduct of the competition. 2) that 'mind sports' should not be eligible for admission to the Olympic Programme 3) the recommended interpretation be incorporated in the text of Rule 52 of the Olympic Charter" http://www.chessbase.com/columns/column.asp?pid=

BigDMcGee 3,353
Hey Guys,Come vote for Daniel, even though A)You Have no idea how much power he has in the poker world, but if you were to bet, you'd bet that guys like Doyle Brunson have infinitively more power B ) Poker isn't a sport, it's a game C) I am only telling you to do this so Daniel can get free publicity and it will increase the value of Brand Negreanu. D) Polls like this are meaningless (other than the free publicity) Because random people who have no idea how much power someone has within their industry get to vote on it. .http://www.businessweek.com/table/07/power100nominations.htm FYP
FCP Bob 1,320
FYPYou actually couldn't be further from the truth.Gov posted this on his own without any prodding from anybody else, he's at heart a "fan" of Daniel and of poker.Actually without question Daniel is one of the most influencial players if not the most in the game today and that includes Doyle. Here's a link to Pokerbiz and their Power 25 in the Poker Business. Daniel is number 7 and the number 1 listed player.http://www.thepokerbiz.com/about-tpb-power-25/1. World Series of Poker 2. World Poker Tour 3. PokerStars.com 4. ESPN 5. PokerRoyalty 6. vbnautilus 48
I guess it brings up the point does a Sport have to be an athletic contest or can it be a contest of the mind ? Personally I like to use the term sport only for athletics. But there is some basis for using it more broadly. The word comes from the Old French desport meaning "pastime, recreation, pleasure". Technically any recreational activity qualifies.
