It's not a scam. I've talked w/support and its legit. I personally don't think it will make my account much more secure, but every little bit helps. I definitely appreciate Stars making an effort to increase security.
Hoosier this is one of the BEST levels of security you can possibly have and a must do for anyone with significant money there. For someone to break into your account, they would need to know your password AND have the secure ID keyfob thing in front of them.So basically, if they steal your Secure ID generater from your house, they can't get in because they don't know your password. And if they steal your password, they can't get in because they don't have your secure ID generator.Mark

wouldnt a keylogger defeat the purpose of the secure ID?

Doesn't sound like a keyfob secureid to me. They plan on emailing the number to your email address. Sounds like just an extra random numeric password to me. Maybe worth doing, but not what these guys are talking about. Not at all what is commonly called a "SecureID" in the biz.

Not a true secure ID. I haven't talked to them, so maybe Hoosier got some info that I don't know about. But just based off their email: What is generally referred to as a secure ID is a small keyfob sized device that you press a button on, and it randomly generates a number based on time and some other factors. The website you are logging into knows this same algorithm so it knows if the secure ID you enter is correct or not because it can generate the same number. Every time you log in, the secure ID number is different. So a keylogger could not break this because if they got the number you entered, it wouldn't do any good because 30 seconds later the secure ID is a different number. If all PS is doing is mailing you a new 'password' that never changes, so now you have to enter two, then that is dumb imo.Mark

Tim, I sent an e-mail directly to pokerstars support to see if it was legit. Not sure if it's been answered already since I didn't read the thread lately, but here:

Hello Ken,Thank you for your e-mail.I can confirm that the e-mail below was sent from our Security Department. The e-mail was sent to a few selected players, before we will beintroducing this feature for all accounts. The Secure ID will be an extra layer of protection, and you will stillrequire your password. We do not require you to provide your password atany time, nor will we be changing any passwords.I hope this has helped to allay any concerns, and if we can be of anyfurther assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.Kind Regards,MaryPokerStars Support Team

Guys,I work in IT (and have done a fair bit of security stuff)If they are using a SecurID token, this is _fantastic_ for your security. As opposed to a password, which is something you _know_. This system also has something you _know_ ie a password, and something you _have_ ie, The SecurID token.Info on them can be found hereSo if you have SecurID, now to get your account hacked, someone would need to do two things rather than one.At the moment someone can steal your password from a keylogger, or from various means. Now they would need to steal your password through these same methods AND steal your SecurID card. The reason for this is that there is an algorithm on the SecurID card, which changes every 30 (or 60) seconds which changes the password, so even if the hacker gets that password, it is only good for that one time, it is not allowed to be used again, and you have to wait for the change over and use the next number.Find out .. if it is SecurID .. GET IT

I was slow in replying .. if its two passwords, one thats generated by them .. no good ..The _main_ way that people are hacked isn't through brute force, but through keyloggers etc .. which will get both passwords ... I would suggest 1 laptop for poker, and another laptop which has _no_ poker stuff on it for your pr0n! ...I agree with Hoos's paranoia about his poker laptop when you have a large online bankroll ...

Sounds like a way to keep bots from logging in...it dont know much about bots but i never imagined them to be logging in and then picking their own tables so I'm not exactly sure what this does...
PRobably not the case.It looks like something that needs to have permissions given by the user themsleves and bot accounts wouldn't do that.

OK, I don't know much about security, but even if the hacker had a keylogger that intercepted your password AND the "new security feature" (NSF), the NSF would have changed for the next log-in, which would prevent the keylogging scum from getting into your account. Only YOU have the random number generator for your account, so a keylogger won't do a damn bit of good, as the input info isn't static. Therefore, the feature is a good thing.

I agree, the question is, do you get the random number generator, or is this just a static number they give you? I think Hoosier was saying he talked to them, and its just a static number, not a random number generating secureID. :(Mark

Aaaaand the plot thickens.WTF?????>Hi, so I guess I would like to sign up for the new random number security >feature that you emailed me about. I'm not sure really how it works, but I >guess you'll tell me. SN = TimWakefield.>>Thanks,Thank you for your email. We have not sent you an email about a new security feature. If you have received an email about this it would be helpful if you could copy and paste it to us. I would also advise you not to click on any links, or reply to that email until we confirm it is genuine or not.Regards,MathewPokerStars Support Team
