Anyone Drive From Phoenix To Vegas?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be in Phoenix for 2 1/2 weeks and will have 5 days free in the middle. I'll have a rent-a-car with unlimited mileage and was wondering if I should drive to vegas for a few days. I want to play some actual live poker for once and check out the cardrooms. Vegas is as far East as i've ever been and was wondering how the drive is. I'd rather drive than fly so I can take in new sights but if it's like a total desert with absolutely nothing to see I won't bother. I did drive from San Diego to Vegas once and liked it, although there were some boring stretches. I've been in Hawaii all my life so practically anything would be interesting except total desert.

hmmm, Hoover dam would be interesting but don't know if I would enjoy the desert drive, I was hoping there would be more stuff to see.

Bah - you're in the middle of the desert, what really could there be to see? It's only four hours each way, and you get to spend 5 days in Vegas. That sounds like a no-brainer to me. I have driven could drive four hours with my eyes closed.

LOL. Arizona has some of the most beautiful stuff in the country to see. Unfortunately, the drive from Phx to Vegas doesn't take you through any of it. :)Mark

its an interesting drive. lots of brown. but flagstaff is pretty cool place to hangout on the way. hoover dam is cool and is good for about 10 minutes of dam jokes.
Its quicker if you diagonally up through Wickenburg, instead of going north to Flag then west. Also, you can avoid Hoover Dam by going the Bullhead City route, which I suggest right now and for the next 2 years until they get that dam bridge built :club: It adds about 15 mins to the drive, but removes the variance you get crossing the dam.Mark

I drove from Sedona, AZ to Laughlin, NV and it was one of the most enjoyable and awe-inspiring drives of my life. I am from the east coast, so the elevations out there are new to me though. If you have time to kill, Sedona is one of the most beautiful places in the US, and there is a card room somewhere between Phoenix and Sedona too!Laughlin, NV has some casinos as well. I found a very juicy 1-2 NLHE game there that morphed into a Pot Limit HORSE game. Was great fun, won $400, comped a room and breakfast buffet too. River Palms Casino.

Well, after driving this 3 times in the past month and a half I think I qualify as the current expert so to speak. The drive is really not that bad, and as Balloon said, go in the morning both ways. Just for fun I tired to see how fast I could make it without killing myself. The best time I made was just under 4 hours. There are towns and traffic and I just do not think you can go any faster and not kill yourself or someone else. Again the key here is go early, 5 AM-ish.I drove north on I-17 a few miles out side of the City and then took the Care Free highway to the West and went up thru Wickenberg. From there north to the I-40, West to Kingman, west again thru Laughln, and then to vegas from there. Most of the road has been improved and there are plenty of passing lanes that have been constructed and lots of freash smooth asphalt. I loved it.Like Mark stated, avoiding the dam insures a little faster commute, as they are constructing one of the most impressive bridges ever built.THAT said, if you intention is not speed, but scenery, the desert is beautiful IMO. And if you can appreciate incredible engineering feats then by all means, once you get to Kingman, choose the route that takes you more north over Hoover Dam. You will get to see this bridge under constuction and alos see the dam itself (which is worth a stop at the visitor center for a tour. It is amazing...if you ike this sort of thing). Some of the drive can be boring for sure, but not so horribly that it should not be done. Especially if you are from Hawaii and have not seen much of this part of the country before. I say do it. Enjoy Arizona. Lemm know if you need any tips and I'm sure Mark or a few others can give you a little help if need be.A bit of irony...You are from Hawaii, right? Balloon is going to Maui soon and I will be there for a week at the end of this month. But the only things I plan on driving there is a Titleist and a golf cart at Kapalua. B)

If you leave in the morning like nutz suggests, you should def do the Hoover Dam drive. It's faster as long as there is no traffic, and anytime I've left Phoenix at 4-5am on a Saturday, I've NEVER found traffic on the Dam that early (7-8am), so its worth it to go that route.

There's Joshua trees north of Wickenburg on US93 and Route 66 in Kingman. I do the drive at least every six weeks and always go over the dam. Make sure to take all the the dam pictures you like and visit the dam gift shop. :icon_biggrin:There's also the new Grand Canyon Skywalk between Kingman and the dam.http://www.incadventures.com/trips/grandca...CFRHOhgodZnE1sQ

make sure the AC in your car is in good shape. did the drive a bunch of times a few years ago. if you have a quick car it tends to be more fun as you get to play "hurry up and pass before i hit oncoming traffic" for hoursdon't leave any CD jewel cases in your car as they will melt if you leave your car out in the sun for a few hours
