Jerry Yang And Chris Ferguson

Work as a waiter/waitress/bartender and then tell me that tipping should be stopped. Seriously. In all honesty, in restaurant situations, because of the fact that waitstaff gets paid through tips, I think bills should include a manditory 12-15% tip. Anything above that is up to the customer. You'd be surprised how many people simply don't know that waitstaff gets paid with tips... They believe tips are extra, on top of their $9-10 / hr wages. But yeah, I tip the dealer w/ any reasonable pot I get. Let's him know I appreciate his dealing, and in all honesty, I consider it Karma, kind of. Stop being a tight-wad and tip your damn dealer. As for the OP... if he didn't tip that's kinda heartless, but I think Chris Ferguson by his side might help him from potentially shafting the dealers.
i'm not telling you that you shouldn't tip. i think it should just be included too. i worked as a waiter at a coffee place for a year and a busboy/bartender for a summer so i know how important tip is to the underpaid employee. but what i'm saying is the entire tipping system doesn't work. the whole idea is that you're rewarding good service and punishing bad thereby encouraging people to give great service, yet i don't think it works in reality. all it encourages people to do is give good service to who they THINK will give good tip."oh they are asian, they aren't going to give good tip, don't try so hard""oh they're just teenagers, they can't afford to tip well.""they look rich. i'll bring their order first and check up on them often.""she's hot. i'm gonna service her.""women don't tip as much, generally.""drunk middle aged white guys. GREAT!""oh, a guy on a date with a girl. this should be good."i've seen a no tipping society where the employees don't get tip. i'm assuming they just get a higher base salary and i always had excellent service, even in some crummy fast food joints.EDIT: i usually tip 10 percent for bad service, 15 for average and 20 for great. unless the bill is huge, in which case i lower it a bit.

I totally agree, and I'm just happy tipping is not expected in Aus. Its just like every other profession, if I don't like how much money I get paid I talk to the company I work for, or I find a new job. What I don't do is expect handouts from strangers.
I wish more people in north america had this attitude sadly its untrue.

In European countries dealers are paid a salary. I was told this by several European players during the series and they explained to me why they felt tipping wasn't customary. In Europe they actually hire based on talent and dedication and you're paid accordingly. I love this idea as I'm very dedicated to dealing and I feel that I do a very good job. In the states it's a crapshoot and bad dealers ruin it for the rest of us by pissing off players.

I feel that tipping a dealer is more of a Karma thing more than anything else. Although I dont tip my friends who deal me a winner in a our home game, so maybe I just want to even out the free drinks you get while playing. And a special thanks to gobears for starting this thread and making me realize that I didn't tip my waitress enough tonight at the golf course, now i feel like an ***

Unfortunately they also charge insane time in Euro casinos. Take a look at the Aviation Paris website. Most limit game players pay 1BB per hour in time. Imagine trying to grind a living playing 20/40 at 40 an hour time...not possible. The pot/no limit games are even worse in most cases. I've been on both sides of the felt and the tipping system we have in place is better then paying out the arse for time.

It's not my fault that Harrah's takes a percentage out of the prize pool.
See, this is the part I don't get. Nobody said it's your fault that Harrah's is a bunch of greedy bastards. But it's not the player's fault either is it?? So why would dealers expect the same tips when their employer is already ripping the players off? It's Harrah's you should be pissed at.

heres the deal look at how much harrah's put in there pocket off the main event alone. i am to lazy to look it up but i think it was close to 4 mill that did not go into the prize pool.6380? entries and a 57 mill prize pool, out of all the touneys how much did harrah's put in there pocket?when you win a tourney of that size what is the % that the casino pulls off the top of your prize to go to the dealers before you get your check?.the 4 mill they already pulled of the top proboly does not include the % you pay so the figure is way more than 4mill.I am a B&M player rarely do i play on the net.when i am playing live i pull a pot i set aside 1 of the lowest chips to the side of my stack for the dealer.if the dealer follows through with correct procedure i give them the stack i built up when they leave.Look on HSP what are they throwing the dealer every hand a $5 chip? I was sitting on a 10/20 limit and had a mid 60's woman at my table. when she seen i was not tipping every hand she crawled up my azz and demanded that i tip the dealer.i looked her strait faced and said i will tip what i want when i want this dealer is not following procedure and is not going to get squat from me.that started the verbal fight that ended with the floor asking me to leave because i did not have the right to say that.i told the floor man he can fck himself and have never been back.i will tip if they are doing there job but its tough to play and beat the rake when the blinds and 10% of every pot go to the house.

I think this is all bullshit. I have to put up $10,000. Battle 6000 people to win the event and I have to give you 200k?WTF is this? These ****ing dealers and pit bosses are making tons of money from all the tournament fees and now they want more?Sure if a dealer's been good to me and dealt me a lot of winning hands, I might give extra, but the other ******* dealers, f em. They are crying of not getting tipped, if you don't like getting paid 40 dollars an hour with an hour break every hour, dealing ****ing cards, then leave don't hound these people that worked really hard to win some money and who knows will lose it all back in a few months, will the dealers give the tip back?

Do you tip the lottery guy for selling you the winning ticket NOT.....most lottery sellers get a comission anyways!!same here. NO tip !!
at the grocery store i werk at, we occasionally get tips and what not from people that hit say 500$ on cash 3 or a scratchoff. from kind people like that it makes me want to tip dealers if they provide premier service. if they do a shitty job then that's different. if i win say the ME, that 8.25 ****ing million before taxes. to me wtf is another 100K if i'm a satisfied customer.

This has been discussed ad nauseam. If you want to tip, you do, and will continue to. If you don't, that's fine as well, others will make up for it. I think it's funny that the people who don't tip, get upset and defensive. Then the exclamations and expletives come. Then you defend yourself against invisible attackers who just explain why there is tipping. I would place any amount money that the majority of poor tippers aren't that charitable in general, so saying you would rather give it to charity is fairly weak. That's your choice. There's no reason to get your panties in a bunch. I just wouldn't recommend going to the same places where you receive service on a regular basis. They'll remember, and your experience will reflect it. But then again, then you can cry about how poor service is, and that's the reason you don't tip. In the meanwhile, the people who do get it will laugh, drink, eat, and have a good time. You can feel superior and keep your five dollars. Your money really isn't missed, and you're not really important in the scheme of things. Variance wins out.

I just wanted to say that overall the dealers at the WSOP were AWFUL. There were a few who literally didn't know the rules for some of the games. Also, in general the floor staff was pathetic as well, so you can't just blame the dealers. However, there were a number of dealers that were very good and probably deserved to be tipped above and beyond the 1.8%. Unfortunately, if you leave a general added tip after you win, both the doinks and good dealers get to split it. I would have tried to find a way to compensate the dealers who truly deserved it. I'm not sure if this would have been possible, but after playing at the Rio every day for ~45 days, you pretty much know who deserved an "extra" tip and who didn't.

I averaged 150.00 a night waiting tables, mostly because most people don't lower the tip because they spent to much. Looks like you took your own prejudices and figured everyone thinks that way. Really, reading your whole statement makes me want to kill kittens. You obviously have no clue.

This is probably the most ridiculous thing said in the thread. You do realize that the dealers aren't personally responsible for your luck, right? Also, some of the dealers at the Rio were quite awful. I had one lady that dealt at my 5/10 NL table for half an hour. I think 50% of the hands ended up being misdeals. We probably only played 8 hands while she was there. That said, GS was obviously one of the exceptions.

If you really want to spread a little karma in the world.. Tip your gas station attendents, drive-thru window girls, and your convenience store clerks, if they are quality.. Because trust me, those folks are the ones with the really $#!tty jobs..

wrong. you are assuming things buddy. i'm quoting other people, not myself. are you so thick headed that you can't see i'm making fun of those quotes? they're not just from my limited year as a waiter compared to your almighty and all knowing 10 years, but from what my brother (owns a restaurant in toronto for 3 years and going) says his waiters say. and seeing how well a country that doesn't tip functions.and when i said i lower the tip for expensive meals, it's lowering it in relation to myself. i still give more than 15 percent. if i'm treating my friends and spending 200 dollars for 40 minutes of service, i'm not going to give 40 dollars as tip. 35 is more than enough.did you even read the things i wrote or did you just skim and then attack and then post something useless like wanting to kill kittens.what did i write that you disagree with? the quotes? cuz i've written that i don't believe those, and they are ridiculous. i also think people should tip, tip should be inlcuded, and said that i myself tip 20 percent, but think if we function like a japan, it could be better. please enlighten me oh-exultant-king of tip advice and consultation of the errors of my opinion.oh and if you really must kill kittens. by kittens i hope you mean your bankroll. :club:

As a waiter for the last 5 years, I can tell you, most people follow those exact guidelines. A black couple comes in, no one wants to wait on them, so I take extra tables. I give the same service I would give to anyone else, and what happens? I leave with the most money every single night. Everyone's money is green. More tables = more money. Don't ever sacrifice service though. Its so easy to be so good at this job, and its appalling when I personally go out, because anyone who has ever waited tables, then turn around and go out themselves can attest to, you find something wrong with the service you get. I will be the first to agree that the vast majority of tipped employees are quite bad, and usually rely on the better team members to continually bring back the customers. People like getsprung, and myself are the ones who do deserve tipping IMO. We take our job seriously, and never compromise what we do, whether we know you're going to stiff us or not.

I'm all for tipping and I have absolutely NO problem doing it. Proof is that I usually leave 20-25% for good waiters/waitresses, conversely I leave 10% for bad waiters but I've never not left a tip, I leave tips for haircuts, something that is rarely done, and I always tip the dealer no matter how small the pot I drag is. So it's safe to say I'm a pretty generous guy when it comes to tips. But why should the guy who won $8.5 mill have to pay more than the guy that won $6 mill? Why does 1st place have to pay more than 2nd? They both received the same service for the same duration but one is expected to pay more than the other? I think everyone should pay an X amount no matter what they finish, that is, if they finish in the money. Maybe final table pays X amount more, but I don't think someone should have to pay more than another simply because they had a good day.$8.5 million or not, $100k is still $100k and I think it's a little excessive. Maybe if I had such a huge score like that then I would be more inclined to tip that amount of money, but from the outside looking in, I think it's ridiculous.Whether the dealers like it or no, they work a low education job. They don't deserve to make $100k/year. They deal cards. Something a 16 year old with no previous experience can pick up and learn in 2 months or less. IMO, dealers are overpaid.
Ironic you feel this since your own, self-described, tipping method is base DIRECTLY on how much your bill was. Do the waiters at an expensive retaurant deserve more for refilling your drink than the waiters at Denny's??

good observation here.i think this is what i was getting at when kitten killer went rambo on me. when meals are very expensive i'll lower my tip a bit from 20 percent, but when it's lunch or something and the bill is small, i'll raise my tipping because i feel that i should be tipping for the service and not the cost of the food.why should someone get tipped less during the lunch (cheaper bills) rush when people are SOOOO demanding b/c of lunch time constraints, but more during dinner (more expensive bills) when it's a bit more relaxed. we are tipping for their service and attention right?

I don't just tip, I overtip.....that is my philosphyand btw Yang is also going to tip the government...about $4.2 million dollarsSuprised no one asked Get Sprung what he recieved total from the tip pool for the whole WSOP?Either it's going to sound like a lot, or it's really small. My guesss....$2500 for the whole month.Close? Anymore and good for you, any less and you should not return

I don't even play poker, nor know anything about the dealing situation at the world series, but do these smug assholes really think they deserve 250k for dealing cards for, at most, a couple of days?
Why the fuck are you here?
Seriously you people have no clue. Do a little research before you freak out and say people shouldn't be tipped. In cash games dealers make absolutely NO extra money from the casino and only make $6.43 an hour. So by your calculations dealing is a minimum wage job and should be rewarded accordingly? That's insane. I take my job very serious and politics make it so that I only get 3 days of tournament dealing a week and the rest is cash games. If you're not able to get guaranteed tips from the rake in the tourneys you're on your own. I deal the same quality in either cash games or tournaments but I agree that others do not. It's not my fault that Harrah's takes a percentage out of the prize pool. Pretty sure I didn't agree for Harrah's to take more money out of the prize pool.Seriously people, do a little research before you freak out. I agree that he shouldn't have tipped anything on top but to say that never tipping is a good plan is straight up obnoxious.
Mimimum wage is $7 in Illinois. JS.
heh, he prayed to Jesus the whole time, and so shouldn't come as a suprised that Jesus helped in the cage too...
