Forgot To Tip A Dealer

Recommended Posts

After I won this satellite, it totally slipped my mind to tip the dealer and by the time I remembered I was already gone! :club: I forgot partly because I received an actual receipt and couldn't get cash instead. Anyways...few questions.1. What's the general consensus on tipping for satellites where you cannot receive cash? For instance this was a $110 satellite into a $1050 tourney2. Any way to remedy the situation above given that I don't go to the casino that regularly? I don't think it's a really big deal as he probably won't remember me but I also don't want to be thought of as an asshole next time I see him.

I commend your attitude and I always tip the dealers at cash games but I also forget to tip them in tourneys. There is nothing you can do about it now but if he happens to deal a tourney for you again then tip him twice. He will surely appreciate it.Another thought I have is that this is their job so technically we don't really have to tip. (Flame away folks :D)

I'd give him $25 or $30 next time I see him. It really depends on how good the dealer is.
Wow, that's a big tip. As far as tournies go I wouldn't know about tipping. I just usually throw the dealer $1 or more depending on the amount of the pot I win when it's cash games.

Dealer is considered a tip based income job. They are making minimum wage at best. That is why you SHOULD tip them when possible.I am not exactly how it works, but I am sure there is a % of the juice that the casino gives the dealers for any tournament they deal.Dealers usually make about 20$ a down (30 min). however, you must factor in that they don't get 16 downs in an 8 hour shift, and they also have to tip out the floor staff at the end of the night. I am currently trying to get a job dealing at a casino, and have done a lot of research. Please be kind to your dealers :icon_biggrin:edit: an example of the casino's paying the dealers would be at WSOP, they with held something ridiculous like 10% of each buy in. I am sure a majority of that went to the dealers, servers, etc. At least I hope that is the case since WSOP was bringing in a lot of sponsor money (degree, Millwalkee's best light, etc).

Obviously. It's not that big considering it was for a $1000 seat.

Actually, a $25 tip on a $1050 win is only about 2.3%.Edit: Which is fine, but it's not alot by any means.

Interesting. I was just thinking about the norms of tipping dealers in tournaments. I generally tip during Cash play, but have only played in a Casino tourney once and didn't cash. Does just the winner generally tip? What about tourneys where you can get extra chips for a dealer "tip"? Does this eliminate the need for a tip at the end of the tourney? For example at the Nightly Tourney @ Caesars you can get an extra $1,000 chips for a dealer tip of $10 - which the dealer puts directly into his/her pocket. Every player @ my table elected to exercise this option.

I played a few tourneys in Vegas last weekend and was fortunate to cash in two. In each case, as I was getting paid, the cashier "reminded" me that she could accept tips for the dealers. So I guess the answer is "anyone who cashes" generally could/should tip. I basically tipped the little bills I won (4 out of $104, and $7 out of $147), so my tips amounted to about 4-5%. Honestly didn't know what the right amount was, but that seemed OK. If I'd won, it would've been more, obv.

I think 4 or 5% is pretty standard. From what i've heard.

We actually had to correct him quite a lot...nice guy though haha. He didn't know the dead button/bb/sb rule and various other things for tournament play but either way should've been tipped because he missed out on cash game dealing for over an hour.I'll tip him when/if I next see him.
just out of curiosity, was this for the the AZ state tourney, and did you qualify at Casino AZ?
Yes and yes...definitely looking forward to it - will be my first major tourney!

I'm sorry but I hate tipping dealers...I've only played at a few indian casinos in and around Southern Cali, but from my experiences the dealers haven't done a particularly good job. I've seen them misread the board, miscount how many chips are in a side pot, etc. I'm already getting kinda mad thinking about it. Basically I don't tip people that don't even do their job right..I'm sure bigger, better casinos have competent dealers that deserve tips, but it shouldn't be considered a given..

When I was in Vegas last year I chopped a tourney at Fitz's for $652 each. I tipeed the 52 dollars, the other guy did not tip. When I played there the next night the final table dealer nor the floor person rememberd me. Oh well. I always tip something if Icash.

I have always tipped dealers in cash games and in regular tournaments when I finish in the big money (top 3 or 4). That being said, I have never even *considered* tipping the dealer in a satellite tournament, nor have I seen anyone else do that. As far as I'm concerned, until I actually win a cash prize, there is no need to tip.I commend you on your courtesy and etiquette, but I suggest you don't let it bother you, and you can tip them when you win the tournament that you won entry in.

See I was actually in two minds about it. On the one hand, if I don't cash in the main tournament I'm down my satellite entry fee and a tip (had I tipped). Also for all he knows I could have been losing money at the casino before I played the satellite (which I was). But on the other hand, he did deal back to back sats. meaning he wasn't able to get his usual tips from cash games. It's doesn't really bother me but it did raise a question in my mind.------------------Thanks for the replies...
