Hello.Something i have read in a stupid bets site but i am wondering about it, does suit really matter? what is the law concerning this issue and does it have a difference in ring games and tournaments?"My poker buddy says that in tournaments, if 2 players both have the same hand then they will both get the same share of the pot. I know for a FACT that this is not true and a "hearts" suit will always rank higher! And I'm going to prove my friend that SUITS MATTER right here!" (this is the quote from the site: betsgowild.com)Cheers.

It cant happen in no limit either....limit/no limit does not change how many cards come out. The answer to the question is in most games, no suit does not matter. A hand is decided by high card an dif the two hands are identical (except suit) they tie and the pot is split. There are certain games where suits matter such as when drawing for a high card, the "suits matter: rule can be on if both players agree. The order of suit rank is SPADES, HEARTS, DIAMONDS, CLUBS. (it is in resverse alphabetical order if you cant remember it). In casinos when they deal to see who gets the button or who gets the chip during a race off of smaller valued chips, they will go by suit rank.

They are referring to the fact that is it statistically more likely make a Heart flush than a spade flush, but everybody knows that.

In poker, suits don't matter.I have to commend the variety of amazing (sarcastic) replies in this thread alone though. I'm pretty sure the OP is much more clear on things now. I especially love the limit hold'em vs no-limit hold'em discussion surrounding the possibility of conflicting flushes... classic.

The only financial implication for suits in poker that I can think of is the bring-in stud games.Eg if 2 Kings are showing for door cards in Razz the 'highest' king based on the order mentioned above has the forced bring-in

Suits are also used in poke to break ties in chip races when coloring up.

It matters in Stud, no?If you had the AKQJ9 flush in spades, would you win the pot over the AKQJ9 flush in diamonds?I'm pretty sure spades are the highest ranking suit... or is it just a chop here?

spades is the highest. they use that to determine who brings in when two or more people get cards of the same rank as their upcard. So in stud, as unlikely as the hand above mentioned would occur,,I believe spades flush would win.he and omaha dont matter obviously.

What? Are you serious? No.Suit's don't determine who wins the pot, ever. The only thing that suit is used for is determining who brings it in.Also, in tournaments, suit is often used to determine deal before play begins.

Bring in's are the only part of playing a poker hand where suits matter.

OP-- so there is absolutely no confusion: SUITS DON'T DETERMINE THE WINNER OF A HAND IN POKER. EVER. My spade royal flush and your heart royal flush will tie every time, in every game. It is true that in flop games like holdem and omaha, there can only be one possible flush on board, so this situation will never arise, but it does happen in stud games, and it's a tie. Suits matter only for the purpose of determining who has the 'bring-in bet' in stud games, and in tournaments, during the racing off of chips (some casinos, like the Borgata in AC, also use the high card, by suit, for determining who gets an odd chip in a split pot. Others use a players position relative to the dealer)

That's why I asked the question, douchebag.

It's a chop. As stated over and over above... suits only matter for the bring in and chip races. They never determine the outcome of a hand.
