gmanshade 0
i found this here: http://www.cardrunners.com/fusetalk/blog/i....cfm?forumid=13i bet this is a closer to what it is like to be a live tourney pro than most of what you see/hearby the way, if you don't know him the author is an online pro and poker teacher###Random Thoughts I've been sick for the past 24 hours or so and have been laying around, sleeping, doing nothing a lot. In times like these I usually just think a lot because whenever I'm not doing anything I'm usually actively thinking. I've thought about a decent amount of things also while playing these stupid donkaments over the past week. I'm going to talk about some of them now. I'm already really tired of the whole live poker scene. I don't HATE vegas by any means, but i do hate the tourney circuit and all the bs that goes along with it. For the most part, these players are miserable. They berate dealers, act like they are celebrities, look down on players who aren't in the "in" crowd, etc. It's almost like high school all over again, except it is a bunch of grown men (and occasionally women, who often times i've found are even worse with this stuff). It's amazing how many people are broke. I'm not going to name names or anything, but so many of these "pros" are just guys/girls that won a tournament, quit their job, and decided they were good enough to be pros. There are a handful of people who stake lots of tournament players, i'd guess over half the people who regularly play the circuit are staked in some fashion. Some of the great players, even. It's just so freaking hard due to the nature of tourneys and due to the fact that you probably have to spend 150-200k a year, not including buyins, to live the lifestle that all these guys live. The online players are the ones with most of the money. It's amazing how many online guys I know that are making mid 6 figures a year or more, and have been for the past couple of years. They don't have to spend a ton of cash to sustain their lifestyle (although some do) and they generally are better players due to seeing more hands and not being drawn to the game because they are degens, rather drawn to the game because it presents a challenge and a way to make a solid, steady income. The typical online guy is a college kid who is average to above average intelligence. He has some gamble to him but mostly picked up poker because it was a way to challenge himself and try to make some quick money, not just another way to get some action. The typical live player was drawn to the gambling lifestyle because they have always had a ton of gamble in them. They were former poker dealers, blackjack junkies, craps players, etc. that found poker and realized they could actually make some money at it. Before the internet boom, the level of play was SO BAD at casinos that anyone with some common sense that read a book or two could beat the mid to upper limits. It's not to say these players aren't good, because some of them are amazing players, it's just that by nature they have more leaks and also don't work as hard at their game as some of internet phenoms. It's just really sad for me to hear stories about players who are down on their luck. I really hate to see people suffer and I just see so much of it in Vegas. My point of this isn't to bash live players by any means because I have a ton of respect for what they do, it's just to reflect on the whole poker scene and reaffirm my decision to avoid playing any meaningful amounts of live poker/tourneys. The other thing I have realized is that the happiest people on the poker scene are the guys who are out here for fun. The guys like Guy from the Cirque de Solei, traders/hedge fund guys (by the way, congratulations to Dan Shak's wife who got 2nd in the 3k NL event, that was so cool), and random entrepreneurs who come out to vegas to blow off steam. These guys don't need to win and because of that they just enjoy themselves. It's all just a fun time for them, and for that I am pretty jealous. This is why I don't envy the guys who are making way more money than I am playing the highest poker games out there. My goal is to eventually be like some of the rich entrepreneurs who just enjoy the game, even though they take it seriously. I hope in 10-20 years I can have 50 million bucks, come out here for fun, donk around in some 300-600nl and the main event, and just enjoy vegas for the reasons people are supposed to, not try to grind out some small edge to make mid 6 figures a year. tc

ObeyTheDog 0
Good post.Having spent the better part of the month at the Rio, I have similar sentiment.I live in Vegas, so I guess my perspective is different, but I have tried to embrace my love of the game and the challenge and not let the degens and the "other" crowd get me down. Seriously, it is like high school. The "in" and "out" and the "other" crowd. It's just plain sad sometimes. The things I've seen "pros" do, namely Phil Laak and Phil Gordon, kinda saddens me. Reminds me how much I really do genuinely hate people with massive egos. On the other hand, I've met some really cool people, people who I think "get it" the same way I do. Guys like Dustin Dirksen, Noah Boeken, or this CEO from back east, or Perry Friedman. I guess what it boils down to is, if you seriously want to do this to earn income while challenging yourself, you have to be willing to take the bad with the good, to shut out the crap and embrace the spirit of the game.I have new respect for Taylor Caby.
