Please Help. Laptop Won't Connect Wirelessly Anymore

Recommended Posts

Hi.Possible Useful Background:Last night Charter Cable did some maintenance on the Internets; so I had no connectionsToday, Hardwired connection is fine.I have a Compaq LaptopProblem:Laptop will not connect to Internet via Wireless connectionThe WLAN is Enabled.Hardwired to Router, it works fine.I'm looking all around the IntraWeb and getting lost in tons of FAQs and trying stuff, like powering down (which used to always fix it). I'm sitting right next to the router and it still says "Cannot Connect to Wireless Network"In the list of availble Networks, mine is not listed. When in IE and I run a "diagnostic" (because it won't connect), it does list my network, then I choose it and it says "Windows Cannot Find the Wireless Network"The Router "WLAN" light is illuminated, fwiw.My wireless phones are not on 2.4Ghz and nothing was changed in the physical set up.***************Is there anything in the Internet Options I may have messed up (I did recently update a Firewall, adding some rule for a port; but that was via Norton)Any help here or PM's would be great.I know this is vague and I"ll be glad to provide more detail to help.I'm just too ignorant to know what is relevant.thanks for any help.I'm sort of a nice guy.

well....Like all my PC troubles, I never figure out the problem - even when it's fixed.Normally, I don't even know what I did and it starts working.I re-ran the Router Set Up Software. It didn't even act like it had ever been run before on the pc.Anyway, it works now.I chose a different Network Name and the old name still does not show up in the list of availble networks.oh well.I want to thank everyone who helpd me

You should probably re-run the Router Set Up Software. it will probably act like it had never been ran on the computer before. that should work. you'll probably have to set up a new network name because the old one probably won't show up on the available networks list.

Try sitting on top of the router. That'll fix it.

it sounds like you might need to reset the router. should be a button on the back of it that is pressable only by a pin. hold that in for 30 secs and then release. if you have cable, it's usually DCHP, so you shouldn't have to authorize via a username and password. if you do know you have to, set up in the router's easy (192.168.1.1, change it to PPPoE and then type in your username and password). if it's still not working, DON'T CONTACT LINKSYS. just go into a yahoo computer chat, because linksys support has no clue how to fix it themselves.actually, you might have to give yourself a static IP address on your wireless connection. that'll be in the control panel under network connections. just right-click on your wireless connection and set it to manually configure IP. use an IP of 192.168.1.120 so it won't interfere with other devices. default gateway will be 192.168.1.1, and the DNS addresses will be found on your router. that also could make it work.personally, this is why i don't use linksys because this happened to me literally 10 times in one month. and the agents knew nothing about how to fix it (that was documented in a thread i posted where i wrote a rant letter to linksys corporate), plus i had training from verizon on how to fix linksys routers, and couldn't fix them (i had maybe 500 calls, and fixed one), and that is why i buy netgear, and suggest them to everyone.but, hopefully that will fix your problems, it's the only fix i've found in that situation.
