Famous Christian Poker Players?

I think you're missing the fact that a lot of people consider themselves jewish culturally without practicing the religion. It's a legit possibility that Barry G considers himself to be a jew without believing in god.
I think you're missing the fact that I never once claimed that Barry isn't a Jew. I simply stated that according to information that I find trustworthy, the man is an atheist. Then the world kind of turned upside down, which is weird.

I just assumed that when you kept answering 'he's a jew' comments with 'he's an atheist' retorts that you didn't understand you can be both. You seemed to be trying to correct people as opposed to just building on what they were saying.

Possibly, I guess. I don't really understand claiming to be part of a culture based around a religion without subscribing to the religion. Religion (in my mind) is one of those things that you're supposed to be 100% with or not at all. I'm one of the not at all people, obviously. No offense intended, the only people of Jewish faith (or culture) that I know personally are from this site. I'm pretty ignorant about the rules I guess.I was brought up as a Presbytarian Protestant, but I don't claim to still be one when asked, see my point?

I think Barry is a non-pracising Jew or an atheist with Jewish values, summin like that.It depends if you are talking about practising christians, or born christians
There is not such thing as a "born Christian," it's a decision you make when you have the wherewithall to make it. Just like nobody is born and atheist or a buddhist.

No offense taken, obviously. This is what I was (poorly I guess) trying to explain. I'm not sure I can do it that well in writing...especially being too lazy to write very much.

I do, and I respect that. When asked I say that I'm jewish but don't really believe in religion. I know it sounds weird, but I consider being jewish to be in my blood...part of my ethnicity as opposed to just religion.

Not sure if you've heard of him, but Danny Robison is a Christian...http://www.pokerplayernewspaper.com/viewarticle.php?id=1557He was partners with Chip Reese when they first came to Vegas and according to the article, Chip's also a Christian.
Robison is a born again, he developed a Stu Ungar-like cocaine problem but managed to kick it before it kicked him. Now he offers bible study courses to professional gamblers, calls it God's Winners Circle or something along those lines. Hey, whatever makes him happy I guess. I find it kinda funny that he's a bible thumper who's still not above playing high stakes 7-card with Larry Flynt, I guess the allmighty dollar still rules supreme. I'm kind of judgemental today, I'm discovering.

You'd be hard pressed to find anyone that doesn't bend and/or break the rules of their religion, regardless of how conservative they are, in order to benefit themselves in some way.

Meh, there's not much else to do.

in Judaism is not neccasarily a contradiction to be aetheist and jewish. Obviously the more traditional, observant jews will not consider them to be Jewish on the same level (this is a small minority known as chasidim) but there is a sect of Judaism which is known as humanistic judaism. They dont beleive that there is a god but they beleive in the message and culture of Judaism.

True dat, one of my biggest problems (maybe *the* biggest) with organized religion as a whole.

I didn't know there was a name for it...change 'don't believe' to 'don't know if' and it pretty much sums up my view.

you may want to look into it. I dont know where you live, but in most cities with a decent jewish population they have a temple or two.

Pot Odds, you lost that pretty bad.ROG seems smart, I like him. Plus, he has my favorite Homer Simpson quote in his sig.Speedz, I'm pretty sure aj read that right, and his opponent meant religion, not ethnicity, since the word "Athiest" does not pertain to ethnicity.Speedz, you're a Jew.The whatever journalist was quoted as saying "I wonder if any other sport has such a strong Jewish showing" or something, was clearly insinuating poker has a lot of Jewish players because it's about money.DavidG, good start, don't go thinking you're me though. Finally, Speedz, you're a Jew.

QFTAlot of Xians like to put "Jews" into the religion box, but it's much more complex than that, it's a social tradition and ethnic identity. My best friend is jewish, celebrates all holidays, takes immense pride in his jewish identity and culture, and doesn't believe in god in the slightest. Greenstein being an atheist and a Jew is not the oxymoron that it might seem to those who's religion isn't tied into their culture/ethnicity (the only thing that I see that it compares to in xainity is for like the Irish Catholic, who may not believe in God, but being an Irish Catholic is a huge part of their sense of self) Add "knowledge of jewish identity" to things pot odds knows fck all about...
