Anyone else enjoy this reasonably? One of the more gory/violent movies I've seen in awhile, perhaps because they can get away with more in a period piece than a simple slasher film because they can always fall back on the "That's what they did back then" excuse.

i haven't seen it, but i'd believe it was a beautiful movie in terms of sets and costumes.but from all that i have read and heard, it's a movie that makes one say at the end "it's a good thing the europeans came to the americas and tamed the savages..." which is pretty outrageous. i wish i could speak more on the issue, but i don't want to since i haven't yet seen it. but as it is a mel gibson movie, i wager that was the moral he intended for his audience to hear. it's come through in some of his other films...signs, for example. the movie is much less about the alien invasion and much more about a catholic priest finding his faith again.i could imagine a movie where the mayan culture is being portrayed as crude, primitive and gretuitously violent, only for the mayan people to be shown the true way (through necessary violence). in his promos he kept belaboring the point about a great end and a new beginning. in this movie, he's in fact calling the invasion an end of a crude, primitive and violent culture for a much better one.

I loved this movie, there is another thread on this floating around somewhere. Yea it was violent, I was expecting way worse though. I thought the costumes and makeup for the villains were awesome. Those guys looked like true bada_sses. I just love revenge movies like this, Braveheart and Unforgiven. My favorite seen was when Jaguar Paw jumped off the water fall and was screaming at his enemies, "I am Jaguar Paw, AND THIS IS MY FOREST!!!!"

The story was a little weak but it was well shot and had some amazingly powerful scenes. The image of the mayans ( or were they Aztecs) is just what mel thinks it is, not historically accurate by any means. It was an entertaining watch, but the story was weak, had good potential tho. He might pull off a masterpiece one day, he knows how to make a movie.
