  1. why does everyone look at these things in such black and white terms. Ivey made an overbet push because he thought there was very little chance he would be called. YOU HAVE TO ACCOUNT FOR FOLDING if you try to figure out the profitability of the play. i dont think it was a particularly good play, but i feel as if most people are approaching it in the wrong way.say ivey makes it 600k and then aaron (or possibly a player behind phil) decides to move in with a hand like AK, AQ or even something worse. it puts phil in a tough spot. he was taking away aaron's opportunity to semibluff him off of a h
  2. i can think of a 2 reason why i shouldnt have to show my hand when im all in.1) it gives other players at the table free information about my playing style.if i get caught in a huge bluff and another player has already exposed his winning hand, i want to muck as fast as possible, so the other people at the table dont know im capable of such a big move.2) occassionaly players miss the true strength of their hand and muck a winner. this benefits those who pay close attention
  3. that's because people who dont know a lot about poker dont understand how mediocre he is. he plays good cards in a straightforward manner and occassionally makes big laydowns. so the book says he's good, but everyone knows how to play by the book. he's weak/tight against good players and tilts easily. he is way too unwilling to gamble in the early stages of a tournament and, as a result, unless the deck hits him in the face for houyrs on end, i dont think he'll ever make it to 10 bracelets.he claims to be one of the greatest players alive but he doesnt regularly play in any big cash games. in
  4. no player who's actually good would fold to a bet when the blind pot commits them. players who cash over 40% are usually very tight in the early going but very willing to push small edges on the buble and in the money. you can probably bluff them out of a couple small pots at 10/15/ and 15/30 blinds, but the person you're describing is a complete idiot.
  5. that is incorrect and ignoring a very important variable: the size of the game and the strength of the other players.I'm sure there are people multi-tabling full table .5/1 limit who can do much better than 3bb/100. If you're talking about something like 5/10 or 10/20, 3bb/100 is a very impressive number and if you're talking about 30/60 or 50/100, it's impossible. regarding the original thread of the forum: that's not really an important number to focus on as long as your ptbb/100 is a number you like. in fact, in nl, that's pretty much the only stat that matter, but somewhere around 55-60% o
  6. i think you're approaching the situation in the wrong way here. playing deep stack nl, you should definitely be raising with JJ or TT to inflate the pot so that you can make more money if you flop a set.offsuit AQ, AJ and AT should be checked almost every time because you are looking to control pot size so that you can showdown your top pair, but when suited it is again advisable to frequently raise to inflate that pot so that your straights and flushes take down more money.also, in a limped pot to you, if you raise with JJ in teh bb, get 3 callers and the flop is 943r, why are you playing "s
  7. im going to assume this is a single table.im also going to assume that the person i quoted above doesnt play singlet tables. you can completely rule out folding as dumping a hand this strong in the position you are in would be a terrible error. you are not chip committed by putting 450 into the pot and are somewhat protected from the limper limp reraising since there will already be so much dead money that he's almost guaranteed a call. if he does push, you can safely assume you're in extremely bad shape against his hand range and you cant call even getting 2+/1 pot odds.the aggressive raiser
  8. i dont know about you guys, but next to the cutoff and the button, the most frequent place im raising from with a weak hand is utg. people always give you credit for a monster and you steal an inordinate amount of blinds.
  9. that is one of the worst folds i hav e ever seen.no one has that small of a hand range for raising at higher blinds levels of mtts with antes when that person has a healthy stack. if you're really that worried that he could have a stronger hand reraise him to 9000 and put him to the test. he'll probably fold and if he pushes you can dump it.if he's a decent player, he'll be trying to frequently blind steal with garbage. especially if he notices that someone like you is folding to every single raise he makes.also, why are you assuming that his larger raise means a better hand? most low limit
  10. the guy did absolutely nothing wrong in the first hand. he even picked up a gutshot on the turn.if you were going to bet the river in hand #2, why did you bet such an incredibly small amount. if that guys willing to call 20 with A high, he would have called you with any pair and you'd be kicking yourself for giving his bottom pair another 20 bucks. you either check behind or you bet enough that he'll actually fold something.
  11. this is the single most painful beat ive ever seen, but it didnt happen to me, it happened to a friend in a game i was sitting in.we were playing 1/2 nl 250max buyin at a poker club on the upper west side of manhattan. 9 handed game, he's sitting on about 550 in chips in the 4th position. 2 limpers to him, he limps with A5dd, 1 more limper, button raises to 12, blinds fold, everyone calls.flop is Q84, all diamonds.he leads out at the pot for 30. the limper calls, the pfr calls and the EP limper c/r's to 100. my friend raises to 250, both players behind him fold and the ep guy pushes for anoth
  12. there are only two things that can be done.1)if i have nothing else to do, i just sit at the $5 max buyin nl game on stars and push virtually every hand for about half an hour. the important part is to needle the people whom you suck out on about their play. this definitely let's you forget about the actualy money you lost and the bad beats you took for virtually no money.2) go out with your friends or hang out with your girlfriend. drinking, smoking and joking around all do wonders. if it's daytime, play some sports or go for a run or something else like that.
  13. ugh, this is getting tired. would somebody please explain to me why a lower variance game with a higher win rate proportional to the standard stack size is worse?limit holdem and no limit holdem are both good games. ridiculing one is just admitting a lack of knowledge of, and skill in, that game.
  14. let's not be ridiculous. we know virtually no one on here actually knows enough about poker to contribute meaningfully to the 2+2 forums.
