This is absolutely classic! I love it! I have now decided that I will be teaching my first born poker from the instant he/she is born. I will hold two black aces in front of my wife's birth canal as the baby emerges. I will read HOH, S/S, Aces and Kings, and others to him as bedtime stories. He'll know the squeeze play, call to steal, M's, the value of suited connectors as well as medium-high pocket pairs. On Christmas and Thanksgiving he'll be allowed to buy-in instead of satellite-in to big tournies. When he's insolent he'll be relegated to play chips.And when he's good.....we'll start an empire!Thanks for the inspiration.born with knowledge of pot odds. -
It really is a wonderful show, the best poker on tv IMO, but they really need to get off of such a low run channel. They spend half of the hour paying the bills!! Drove me nuts lastnight! Mike must have been terribly embarrassed after having busted out after they gave him 4K to stay. I felt a little bad... He's like a big stuffed, toy donkey, ya can't help it.

Couple of things:a. Is it me or is there a rediculous amount of commercials in HSP? I mean one time there was an 8 min comm. break followed by 6 mins of poker followed by another 8 minute comm break! I never noticed cuz I usually watch it TiVo, but WTF!!! The whole episode is like 12 hands.b. I love that Todd Brunson is sitting there with an entire dead cow on his back for the whole season, esp. when he had the massage girl over...too funny watching her knead the tannery on his back! LLOOLc. Matusow is a donkey at life. But the guy must book some big winners. He gets staked for every event. d. My favorite play was DN's 22k(?) bet on the turn v. Minh. Close second was Antonio's production with QQ.

A lot of what youre saying is valid but there is one oversight. Youre talking about betting your hand for value in general when this type of situation arises, bene. But unfortunately a value bet when M's are a bit higher leaves you open to being outplayed. You say its an easy call when the 900 raise comes along and it is, but what about when the villain has 9000 more? You value bet 600 and he makes it 2800. So you cant partly detach yourself from the situation at hand. Value bets are generally good, there is no danger of being outplayed in this hand since there is no leverage room, but you can end up opening a lane for an opponent when a bigger bet might've taken the play away to begin with.First of all, I never agrued about your "heads up tourney" experience, nor do I give a sht. I can make up experience just as much as the next guy online, and all I give a crap about is the logic of your arguments, and if you say making large ovver bets is smart poker, I call bullsht. As for "not knowing if the nine is live, well, you don't know the jack is live either, or the flush for that matter, you just make your best guess, and the most likely hand he has doesn't involve a ten, since he was the preflop raiser, but is most likely a pocket pair ( which you have two overs to half of) or two over cards ( which you have one/ two live cards to)But lets say he does have the ten, and your nine is dead.. you still have 12 outs, right? that's 24 outs into 47.5. We'll subtract two outs for full house redraws, and that's 22 outs in 47.5. Your equity is still 46%, and the pot is still offering you 62% so your still making a mistake to fold one over and a flush draw, even to that retardo over bet. My point is the flush draw isn't something you have to worry about, you're going to get your money against him reguardless. You should be worried about backing AJ offsuit to pay the wrong price for you to call. -
The thing is, this guy was a complete nit. He claims he would've called the 8k raise if no one had re-rasied but I believe him maybe 20%. Honestly, the rasie was worse because of my position then because of my opponent. I am sure a call would've been wrong.wrong.calling sux.8k/52k and we flat call 1/2 his stack with 55 ?Out play him post flop? With 55. -
You're right. I suck. I shoulda gambled sooner. Actually calling was never really an option, shouldnt have even mentioned it. I made so many mistakes on that hand, that right now I just want to throw up.Calling is even worse than raising there, for the same reason..Not only have we put chips in the pot, but we give ourselves no chance to win the pot right then..If someone wakes up w/ a good hand and comes over the top, we have to fold and we didn't even get to see the board..Folding is the best option by farActuarys right...You are really really short by the time you pick up Q10, w/ an m of 2.2 and the blinds only 2 hands away...I think the issue here is not letting yourself get to this point in the first place..I knwo you said you were card dead, but at some point, your going to have to make a stand before you get here -
You're absolutely right. I was UTG+1. I shouldv'e folded or called than folded to the 12000 raise. Had I called or folded, the leader would've called with JJ (what he was debating), lost, and I wouldve been the leader. Ahhh F..K!What position were you when you had 55? Since you said the guy with AA was in MP, that must have meant you were utg +1 or so, which would make me lean towards folding..Yeah you sensed weakness in the original raiser, but with so many people to act behind you, if my assumption is correct that you were in ep, then 55 is probably not going to stand..Add in to the fact that you have an aggressive table, and I'm not a big fan of that hand -
I agree with everyone that this is a must call but I think the issue here is learning to forgive yourself for losing. Understand that there are ALWAYS going to be situations in which you have absolutely no power against losing all yourchips/money. Improve this outlook and expend more energy improving the rest of your game. If you do play live at all, try playing a session in which you do nothing but follow your instinct. I mean raising with bottom pair to what you "know" is a continuation bet, calling to steal a TAG, etc. Basically the plays that occur may work but you dont always use. You may not win but I think letting yourself just play on the edge teaches you and can be useful training.

I played in the $100+20 with add-on at Borgata in AC this Saturday and was doing pretty well, with two tables remaining from 56 starting players, until the following chain of events. Sitting with 52,000 and second in chips at the table and blinds at 1k - 2k, an old man with about 15k to my right makes it 8k. I suspecting some weakness and raise to 16k with 55. A middle position player raises all in to 20k and the button (the table leader) debates for 2 minutes before folding, the old man folds and I of course have to call. The cards are tabled to reveal my 55 v. AA, no surprise there except that the old man says I'm drawing dead, he mucked 55. So that sucked and had me down to about 30k. With blinds increasing, my being completely card dead, and furthermore unable to steal due to not one pot coming to me unraised, I find myself in UTG+1 with 22,000 and blinds at 2k - 4k (500). I do not want to play SS, hope to double up, and still be short then, so with what was my best oppurtunity in an hour I move all-in with QT while I still have some ammo left. The small blind calls with KK, I flop a Q but get no more help. I bust out 14th, four out of the money. Of course I was terribly disappointed and believe that had I held out on the 55 hand I could have coasted through my dead spot and reached the FT. Unfortunately, it didn't go that way and I feel that under the circumstance I took the shots that I had to. QT was obviously questionable but it was such an aggressive table that I couldn't reasonbly expect to have a better spot anytime soon. Incidentally, the highest PP I picked in the whole tourney was 99 and I got AK once but received no action. That whole time I was card dead I kept thinking that I was due for a rush.. Thoughts on this tournament?

Far be it from me to challenge your knowledge here but I think this statement is a little misguided. According to the link, he's made what? A couple hundred thou? What were his buy-in expenses since the 2003 ME? Im guessing he's in the red since then. Anyway I dont know if JH is better than GR but he sure has been having a wonderful WS and that is great to see. I am definitely rooting for him and hope he wins another bracelet. I seriously consider raising the flop for this reason. I think that after all though there is more implied odds, if you catch, by just calling. At this point all you have is a BB lead bet. After the raise and reraise youre getting 6 to 1 to catch, I like the call here. (What if you dont catch the turn and the action goes bet, call, raise? Fold? Could've been reraised by the BB.) I like the river call.The only argument for raising would be to clean up the J and T outs. -
QFTIm asuming you are somewhat new to the game. If so, take a look at SS1, Doyle's chapter on AK. Its not always the way to play it but certainly gives you great perspective on the hand. Essentially, he views it as a drawing hand that can be played aggressively but better passively. Also, it is a wonderful hand to out play people with post-flop as well as get it all-in with PF. Check it outi can't believe you went broke on that first hand. AK is a good hand but i think you have shown an example of exactly how not to play it.also, people seem to be unable to fold the hand (i mean they could never even think of it). don't be one of those people.my guess is that if you learned how to play it better you might enjoy it more.
