  2. Thanks for the responses, guys, sorry for the delay in responding. A few comments, then the results. I took control of the hand on the flop because while I had many outs, I was still drawing and didn't want LP dictating how much my draw would cost me, and I was building the pot anticipating making my hand. I checked the turn because I made my hand and wanted the turn to look like it scared me, thereby disguising my flush. If the player behind me bet the turn, I was reraising. If he checked and we went to the river, it's harder to put me on a flush. By checking the turn, I did gamble no heart was coming on the river. Had a heart came on the river, I was prepared to slow way down and possibly muck to a big bet. Because I was low in chips and sitting on a flush, I was definitely hoping to increase the pot size. On the river, when no heart came, I felt I had the best hand so I retook control with a miniraise. When LP folded, I was essentially HU with the BB. Because of the str8 possibility and me disguising my hand on the turn, I felt I was up against a str8 or another flush when he reraised all in. There's been discussion on here about miniraises being a bad play, but IMO a miniraise is a solid value bet, which is essentially what I was doing. I had the 3rd best flush and because he was in the BB (and no pf raise), I decided to call and come what may. I called, he showed 8h9h, and I scooped.

  4. I've played Tx holdem before with 2 and 3 sets of flops and you could decide which one you wanted to use, increasing bets from flop to river, no checking allowed, all kinds of stupid ways to screw up a beautiful game, lol.

  5. Playing NL omaha is just plain silly. PLO would've limited your losses here.It is correct to fold the best hand sometimes in omaha. I actually do it quite a bit when I have no room for improvement and I'm facing a pot sized bet in a multiway pot, or even HU if the texture of the board is showing flushes AND straight draws. Sets in omaha look nice but they can be very dangerous. IMO trips are a better scenario because it gives me 4 more outs (on the turn) to make a fullhouse as opposed to a set.Tough hand, regardless.

  6. Steal the blinds, then when he comes back and starts crying, console him with soft, sincere words like, "Yeah, man, that really sucked for you.", or "I know how that feels, happens to me alot." , or better yet, "Ouch, dude! I almost feel bad for ya." Then sit back and watch how quickly he tilts his remaining chips away.

  7. First, I'm pleased to see this thread turned into an intelligent discussion, and not a flame throwing party.Second, my apologies to the community for my "wannabe pros" remark. I have my bad days as well, lol.Third, the main point foose was making was missed by most. If someone sits down at a table with $100, then triples that to $300 in a short amount of time, MOST newer players will loosen up and start playing hands they should never be playing, but play them because they're on a rush. I call it the "I can afford this call" mentality.Again, a lack of discipline is the main problem here and foose simply offered a temporary fix for this. Indeed, employing this strategy long term can be profitable, and I'd dare say optimal for those players who lack the discipline to maintain their game regardless of their stack size. It's much easier to say, "Just play disciplined poker at all times" than it is to actually do it.

  8. Hi Ghost. I've experienced what you're going through, and it definitely sucks.I remedy this by stepping down in limits/buy ins and actively work on my aggression. A big part of my game is taking pots when I feel I have the best hand, and when my game weakens up my results suffer, mainly because I allow people to chase their draws even with slightly bad odds.Unlike many players, I have a somewhat reverse mentality when it comes to poker. Many people like having their opponents chasing draws, whereas I don't. If I feel I have the best hand and the board's showing a flush or a straight draw, my goal is to get my opponent to fold, NOT to call their draw. How much aggression this requires is dependent mainly on my opponent. Usually a pot size bet will work against TAG players, but against LAG players I may have to bet more, and against calling stations and fish I may not have enough to push them off that draw. Knowing my opponents' tendencies is crucial to my approach to the game, which is why I'm rarely large stacked in the first couple of levels of a trny. It's also why I'll lay down a big hand in the beginning of a session with no reads on my opponents. If I honestly have no idea how my opponent plays, or can't put him on a hand, then I feel like I'm just gambling, and I can do that at the local convenient store with scratch off tickets. I just realized I'm rambling, lol. My advice, step down in limits and push hard when you think you're ahead. Even if you don't get paid off, constantly making your opponents fold will do wonders to boost your confidence.

  9. Without any reads it's real hard to say, but I can't help but think your pf "misclick" bit you in the azz. That's such a huge raise, I honestly can't say what I'd do without knowing how this guy has been playing. It's definitely not an automatic call, but folding here would be very difficult without a solid read on this guy's style. Did you have any info on this guy?

  10. First off, foose, having lurked for a while, the flames from close minded wannabe pros shouldn't surprise you in the least.Secondly, I for one think your OP was well written, thought out and good intentioned. IMO, it is a strategy that provides a temporary fix for a serious underlying issue, discipline. As you pointed out, this would be best suited for new players who lack the discipline to play the same way regardless of how their session is going. However, I wouldn't recommend to a new player to adopt this strategy as a permanent fix, but rather a method of training one's self to play disciplined poker at all times.I, too, got frustrated with the flamers and still do from time to time, but I try to keep in mind that most posters on here are actually teenagers who feel the need to pump themselves up by disrespecting anyone they remotely disagree with.I hope you continue to contribute to the strat section as I can tell from your OP that you have enough experience to share some insightful thoughts.

  11. As a mainly trny player, there are several strats for rebuys I use.1.Don't rebuy until you go broke. At that time, you can double rebuy. I generally fold everything but big pairs or AK then race it preflop, as in the rebuy period you'll see many people push their stacks in pf with weak holdings. Once the rebuy period is ending, in the last 5 minutes or so, I assess my stack size. If I'm near double the starting chips, I'll continue a TAG style until the add on period. Always add on. If I'm low, I'm pushing any playable hand pf and trying to double or go broke, so I can double rebuy before the add on period. My goal when employing this strat is to reach the first break with twice the starting chips plus the add on(s), which will normally put you just above average. If I win a few races during the first hour, then I'm large starting the second hour and the freezeout phase.2.Rebuy immediately, start with a double stack, and race as many hands as you comfortably can. If I employ this strat, I generally go in with the mindset that I'm willing to spend up to 10 rebuys if I have to, but the goal is to build a super large stack to start the freezeout phase. Always add on. This strat requires a LAG or maniac mindset, but can be very effective if you're willing to spend the money necessary. In either strat, anytime you go broke during the rebuy period you should double rebuy. These strats apply only to UNLIMITED rebuy trnys. For limited rebuy trnys, I employ a freezeout mentality even during the rebuy period. Again, always add on.

  12. I believe Greg Raymer did the calculations for this. Supposedly if your stack would be greater than average stack at the final table do not add-on. If you have less than that, add-on.
What do you mean, because of course he doesnt have an average stack for the final table and you almost never do in rebuys??
During the first break (after the first couple minutes when all or most of the add ons have been purchased) take the average stack multiplied by the # of players remaining. Divide that by 9 and you'll have the average stack at the final table. This is easy to do online, not so much live though.
  13. Great story, PM.Christian, I've saved your offer so I'll pm you next time I'm coming to town. FYI, I carry right handed drivers and left handed irons.
lboarts- Sounds good. I was an instructor in Colorado before I came to Vegas so I'll be interested to see the right handed woods and left handed irons. I don't think I've seen that before.
I'm a natural lefty but was taught to play by a friend who's right handed and convinced me to play righty because most golf courses are set up for rightys. Struggling to improve my handicap, I tried lefty for about 5 years before settling into the same handicap and not improving. Playing a mixed bag has cut a few strokes off my handicap, but I'd still consider myself a hacker, lol. I use a double edged chipper and putter as well as I like to keep the ball above my feet when faced with a lie on a slope.I wouldn't consider myself purely ambidextrous but I do a few things right and left handed, golf, pool, batting to name a few. I chip shuffle righty but can't do it lefty to save my life, lol.I actually got the idea to carry a mixed bag while watching Phil Mickelson a few years ago swing one of his irons upside down right handed when he was snuggled against a tree that prevented him from swinging lefty. I thought, man if he had a right handed iron in his bag he'd be set.I'll definitely be in touch when I come out. That was a very generous offer to the forum, and I for one thank you. lboarts
