  1. I found a video showing some of how they did it. Pretty amazing. I wish they told us the whole story cuz like you said it clearly must be multiple shots stitched together - the part at the very end of the shot where the camera exits the car and then shows the car, and it's a normal car, is clearly impossible to be the same shot. But like you said, the effect is spectacular, and I don't think it detracts from it that it wasn't actually done in one shot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBfsJ7K1VNk
  2. The car scene in Children of Men (a 4-minute shot) took them 12 days. And it's one of the standout shots in cinema history. I'm still not totally sure how they even did it (I read that there was some sort of driving rig attached on the roof which they were able to quickly remove near the end of the shot, but I'm not really sure how the camera worked - also something to do with the roof rig though). http://io9.com/this-...ly-an-840211730 Note: inaccurate headline in that article. Only about 2 seconds of the shot was accidental.
  3. Ok, this show is fucking amazing. I'm not really sure how I missed the fact that there was a new HBO show starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, playing detectives investigating a deranged killer, but somehow I did (miss it). It might have something to do with the very boring title of the show - it sounds like some dull new TNT procedural starring, let's say, Jimmy Smits, but holy hell is it good. Woody is very good, but his character isn't terribly interesting. Kind of your basic hard-working, hard-boiled, hard-drinking detective. But McConaughey, goddam. His character i
  4. 14-minute preview of season 4: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5iS3tULXMQ Also, I finally started reading the books. On book 2 now. They good.
  5. There were actually only 4 courses so he didn't skip any rounds he just messed up counting to 4. The finale was bleh (because crowd-favorite Nina lost), but the really bad episode was the one before the finale, where they kicked off 2 chefs for no good reason in a not-very-interesting challenge. I think they've often had a 3 person finale, but a 2 person finale would be great too if they didn't boot off 2 of the best chefs in one challenge right before it. It felt like Shirley and last-chance-guy got shafted a little bit and the producers missed out on another episode with all of the
  6. Speaking of British shows, has anybody watched Broadchurch? You may have even discussed it here somewhere and I missed it. Anyway, it's pretty good. Dark and brooding and whatever. The plot is basically Twin Peaks (a child is murdered in a small tight-knit community where everybody has secrets, and they bring in an outside detective to solve it), but without the surrealism or satire. So I mean, it doesn't sniff Twin Peaks, but it's not bad. David Tennant takes the place of Kyle MacLachlin, but again without the humor. I don't really like Doctor Who but I do really like David Tennan
  7. Louis CK is bringing a new pilot to FX, with Zach Galifafknadsuyas. http://www.avclub.com/article/fx-picks-up-a-pilot-from-zach-galifianakis-and-lou-106929
  8. The more I reflect on the show the more I like it actually and am looking forward to the next season. It has a whole lot of great aspects, visually, comically, dramatically. It's not perfect and there is some cheese, but it's really great in a lot of ways. Nobody would ever confuse it with The Wire, but it's actually a lot more insightful and beautiful than Lost, which I kept comparing it to.
  9. Btw I watched the rest of Orphan Black. It's definitely worth watching if you have any inkling, which you obviously do. When I compared it to Lost I only listed the bad similarities, but Lost had a lot of good things too (especially early on) and so does Orphan Black. The gay brother is a great character. I think it's available now on dvd, I'm interested in what you think of it.
  10. You'll like this. And by like, I mean be filled with murderous rage. http://www.kenstewar...el_blog/?p=4208 Dude is some random retired cartoonist who never wrote about baseball (he's not a writer) but apparently has an honorary vote, presumably because he gives really good head and/or is related to somebody. His article comes across as parody, but is apparently real.
  11. That episode was kind of dumb. I don't understand why they set up the competition like that. Why would you give anyone immunity and then force a team challenge with small teams? And then the judges were all hoping Nick would bow out despite his immunity, which I also really didn't like. Why give him immunity at all if you're going to try and influence him to give it up and then be all disappointed in him when he tells you to fuck off? The whole goddam point of immunity is that if you're the person who should be going home that day, you get a reprieve. Immunity is useless unless you're on
  12. Gurnick is completely retarded. Not much else to say about it, he's just a huge and total retard. I imagine that there were a couple other Gurnicks out there, but that most of the other people who didn't vote for Maddux either turned in a blank ballot as some sort of personal protest for whatever stupid reason, or didn't vote for him because they knew he'd get in with over 95% anyway and since they can only vote for 10 players they wanted to use their votes for players who they felt needed more support and/or were in danger of falling off the ballot. I agree that he should have been

  14. I kind of assume you guys have all seen Kanye's Bound 2 video, and Franco/Rogen's spoof of it. If you haven't, enjoy. I kind of love the album, and I don't even hate the video (I think it's funny on its own), but the response is amazing.
  15. Greatest comeback I can ever remember, even considering the help they got from the officials. Pats had the ball at midfield with 2 minutes left and one timeout, down by 12. Insane.
  16. Well I even agreed with you that Cano is superior, and I do watch Pedey every day. I don't watch Cano every day though obviously.
  17. Dusty has played 350 fewer, so he has a higher WAR/game.
  18. So, I'm not sure how much we trust WAR as a full explanation of how valuable a player is. But anyway, Cano has a career fWAR of 37.1. Pedroia's is 34.4, but in about 350 fewer games, so he has actually been significantly more valuable over his career according to fWAR. Pedroia did have a mediocre season this year (mediocre for him - he still posted a 3.5 fWAR), but he also tore a ligament in his thumb on opening day and opted to wait until the offseason to have surgery. He said after the season that he felt it affected his power. He played in 160 games with that torn ligament. Basic
  19. Oh for sure. He's not $130m better though.
  20. Yankees sign Beltran 3/45 Red Sox sign Napoli 2/32* Mets sign Granderson 4/60 Mariners sign Cano 30/800 Fun day. *Cherington presumably used his Jedi powers on that one.
  21. Cano: 10/240 Pedroia: 8/110 lol So is Cano the first star Yankees player in their history to leave the team in his prime?
  22. I thought this was pretty strange too. My guess is that the producers said we ain't paying for new sets, so you're doing X more episodes in the prison. That's what happened with that goddam farm. On the other hand I did like the solo Governor episodes, but the whole prison virus was awful.
  23. Also the Tigers signed Joe Nathan for 2/20, which seems like a pretty good move.
  24. In other news, the Beltran rumor of KC that SA mentioned would be great. I think everybody not in the AL Central wants to see KC make the playoffs, and it would be awesome if he was part of it.
