Read the first couple issues of Top 10, it's pretty great, I'm excited to see where it goes. I also slogged through the rest of All Star Superman, which nobody here recommended but people everywhere else rave about. It's awful. I don't know why people think so highly of it. Just terrible. Definitely gonna read Red Son next though. Also V for Vendetta.

Angela Sarafyan, apparently. The gif is from the tv web show Hot Sluts, which I actually saw a long time ago because Alison Brie. It wasn't very good - that gif is easily the best part of the short series. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1471852 -

So, a bunch of my old college friends were in a comedy group in college and most of them have gone on to try and break into the industry, with relative success but nothing too exciting. But now one of them has a cartoon coming out on Netflix. Still, I was like okay that's cool but not a huge deal. But it turns out it is a huge deal, because it's starring goddam Will Arnett, Amy Sedaris, Aaron Paul, Alison Brie, and Paul F. Tompkins. Aaron Paul and Will Arnett are executive producers. Two of my other old friends are also doing voices, and another one did the music (he also did the theme -
I think you might really love a pretty short one that I just read: The Tale of One Bad Rat, by Bryan Talbot who also did Heart of Empire. It's nothing like Empire which is a bizarre alternate universe fantasy satire. One Bad Rat is a story about a girl who was sexually abused, and it's beautiful. It's not sappy, it's not preachy, it's just really good and at least a little bit heartbreaking. I actually haven't read the 4th issue yet so I don't know how it ends. "The Tale of One Bad Rat is an ingenious, intertextual narrative that interweaves the charming, whimsical, and above all, Engl

Wow, thanks for the lengthy recommendation post. Some thoughts: Alan Moore's Swamp Thing - I guess I'll have to check that out. I was actually planning to read a more recent iteration of Swamp Thing because Brian K. Vaughan wrote it, but I guess I'll start earlier. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - I tried to give it a go awhile ago but didn't try very hard. I'll check out some of those other Alan Moore projects too. I'm not sure why I haven't looked at more of his stuff, since I think Watchmen is brilliant. I think I felt like they'd be disappointing or something because the

I was never really into comics as a kid but I've gotten into them a bit recently. I bet there's a couple people here who have read or do read them, and I'm looking for recommendations or just general discussion. What first got me going on comics was some amazing artwork I saw. I dunno if anybody knows Geof Darrow but he's completely brilliant, although he hasn't done a whole ton of work. He seems to do a lot of covers and things like that, although he also wrote and illustrated "Shaolin Cowboy" which is an insane comic. "Hard Boiled," written by Frank Miller, is his real essential work

What Is The Last Movie You Saw?
timwakefield replied to Alter-Ego's topic in Entertainment: Television, Movies & Music
Tim's Vermeer Interesting documentary about a guy who thinks he figured out a way that Vermeer might have used a form of camera obscura to make his paintings, and then sets out to recreate a Vermeer using that method, with no background or ability as a painter himself. The documentary itself isn't perfect, but the story is pretty great and it's a short movie (80 minutes). -
That was such a disappointment, a real chance to steal the game and he didn't even make the goalkeeper save it. That beautiful sneaky set piece in about the 114th minute was even more of a heartbreaker though I thought. Going down 0-2 in extra time only to score twice and go to penalty kicks would have been epic.

What Is The Last Movie You Saw?
timwakefield replied to Alter-Ego's topic in Entertainment: Television, Movies & Music
You should. The book is amazing. I didn't think the movie was that bad (although the end was awful, and I went in with microscopic expectations), it's just so weird that they adapted the book into that. They pretty much took the title and told a completely different story. The book is a whole lot of different people from all over the world doing a post-war debrief with a reporter who's compiling their stories into the book we're reading. There's no Brad Pitt character that I remember, and if there was he'd only appear for 3% of the story or whatever and then we'd move on to the next pe -
I also can't figure out why he didn't kill him in the elevator in Vegas, but instead let him flee and then stalked him all the way back to Minnesota in order to kill him. But I think the reason he left him after cornering him was because he was too injured to do anything else. He knew Lester had a gun and was too hurt to wait him out.

Thoughts on the series finale? I thought it was pretty okay, but I definitely felt let down by the show overall. It started out brilliantly but lost steam. I still think it's weird that we heard nothing else from Oliver Platt after the fish rain, and I wanted something more from Billy Bob. Maybe they could have tied his apparent omnipotence in with Platt more, because as much as Billy Bob was playing at biblical prophecies with all his pranks on Platt, he also was basically a ghost and operated with impunity. I dunno, I wanted more from both of them. The bumbling FBI agents were also

http://m.mlb.com/vid...omes-cannot-see That was from yesterday. It was Brock "Steve" Holt's first game in center field in his life, and he'd never played any outfield, even in the minors, until last week. That play was actually his first career chance as a center fielder.

Yeah. It may not have been entirely accurate regarding his character (which was his issue with it) but I thought it was interesting and well written.

I'm with you, I thought it was great, not just good. A few things though: I think Sorkin added a lot that wasn't in the book. (Also you called the book a novel, which I'm sure was just a grammatical mistake, but I still feel like somebody should point out that it's non-fiction.) The whole relationship with Pitt and his daughter was beautifully done, and I don't think that was in the book at all beyond maybe a mention that Billy Beane had a daughter and an ex-wife. Jonah Hill was an amalgamation of a bunch of different characters in the book, which isn't always succesful. I think all t

Yeah don't read it if you haven't read the books.

I know you're joking but it's sad because he was an idol to a lot of people. I never really saw him play in his prime because he was on the Padres, there was no interleague play, and the Padres were rarely in the playoffs. I also didn't have cable, to see him on TBS against the Braves. But I was really into baseball cards and stat sheets and everything and I remember poring over the stats on his cards and saving up my allowance to buy his rookie card form a local card shop (who put it on hold for me when I promised them I would buy it). The fact that I almost never got to see him play also

Frau already answered this but yes, it totally holds up. Sorkin (and Rob Lowe) left the show after season 4 and people generally agree that the show dipped in quality after that. I actually think it got back on track for awhile though and there are some pretty excellent episodes scattered through the final 3 seasons. But the first 4 seasons are thoroughly outstanding, with only a couple lesser episodes sprinkled here and there.

Great finale, they really did fit everything in and it didn't seem too rushed. Also loved the Hound/Brienne battle which obviously wasn't in the books. Pretty big spoiler: I felt this season kind of slacked a bit compared to previous seasons but the last 3 episodes were great. I haven't gotten to the Children of the Forest in the books or whatever that shit was with Bran, so that was pretty weird and badass. I did slog through book 4, and I'm glad you guys warned me that it sucked so I just listened to it on audiobook while doing other stuff like commuting and doing chores.

Seriously. If you like all his other stuff (I agree Sports Night was meh), even Studio 60, you'd love The West Wing, especially since you also mentioned American President which was kind of its predecessor. It's hard to compare a 90 minute movie to a 150-hour tv series, but it's easily his best tv work.
