  1. I'm not extrapolating. I'm pointing out that the last few years confirm that the several century long warming trend is greatly accelerating, as predicted by climate models. And by the way, the "medieval warming period was warmer" is a myth. http://www.skeptical...warm-period.htm However, the models are likely to be wrong in some ways. They actually seem to have underestimated how sensitive the earth is to warming. They did not predict all of these extreme climate events this early. The models have also been wildly wrong about arctic ice melt. The Arctic is melting 100 years ahead o
  2. Lol. I like how you conveniently forget to mention that the Arctic ice got completely annihilated this year and that Antarctica is far less important than the Arctic when assessing the impact of Global warming. http://www.skeptical...gaining-ice.htm You also forgot to mention that we've had record heat waves, droughts and flooding in the last few years and it seems that scientists have actually underestimated how sensitive the planet is to warming.
  3. He can't elevate the tone because the Republican strategy is to screw over most of the country and use the same policies that have been recently discredited by the invisible man. Neocons are intellectually bankrupt, but are at least smart enough(usually- see Romneys 47% comments) to realize that they can no longer tell the truth about what it is that they plan to do. Obama isn't much better. His job is to be the "good cop" that gives decent speeches, but when it comes time for legislation goes along with the Republican plan 90% of the time. There is no debate to be had. Everything has alre
  4. The obvious point is that Neocons have gotten so extreme that Reagan would now be seen as a bleeding heart liberal.
  5. These Republican sociopaths would be more entertaining if they didnt consistently fool idiots into voting for them. Still, you have to laugh at Romney basically calling his base worthless leeches. Most of the states who have the highest percent of residents not paying the only tax Neocons seem to think exist are red states. On a related note, it truly is amazing how often Neocons can get away with the "half pay no taxes" lie. I guess if people really, really want to believe something then the facts will never get in the way. I predicted a while ago that the Republicans didn't want to a
  6. It's not him being a sissy. This court led by Roberts is more in the tank for corporate interests than any court ever. The corporations really wanted the individual mandate to stay. They could have been screwed if it got overturned. As for overturning it, I would have been in favor of that. While this law isn't even remotely as bad as fanatical neocons pretend it is, it does only solve maybe 10% of the health care problem. You are right that it probably will make it more difficult to solve the remaining 90%.Of course this depends on if you have any faith whatsoever in the American political sys
  7. From an overall economic perspective you can combine individual and corporate taxes if you want. Overall government revenues(taxes) are also at historic lows. The US tax burden is far lower than in most other countries with similar levels of wealth. The problem in the US isn't even remotely that taxes are too high. The basic problem is that we spend more than we take in through taxes and massively waste spending on military and inefficient health care programs.
  8. Lol. Looks like a good time for a reminder that corporate taxes as a percent of GDP are at historic lows.
  9. 99% of the time your fate is sealed before you go to tribal. Tribal councils are basically just there for entertainment.
  10. There is none. The price of gold is completely irrational. Basically you are trying to read mind's of other people to figure out exactly how irrational they actually are. Good luck.
  11. 1.There is no way the ACA survives the mandate being struck down. The insurance industry will move hell and high water to kill it at that point even if the supreme court does not. 2.That's possible. I think this is a pretty risky strategy for Republicans/insurance industry though. The ACA gave them most of what they wanted- no single payer and a mandate. If they kill it then there is a much higher risk that we move to a system that the entire civilized world uses(and would be terrible for the greedy health care industry). You'd think that the general public would eventually realize that they a
  12. Yea, you are right. It was just a quick estimate I did.Fixed the numbers so I don't get accused of lying.
  13. You have to be joking about this, but I guess I just don't get Christian humor since this seems like a pretty lame joke. Just in case you aren't - The formula for volume is (4/3)πR^3. Plug in 71(at the low end of the size estimate) and you get 360,000. The midrange is 710,000. You may hazily recall from high school physics that Force=Mass x Acceleration, not Radius x Acceleration.
  14. This asteroid isn't much bigger than the one that caused the Tunguska event. It would take something thousands of times bigger to remotely threaten civilization. By comparison, the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs was about 700,000 times bigger(mid-range of estimated diameter of 10-15 km)It would probably have a very low fatality rate assuming we could guess its strike zone a couple days in advance. As for Atheist conversion, why would you think that an entirely logically explainable event would convert anyone? It seems likely that it would take something that had the appearance of a miracle
  15. You reap what you sow*. Breitbart made a career of spreading hatred and lies. He was the definition of classlessness. To mendaciously pretend that people should actually respect such a vile person is just more Neocon pearl-clutching as theydesperately attempt to avoid discussing issues based on actual facts. * Another part of the bible that is clearly not meant to be taken literally, as judged by the actions of modern Christians.
  16. Breitbart was a "villain, a duplicitous bastard, a prick and a special pile of human excrement."I don't believe in karma, but there is a sort of poetic justice about his own words being able to be returned back to him so soon. And no, I don't believe you are obligated to lie about someone when they die. Breitbart was a hateful scumbag, living or dead.
  17. A few more semi-random thoughts on the issue.-It's not a matter of singling out one religion, but focusing on the unacceptable abuses that any belief system, religious or otherwise, might commit. Islam tends to have more abuses than most popular belief systems. -Obviously much of the bible is not morally superior to the Koran, but there are two caveats. As VB said, the New Testament gives Christians an excuse to ignore the Old Testament. Also, the separation of church/state that is much more accepted in Christianity allows for compartmentalization that limits the damage from extreme religious
  18. So you're saying that corporations are not people? Well I guess we can agree on that.
  19. There are degrees of evil, but due to Islam's irredeemable incompatibility with modern civilization and values I think you would be justified in calling it evil. A primary problem is that most Muslims do not believe in separation of church/state. Their ideal government is a religious tyranny that treats non-believers(and women) as permanent second class citizens. There are Muslims that have argued against this, but they seem to be very much a minority. A second major problem is the extreme hostility to opposing or moderate views. Trying to kill or violently suppress "unbelievers" is absolutely
  20. I think support for Muslims on the left is a lot lower than you think. Islam is evil and should be systematically opposed, but arbitrarily slaughtering and torturing Muslims is an extremely stupid and immoral way to go about it. Speaking of fascinating, here's a fun supreme court case coming up- http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/25/opinion/...le-do.html?_r=1Just kidding. There's no suspense here since we all know the $C will rule that corporate "people" have the right to kill and torture with impunity. After all, some people are a hell of a lot more equal than others.
  21. I made a post about the end of the constitution a few years ago. Looks like things are even worse than I thought. At least when Bush was president a lot of liberals opposed his fascist unconstitutional policies. But now that Obama has done the same thing a significant portion of those opposed went along with it. As I've stated before, there is officially no longer a such thing as a constitution or human right in the US. The government can secretly kill, imprison or torture you for any reason. They don't even have to give an explanation after the fact. The surprising thing is that so few people
  22. First, this is hardly a "great stride".Second, I'm sure liberals are overwhelmingly opposed to implementing sharia law so I don't know what your point is.
  23. You are completely wrong about this, but since you are irrational you will continue to ignore all of the clear evidence. See post #474 and lots of other posts I've made.http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...p;#entry3495620
  24. There are far too many verses people disagree about to bother to list. It's a little amazing that you would even bother to dispute this point, but it is pretty damaging to the Christian view so I guess you have to put up some sort of token disagreement. Here are a few that seem to directly refute the modern christian/neocon worldview. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;Sell your possessions and give to charity; make yourselves purses which do not wear out, an unfailing
