  1. Online Single Table Tourney, pays 3 places. 4 players left, Blinds 300/600, not going up soonSmall Blind (me) 1,600 TC (after blind)Big Blind 10,000UTG 1,630Button 5,500UTG has built his stack from about 500 through a series of all ins that he won without showdown and then tightened up a little.Big blind has been pretty conservative, calling a lot but not bullying or chasing with weak hands.I've been folding every hand watching other short stacks bust out on their all-ins, and it should be obvious to UTG that I'm not playing anyt
  2. No. Even on a simplistic level your odds against hitting the straight by the river are only about 5/1, so if you know you'll get a free card to see the river (if you miss the turn), those are the approximate odds you would be looking for.A true implied odds calculation is much more complex. You need to look at the streets separately (eg if you hit on the turn what is the bet and the potential payoff, if you dont hit on the turn whats his bet and will you have odds to call that bet. You also have to take into account that he may not call the all-in bet by weighting down the payoff. You als
  3. when you loosen up, and the hands you add, depends on position and number of players (assuming they all have the super-tight image of you).An occasional raise with a middle pair from any position should help, unless there are aggressive players that will re-raise often. Limping with suited connectors early, or raising them late, will also help your image a bit.The first thing that should happen is your hourly rate will go up just from stealing pots. Once youve showed down a few of these looser calls then you are going to get calls on your better hands. You need to vary your play once you ve be
  4. This is self-contradictory. They don't come into play less, they come into play whenever the "good player....takes away your odds to call". You arent calling precisely because you are taking into account pot odds.As far as implied odds go, I haven't read a thread here or on 2+2 that actually discusses the right way to calculate them, and I doubt many top players even know how. They have a feel for what they can win on the river if they dont catch on the turn, but don't really know the implied odds.
  5. A nice supplement maybe, but a complete living? Awfully hard grind. If you can find enough $100 STTs and turn an earn rate of about $40 per tourney (a reachable goal if you're really good), and you need to earn 60k a year, thats 1500 tournaments or about 8 a day if you are going to take reasonable vacations and stay fresh. Its a grind for sure.
  6. The likelihood is that you probably have enough "common sense" to know a really bad call without calculating pot odds. In situations where the pot odds are close but insufficient the "cost" of a bad call is correspondingly small, even if implied odds arent there to justify taking a card off.If you are in the territory of calling when you seriously have the worst of it consistently, you will lose more or win less than you could have. If they make worse calls than you, you may still win, but it will be pocket change instead of folding cash.As far as the winning streak goes, you were just lucky
  7. this is hand that needs a perfect flop to play on without risking a big loss on a draw.
  8. before I look at the rest of the answers, I think this is an easy fold, and you give the reason why. The big stack would not be so aggressive with anything less than a premium hand. I would put him on nothing worse than Js and more likely As, Ks, Qs (unlikely with yours) or AK, AQ (again less likely and probably not strong enough anyway).you cant count on the small stack to duplicate any of his power cards, so you at best in a crap shoot with the big stack and possibly a 2/1 underdog. I play sng's to get in the money, not necessarily win. You earn a nice return on investment if you avoid com
  9. There is no reason to read the first Sklansky holdem book if you have Advanced Players. If you are going to play limit under 5/10, the low limit book is more important. If you are going to play limit above 15/30, advanced players is more important. If you are going to play limit between 5/10 and 15/30,( or if you really want to think and learn,) you should read both and understand the reasons for the differences. You can get all kinds of tables in those mid-limits and you have to be able to adjust accordingly.
  10. Heads up or 3 handed AK is not really a drawing hand, it will win unimproved quite often, especially if you drive one out of the hand with a big raise. All in pre flop is clearly the best if your objective is to get the small stack out, which I agree is your priority.
  11. Auto checking can also have the opposite (and still beneficial effect) from the cutoff or two off the button with a drawing hand, especially if there has been internet lag. A less patient button or cutoff might also auto-check/fold expecting someone to raise in between, and your acting instantly after the others doesnt give him time to reconsider betting with a marginal hand when the table has shown weakness.
  12. I havent read the Tournament Poker book, but my vague recollection is you are only half right about what DS says. Yes, being all in is an advantage because you see all 5 cards whereas you might fold prematurely if you try to play the hand normally. I don't think he disagrees with the notion that there is a point (not 10x, somewhere lower) where you will be forced to loosen your calling/raising standards considerably out of desperation.
  13. When I'm down to a short stack (5-6 x BB) if the table is tight and I'm likely to steal the blinds then I prefer any suited connectors and higher unsuited connectors over Axo. At a looser table where I might get called by a low pair or A/anything I prefer A/paint or 20's.
  14. for determining the dealer for the first hand (if two A's dealt, the higher suited A is the dealer). I dont know of any game where showdown rankings are based on suit though...and I dont think he was kidding.
  15. knowledge of these "tells" is so common that they are basically worthless. Any decent online player will vary his bet speed (which is often hard to distinguish from internet speeds anyway) and auto-raises/checks/calls for deceptive purposes.
  16. Maybe in bridge, but not in poker. But, as pointed out, you cant have two straight flushes (or two flushes of any rank) in different suits in hold 'em.In games where it is possible (stud, draw) suit has nothing to do with it..a Royal in spades splits with a Royal in clubs.
  17. they level the playing field...skill becomes much less importantthey free up the casino's table for more profitable ring games. The biggest mistake I see is loosening up too much in a fast rising limit rebuy tournament. You should be thrilled to see people rebuying 2, 3 or 4 times, going all in with weak holdings trying to "build a stack early". Just dont be the one doing it.You can loosen up somewhat in response to their looser play, but not to that extent. You are bound to run into a real hand and get caught in rebuy mode yourself.
  18. is a payoff of 300-1 or more on any bet, and the withholding amount is 20% of the total payout. Punters know this well, because there is witholding on exotics that exceed 300-1.I would guess that in a tournament the buy in is considered a single bet, so a first place that pays 300 times the buy in or more should be withheld on.That raises the question of the taxes when you are sponsored or you sell off pieces of yourself. Techically you would responsible for the entire tax unless you have a written contract for the sponsorship/sale.
  19. Ouch. I have seen this "reason" as justification for different plays, and it couldnt be more wrong. Since, as the original post points out, a raise may very well limit the field, a substantial part of the pot that gives you "odds to call" on a later street is your own money, which is a fallacy that should be obvious.
  20. I don't feel at all desperate at 10x the bb, unless the blinds are due to go up in the next circuit. 6x the bb with no antes and 5x the bb with antes are auto all ins, but more than that I think I can get more out of most hands playing normally. The exceptions would be AA, KK, QQ where I will represent desperation with an all in, not AK, since small pairs will call an apparent desperation play.
  21. formatted DVD that would highlight the key hands if you dont want to slog through the rest.
