What Books Are You Guys Reading?
dapokerbum replied to LadyGrey's topic in Entertainment: Television, Movies & Music
I never got around to reading that. I think I tried at some point and became bored with it.Just started "The Last Season" by Eric Blehm. About a backcountry ranger who goes missing. Tells his life story and parallels the search effort. About 150 pages in and hooked. I'm about to do a 6 day backpacking trip and I'm not sure if this is a good read before hand or a bad read. On the good side is that it is really fascinating how much this guy loved the backcountry ... on the other hand, if he can get lost out there and not found ... then ... yeah. -
Played over the weekend and shot a +1. Solid round for me. Had a great birdie from 40 ft.

Yes, I was the one talking about personal responsibility. It seems to me that sometimes the only way to dangle any kind of carrot is with money. People respond to money moreso than anything else. However, if we did a study and it was shown that these small incentives would not work then I am out on the idea. I do agree with Jeep that there are better more important steps that we need to take in regards to the health of the nation rather than focus on a "sin tax". -

Actually if the poor would maintain a healthy lifestyle then they would get tax incentives ...I really believe that people would make healthier choices if given an incentive. Is that a bad thing? I want a healthy nation, this isn't a talking point, it is what I would like to see. If someone genuinely wants to be a fat ass then cool, that is their choice, but I think most people want to be healthy, because as I said before there are so many fad diets that come out every week and people are all over them ... like white on rice. So why not make healthy food incentivized? I try to eat healthy -

But they do like incentives ... which is what we would be giving them. -

It is my belief that most fat people don't want to be fat. You can see this in the way that dieting is such a huge fad amongst the populace. So if we find a way to disincentivize people from unhealthy food and incentivize them with healthy food then we are killing two birds with one stone. As cane said we are not outlawing junk food or anything we are merely trying to make it so it is easier and better to get healthy food. I personally don't care if someone wants to eat cake every meal and be a fat ass, just don't expect me to pony up the dough (hehe get it cause cake is made from dough .. -

I'm not realy sure it's more control per se, we are just looking for a solution that encourages people to be healthy. Is that so wrong? Can you honeslty look around at any given place and see all the fat people out there, kids included, and just shrug your shoulders and say oh well at least we have our free choices available. I can't and it makes me sick to my stomach knowing that if these people could just take some time and eat a balanced meal and exercise a little they could walk from their car to the store without losing their breath. I'm not saying that government should completely st -

Well we've tried that and it seems that all we have is an obesity and diabetes problem. I would love for people to be able to do whatever they want to do, as long as they agree to take personal responsibility for those choices. The problem is we want the cake and we want to eat it too (damn fatties) so the only way to encourage or discourage people against anything seems to be a tax. If you want to smoke, you pay huge taxes. What's 5 cents extra for a coke? The problem as I see it is this new money won't be used for it's intended purpose and with any tax it will just keep getting more and -

I'm serious about setting up a commission to test if this would be a viable method. If the governemnt could just fork over 100M or so I could get the case study started ... -

I actually like bean curd better than tofu. Tofu has always sounded gross, while bean curd almost sounds appetizing. I admit the reasons behind this are because I love cheese curds ... so there's that.I agree to an extent that we could start taxing certain foods, but it is where there would be a grey area that i would have problems. Let's take the fast food world. Would we have to tax all cheeseburgers ... or would we only have to tax double cheese burgers. Would a hamburger then not be taxed, or do we just tax anything from a fast food restaurant. Or do we just take it by calorie conten -

Me too. Personally I think they should tax the fatties and then give back so that people can afford to shop at Whole Foods. Geez, that place is expensive. But one of the only ways to get peoples undivided attention is to tell them it will cost them more money to be fat. -

In that scenario would those who are being the most healthy deserve a tax break? So would brown rice, wheat bread, flax seed, fruits and vegetables have tax incentives? -

But should there be a law banning judges from weighing in on these types of cases? If he should have recused himself then maybe we need to make it clear by making it law? -

WOW ... WTF:Justice Clarence Thomas worked as an attorney for Monsanto in the 1970s. Thomas wrote the majority opinion in the 2001 Supreme Court decision J. E. M. Ag Supply, Inc. v. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.|J. E. M. AG SUPPLY, INC. V. PIONEER HI-BREDINTERNATIONAL, INC.[103] which found that "newly developed plant breeds are patentable under the general utility patent laws of the United States." This case benefitted all companies which profit from genetically modified crops, of which Monsanto is one of the largest. In order for the FDA to determine if Monsanto's growth hormones were s -

Even watching Food, Inc. That soy bean company that did the GMO, Monsanto, they sued a small farmer and won because the trucks using the GMO seeds drove by the non GMO fields and through germination or whatever, the non GMO field turned out the GMO seeds and so this small farmer got sued. It seems that it should have been the other way around where the non GMO farmer would have sued the GMO seed guy for contaminationg his fields.*Not real sure all the legalese that happened in this case, I just saw the one side which was portrayed in the movie Food, inc ... so maybe there is more to the stor -

I'm lazy, can you post a link?I'm sure there are mechanisms in place and I'm sure these mechanisms cost time and money to put in place. Most times people are just going to be stoked that the suit is over with and leave it at that. There should be more that can be done. Do you agree with "frivolous" lawsuits? Do you think that every case has merit?EDIT: Also, I do apportion the blame. The dude that sued is about as equal to blame as the lawyer involved. I do however think that the lawyers who represent these sort of claims are almose like poker players where they are just trying to push -

Cane, this is why people hate lawyers. Now we can argue all day on whether or not lawyers serve any good purpose (i think they have a place), but to what extent are lawyers really needed. I think we need to get rid of all these frivoulous lawsuits. I work in transportation and someone wanted to sue us because an apple fell on their knee!! Are you kidding! A frickin apple. But because they got "hurt" phyically and EMOTIONALLY they tried to sue us. We won of course, but not before we had to spend $20K+ in legal fees. It's not right. And we can't do anything to sue the guy for anything b
