I need help playing tournaments in this league (www.inhousepokerleague.com) at local bars in my area. Play is pretty poor for the most part (loose passive). I've been playing pretty tight and depending on my post flop play to win chips. I've made the final table several times but I'm usually pretty short stacked. After the break, the blinds take a big jump (in an already fast structure). I usually find myself getting blinded away while waiting for something good to push with.So lately I've been trying to play more aggresively to accumulate more chips and I'm failing miserably. I can't tell if it's just impossible to make a move on these guys or if I'm just not doing a good job of picking my times and targets. It just seems that every time I make a move, I get called with anything and it turns into a luck fest. So, my questions are:1) Does anyone have any general tips on playing against loose passive in a fast structure?2) Does anyone have any advice for stealing, pushing, making moves against loose passive? Thanks guys. I appreciate any help I can get.

Asia, does your rakeback stack with the VFP program?

I'm not trying to pass myself off as an expert. But as someone who predominantly plays NL, my observation is that the focus in cash games and tournaments is different. In cash games, the idea is to win the most money. It doesn't end your day if you bust out because if it's a good game, you can rebuy and keep shooting. However, in tournaments the goal is to survive. Obviously there are similarities, but this difference affects the way I approach certain situations. For example, I agree with some posters about blind stealing. For me, in cash games blind stealing is about worthless. Sure, someone's going to steal a dime or quarter from me once in a while. But I don't really care because when I trap them with the best hand, they're going to double me up. Also, it seems silly to risk 1-2$ to win 25 cents. The payoff isn't the blinds. It's the double up with the monster hand. However, in a tournament well timed stealing can be vital to accumulating chips. And you want to defend your blinds sometimes so that you don't keep getting picked on.I stick to mainly nl cash games and tournaments, myself. I've asked a very similar question before and never really got any replys to it. My main question is this. How should you vary your strategy from nl cash games to tournaments? I know tournaments are a different animal altogether but I'm not sure which parts of my tournament game to alter while playing cash games. -
LOL TFABOM, you misread my post. I wasn't labeling this thread as gay. I was referring to the people that did and voicing my disapproval. Re-read my post in that context and with the posts I quoted.BTW, I'm not sure how anyone *looks* bisexual, like someone looks Asian.
Yes, I agree it's painfully obvious that there's a horde of young meatheads on here.Using "gay" as an insult is pretty immature. Grow up.I wasn't "accusing" DN of being gay. Are you a censored homophobe? Go back to ogling Shana Hiatt. I was stating that DN "looks" bi-sexual, like John Juanda "looks" Asian. My comment might have been stupid, but you're the meathead here.Although this is my favorite forum, it's sometimes painfully obvious that it's dominated by younger guys. They can't have a thread about female players with it devoloving into a discussion about their looks. Yet *this* thread is gay and needs to be hijacked. And the worst insult imaginable is to accuse a guy of being gay.Sometimes amusing, but mostly tiresome. -

Post Of The Day!Not to be mean to DN but that was damn funny.Um, he looks bi-sexual? -
Nah, you would have crushed him if it went to fisticuffs.BTW, my wife likes your 'do. She has a similar one and I think it looks great on both of you!It happened like Card Player said it did.George raised one from the button. I was in the big blind with A-T and moved in. We were heads up. He asked me how many chips I had. I counted it down and had 142, 000. He then counted his chips and thought for about 30 seconds more and then called. To say the least I was a little shocked to see Aces. I was a little ticked off but figured I would be in big trouble if I asked him to go outside. lolJennifer Harman -
Thanks for the feedback guys. The blinds were indeed .10/.25 and a standard raise for premium hand was between $1 - $2. I can accept that I was unlucky. I just wanted some fresh eyes to look and see if I made an obvious mistake that was going to cost me in the future. Thanks again.

Hey, guru's. Please tell me how I could have seen this coming.Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ Sendachi (6 max, 6 handed) converterMP ($102.97)CO ($54.6)Button ($19.4)SB ($22.4)Sendachi ($18)UTG ($24.25)Preflop: Sendachi is BB with [Kd], [Kh]. SB posts a blind of $0.1. 1 fold, MP calls $2, SB calls $2.Flop: ($9) [8s], [Jc], [3s] (3 players)SB checks, Sendachi bets $5, MP calls $5, SB calls $5.Turn: ($24) [Ks] (3 players)River: ($24) [6c] (3 players)Final Pot: $24Results in white below: SB doesn't show. Sendachi has Kd Kh (three of a kind, kings). MP has Js Ts (flush, king high). Outcome: MP wins $24. For some reason this converted hand isn't showing that I went all in on turn for $10, but that's what I did. I don't know if I'm in denial, but in rethinking it I don't see how I put him on this hand.Do I just always fold top set with flush on board? Do I check/fold? These don't seem like good options. I think I was just unlucky to run against a big stack who felt like gambling on flop, but any insight would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I don't get how this hyperaggressive thing works. If he hadn't hit the heart on the river he was out a lot of chips, wasn't he? Don't you have to hit on this kind of thing fairly often to make it work?Damn your table sucked. the five high flush draw is what Oppenheim does from all of the stories that I've heard of him. As you experienced he is hyperaggressive and makes life difficult for people. That's cool though that you played and you did pretty well, it sucks busting out on the first dya, but then again how many of us were there with you, exactly. I've heard that TJ has some wild stories from his road days so I bet you heard a couple of them -
Bump....I know it might seem that I'm fishing. But I'm down on the night and wondering if there's any obvious problem from these stats. Thanks again.

Hey Guys,I don't have PokerTracker yet (still trying to figure out demo version). In the meantime, I was looking at my PartyPoker stats for the day and wondered if anyone had any feedback for me. I've been playing mostly $25 NL. The tables I've played tended to be loose passive.Hands played: 868Hands Won: 10%Showdowns Won: 73%Flops seen: 32%Win% if Flops Seen: 28%I know this isn't a lot of info. But can anyone see any obvious problems from these stats? For example, I like my showdowns won % but wonder if I'm seeing too many flops. Since I can usually limp, though, maybe this is OK.Any help from the gurus?

Sorry to butt-in-ski...I downloaded PokerTracker and have been trying to use it. Is there a primer out there somewhere? Also, I'm trying to use Gametime+ but I already had 1k hands when I installed. So I can't get it to work live on tables to see what it looks like. Is there a way to clear out the database?I know there's a bunch of documentation and I'm willing to read through it. Just wondered if anyone could give me some help to speed up the learning curve. Thanks!

Yep, everyone knows girls are incapable of playing good poker and that guys never play Ace-rag.Good post Farrell.Females treat Ace-rag much stronger than males do.I swear to God. Pay attention. The female players will call to the end simply trying to spike their Ace with a 3 kicker. It's really fun when you're dealt KK, bet it through, and get beaten on the river like that. Just my opinion...never underestimate your female opponent's probability of playing Ace-rag. -
Ah, if only that were true. :)I only play NL and I've been called down with worse than that. Many times...... NL - he would have been booted out of that hand long before the turn hit. -

I hear what you're saying Phish and I agree that some people are coming off a little strong. But I think what people (like myself) are having trouble with is that you don't seem to have hit a run of bad cards or bad luck yet. Tight-aggressive is how I play and it *can* yield some great results against loose players. *But* you can be doing everything right and still have a losing session, which is something you don't seem to have experienced. For example, you get dealt AA in the BB and UTG goes all in for $20 dollars. It gets folded around to you. If you call, you're probably a favorite. But AA does get cracked. So do you fold it because you don't have the nuts? If you're waiting til you have the nuts and then making huge bets, people will get wise and start folding. If you call an all in when you have AA, at some point you're going to have a losing session.I like to put my money in when I have the best of it. That doesn't mean I'm always going to win. In the long run I should, but I'm also going to have some down sessions because of luck. It seems that you're saying that good play makes you impervious to luck in every session and people that have been playing for a while know that's simply not true.Anyhow, I'm not trying to add to the snarkiness and I hope my post didn't read that way. Just trying to explain why people (myself included) don't think your good run is sustainable.....Tight aggressive play will yield nice pay offs at the end of a good solid hand........The range of answers seem to be either I am lying, am extremely lucky, ..... -
OK thanks. I'll check out the Miller book.

Out of curiosity, do you have an opinion on the Lee Jones low limit holdem book?
-
Smash,Sorry if this has been covered before, but have you posted guidelines about your low limit playstyle? Pre-flop hand selection, post flop play, etc.?I enjoy reading through the hands as a NL player trying to get back into limit. I was just wondering if there was a synopsis somewhere that I could look at.Thanks!
-
As long as you're here Smash, tell me....Have you ever had a nasty drought where you could just do nothing right? Does that happen? Or is it possible there's a nasty leak in my play and the winning I've done to date was lucky? And what is your thought on NL profitability vs limit?

Fewer hands per hour, dealer and waitperson tips, little table selection, no multi-tabling.I'm not crapping on it, this has just been my perception of onland vs online.I appreciate the suggestion and I'm not arguing it. But flesh this out for me. How would playing onland improve the experience for me?Free drinks mostly. -
I appreciate the suggestion and I'm not arguing it. But flesh this out for me. How would playing onland improve the experience for me?I'm not sure where you live. But, if you do live near a casino, I would suggest playing there instead. I personally can't stand playing online anymore. Unfortunately, not everyone lives in a city where they have live poker. But I would venture to say that, playing live would be the best altarnative. I don't want to go into too much detail, but if you can, I would certainly tell you to play live whenever possible. Good Luck. -
Just so you know, watching that show with one free hand doesn't count as dating the girls on it.Thanks for the model reference, i dated the girl that came in 2nd in America's Next Top Model in the 2nd season, pretty good for a fry boy eh -
Seems as viable as believing that women were created from the rib of a man or that the world rests on the back of a giant tortoise or any other mythology. But I don't think anyone has yet said they believe in nothing. I tend towards agnostic myself. I'll tell you, though, my objection isn't that people have a particular belief system (even if it doesn't make sense to me). It's when they ram it down your throat and use it to judge and intimidate people. If you could silently use it as a guide for your own life, that would be great. But quit telling everyone else how to live. You may say you haven't told anyone how to live their life and that may be true in this thread. But I also know that Catholics are intrinsically incapable of not telling other people how they're living wrong. To believe in nothing and that we just somehow ended up here is ridiculously naive and sad.

</lurk>This is a sincere question from a NLHE player/PLO8 noob:Why are so many people talking about wanting to isolate with this hand? The hand is so marginal that it seems like our best chance is to hit a bunch of hearts (if we're going to play it at all). Wouldn't we want more people and a bigger pot if that happens? Thanks for any help on this.(I also don't understand trying to isolate on a $2 table, but I'll leave that one alone for now.)
