I've read some of your blog posts microroller, although they are a bit long winded and cover too many details to always maintain my interest. I still think it's hard for you to analyze Daniel's play since you are biased by results, as hard as you may try not to be. When you see him shove and lose with TT vs KK, it's easy to say "well obviously villain had a big hand". Cmon, this is Daniels we're talking about here. Regardless, I wonder if Daniel has been recording these sessions and commenting on them at pokervt. This minraise strategy of his, even UTG is rather interesting now that I think I know what he's doing. I once heard daniel comment on the micro stakes saying "people are calling or raising or folding regardless of your bet." So in a way, he's getting massive amounts of information for very cheap. I mean, the only reason to raise KK 4BB's UTG is because you expect worse hands to call. But it's doubtful worse hands will continue past the flop, except with the very worst of players. So lets say you raise 2BB's with KK, well if 2 people call, they were probably calling whether you made it 2 or 5 BB's. But with a small pot, you are likely to get the same EV, since they may be more inclined to call a flop bet, where as before they might just fold to your cbet. They see a turn card now, but that cant be too bad, and helps keep the pot within your control on particularly draw heavy flops. If someone flops a OESD or flush draw combo after calling a big preflop raise, they may just shove over any cbet looking to get their money in and gamble, perhaps even as a slight favorite. But if the pot is their stack to pot ratio is too large on the flop because you made a much smaller raise, shoving wouldnt make any sense. Instead they call, you continue to give them the same bad odds to chase their draw, but you dont lose control of the hand from an unexpected push. Furthermore, if you hold a hand like AK and get 3bet preflop after making it 4BB's, you are virtually committed to the hand regardless of board texture should you call, because you would have already invested 15-20BB's on your hand. This leaves room for almost zero postflop play. If this is Daniel's strategy I'm starting to think it's rather brilliant, although it requires significant hand reading abilities, something daniel is renowned for.

Daniel updates the very first post in this thread with results. Just scroll to the bottom of his 1st post to see where he's at.. Looks like he's just using the stars internal hand counter. Daniel doesnt use HUD's or tracking software so it's all manual for him.are you using a spread sheet for this....if so can you post it -
Playing LAG comes down to one thing, hand reading. Daniel is known for his hand reading abilities, and most skilled players could play a pretty LAG game at micro stakes if they wanted. Most tend to advise that you play tight and just let the fish pay you off when you finally hit, but this requires time and patience. If you can continue to outplay your opponents then you might as well take every edge you've got. You dont have to wait for AK if you know A9 will do. Daniel can simply get in there and play a lot more hands because he wont make as many mistakes as someone else would. If you read Daniel's rules for this challenge, part of it requires that he never risk too great a percentage of his bankroll at any given time. Remember, he's playing with 5 buyins. So the last thing he wants to do is get allin vs someone and lose not just 1 buyin, but lose 2 in a single hand. The only reason to have a full stack at the table is so you cover anyone whom you have an edge on. If some fish maniac keeps going allin with rags every hand, well you want to have as much money as he does sitting in front of you, so you can win his whole stack! If you were playing Daniel would you want to have a full stack? I know I wouldnt. You will often see players at higher limits not buyin for the max, because it's unlikely they will be winning a large majority of the time in an allin situation. Daniel has an edge on all the players sure, but suckouts and coolers do happen from time to time, so he needs to be able to bounce back without it crippling him.

Daniel, what bankroll strategy would you use if you were to play heads up cash instead of ring games as your 100k challenge?

Just wondering if Daniel has updated pokervt to show how to beat 1/2cent and above?

Funny how fishes always remember the 1 time they win with a hand like this, and forget about the 1000 times they lose.i havent played at any tables latly but i will soon, but when i play i tend to play omaha n nolimit tables, 0.05/0.10 tables once i double up at some tables i stay to double up the recently doubled up cash, n leave. but when i leave the tables and go to ther tables i get suked out having aces or in omaha ace-ace-6-5 suited both ways n as it always happens i get suked out by a str8, missing my flushes n lose the pot, but i learned theat i can play 8-9-10-j as a top hand cuz it has potental of suking out the high cards on str8s or 2 pairs, or even flushes i can beat. in no limit i played 0.10/0.25 table n was up a few bucks n went on to .50/1.00 table later on that night n guess what happend, i had the rockets the late guy raised my raise of 5x to 12x n i moved allin, then he showed 2 pair Q-9, i lost 50 bux right there n had a bankroll of 13 again. i learned this the hard way that i cannot move up the stakes unless i got insurance to play once again in that stakes. so guess im gonna stay at 0.05/0.10 tables for a little while more once i get some more ps cash. anyway i heard that daniel had a challange to move up from 10 to 100,00 so i decided to try it too but i got trashed too fast last time but im gonna try again n use my last experiance this time. good luck to yall at the tables.oh i forgot one thing i was gonna post up here, bout 2 years ago i played in a 16 player or so $80 tournament, i was getting some cards at first n folded sometimes, then i jus couldnt fold 7-2 off, so i raised 6x n got called n reraised by the same player to his allin, so i thought n thought why my guts were stoppin me from folding, so i wanted to fold but i couldnt, so i called he had about 70% of my stack n i was left to about 27%-30% at the most so i called, it took me a good 2-3 mins to call, so the community came 5-A-4 which was noo good for me so the dealer turned a 6 the board was a rainbow then the table said only a 3 can beat you now they told the guy, so it came....the miricle 3. i had the chip lead now n ended up in 3rd place. thats one thing ill never forget in my poker lifetime, now i use that hand sometimes at the times my gut calls it. n works 70% of the time. jus like a doyle brunson with his 10-2...j/k. it was amazing for me. worst hand starting hand in poker againest the best starting hand. wow! -
Looks like youre not moving down bud. This is what killed me. The longer you avoid moving down, the faster your bankroll gets crushed. Good job almost hitting NL200 though. Not a good few weeks for me...... -
Exactly. I've been trying to adhere to a 2 BI stoploss to avoid tilt but havent quite gotten there yet.so u tilt easily and can't properly manage your bankroll?? -
I wont deny that these guys are supposed to be gold mines. I mean seriously he calls $10 preflop raise out of position at .50/1.00 with 82o. Hits NOTHING on the flop, no draw, no pair, nothing whatsoever, calls $20 cbet. Hits a DEUCE on the turn, and brings in a flush draw, an EIGHT HIGH flush draw. I bet the turn again, HE INSTANTLY SHOVES. Hits his flush on the river. Remember, he had NO draw on the flop. I'm just dumbfounded like wtf?!? I think I had a set of Jacks in that one. These guys actually are quite beatable, you just have to play tight, and I mean real tight against them. I've stacked them plenty of times before. Problem was because I knew this guy was so stupid I could raise pratically anything against him and know I was ahead. So I kept raising him with A5o, K7s, JTo, 68s, etc etc. These hands are definitely ahead of his range, but they're hit or miss only type of hands. Very hard to play postflop. So I kind of brought it on myself. If I had just stuck to pocket pairs, big broadway cards etc, I'm sure I would have done much better. I just had position on him the whole time, nobody else at the table was interfering, so I kept getting it heads up against him, and I got greedy trying to hammer him every chance I got.I've figured out how to beat those fish that play 80% of their hands, never folding, limp calling anything, calling flops with jack high for no reason whatsoever, and hitting insane suckouts like runner runner trips on the river etc.I move to another table. I can never blow off my stack to them then. Works every time. -
Nice job on making to NL100 so quickly. I actually busted out at this level a month ago having reached $785 total bankroll. I had position on some fish who was playing 80% of his hands, never folding, limp calling anything, calling flops with jack high for no reason whatsoever, and hitting insane suckouts like runner runner trips on the river etc. I tilted off over half my roll just attacking him. By then I was so steamed that when I did move down to NL50, I couldnt hold it together, tilted off some more, dropped to NL25 the next day, and then went on a bad run.Technically I still have $25 left which I've decided to just play NL2 with and grind up doing it oldskoo', mass multi-tabling. So far I'm at $45 now so I guess it's a start. I'm just way too emotional to be able to play on such a limited bankroll and have major tilt issues. 20 buyins minimum is the only way to avoid bankruptcy for me.I wonder if Daniel is still persuing this? It's not linked on FCP home page anymore.Quick update on my progress (editing the post on page 8): -
Hey Daniel, when can we expect to start seeing some of your challenge on pokervt? I'm really interested to see how you play against the penny stakes maniacs.
-
Chances are he is not going to be winning at such a paltry rate as 5BB/100. My guess is he can do it at around 50BB/100.
-
I was looking at his schedule on myspace and it looks like he's just swamped with events right now. He's playing in some live tourney like every single day for the next 3 months lol.Daniel hasn't been playing much I see. I know when I'm running badly I don't feel like playing too. -
woa woa woa, I was reading 2p2 today and think i stumbled across a facet of this challenge I was not aware of. Apparently, daniel will never move down in limits? So for instance, if he has $1000 BR and is playing 1/2, and loses a stack, he will just rebuy for 1/5 of his roll, $160? And if he loses 2 stacks, he buys in for $120? But NEVER drops limits? Hmmm.....

His screename is KidPoker, you can find him easily by using the "find team pokerstars pro" feature, and according to him he usually plays around 11pm PST.

JC Alvarado has a great series on cash game approach, playing a hyper lag style, probably in the neighborhood of 45/35/3. Daniel himself only has a very small portion of cash game play at the high stakes and he does well. Other than that his entire training seminar seems to be tailored directly for tournaments. But lately he has commented that small ball works out great for micro stakes cash game limits so it should be interesting to see when he starts posting these videos.

I am just wondering when Daniel will be posting his 100k challenge sessions to poker vt. I am very interested to see how he, and the small ball strategy work at the penny tables. To date all information suggests waiting for the nuts and betting pot pot shove due to the looseness of it all. But daniel beats it another way and I'm dying to find out.

For the record, this crap happens at ANY limit. I've sat down and watched a 25/50 game on stars with a 30 man waitlist because of one uber fish who kept stacking off with nonsense. He'd suckout like 4 times in a row, then he'd lose half it back, suck out again, lose 70% of it, be short stacked for awhile, suck out again.. etc etc etc.. Playing against fish is very dangerous. Remember, holdem is still GAMBLING. Sure there is a lot more math and statistical play value behind it than other games, but chance is still a huge factor. The best way to avoid these players is to sort your tables by the tightest possible. Thats where the "normal" people play, those who actually understand the game and play the strength of their hands more than the luck of the draw. If your table is 25% VPIP or higher, either leave or just pray to god your AA hold up when it comes time. FYI - I was taking Daniel's challenge and have been playing .50/1 for the last 3 days. I just got so HORRIBLY sucked out on, flopping the nut STRAIGHT and nut FLUSH twice against this guy who would literally call off any two cards preflop and stack off on the flop with anything. Both times he catches runner runner runner full house/quads. Because I didnt drop limits soon enough it decimated my roll. I then dropped to .25/.50 and AGAIN got HORRRRRRRRIBLY bad beated to death. I'm now allllll the way back to where I started, playing .10/.25 again. Thats the problem with this 5 buyin strategy. YOu have to drop soooo far down in limits to just a few suckouts. Feels like a big waste of time now, since I could have just kept playing a reasonable limit earlier. Man, $700 down the drain in about 30 minutes playing one table.

Daniel, one of your rules states the following
I just want to make sure I understand; do you mean double your stack at one table? Or do you mean literally doubling up your entire BANKROLL?4. NEW: If I double my bankroll in a session I'll quit on my blind to help avoid risking too high a percentage of my bankroll in any one hand. -
wtg daniel!

Can anyone explain to me Daniel's decision to play FR instead of 6max? Is it to limit the amount of blinds he has to pay playing with such a small bankroll?

The difference between what calls postflop is dependent upon your betsize. Considering daniel is only raising 1BB, he cant assume villain is always going to have TT beat preflop. (I cant remember, did that guy just flat with KK? Or 3bet and daniel called?) Regardless, I think it's safe to say daniel simply put villain on a draw/pair of 9's. Keep in mind, a lot of people are gunning for daniel, and try to make moves against him b/c they saw matt damon do it in rounders. They just want to be the guy that beats him this time, for the glory. So he probably out-levels himself in certain spots wondering if someone is just being a goofball idiot or not. I mean, I see him lose to 62o and other nonsense too. People are NL50 are still WAYYYY bad. Look at all the half stackers and people who arent buying in full. Some guy even minraises daniel right back preflop with what, 95s? Since he only plays like 50-100 hands at a time, thats barely enough time to get any read whatsoever.Anyway, as far as his bankroll goes, what he's doing is possible, although I think he'd be better off at 6max instead of FR. I think fewer players would actually produce less variance for him, rather than relying on hand strength at FR, at least if he's going to be minraising. The thing is, if you are going to play a hand like KK, all you have is one pair. One pair doesnt do so well OOP vs 6 callers. If he did this at 6max, he'd likely only ever get 1-2 callers max. Back in page 12 or something I actually tried this little BR challenge, just the way he does it. I started at NL25, and moved all the way up to NL600 in about a month. Then I cashed out half, moved to NL400 and didnt follow the buyin rule and ultimately lost it all. I have yet to try again, but one day I will. So I certainly think it's possible. The only problem for him right now is the fact that he's still adjusting to these stakes. Daniel hasnt had to play vs these types of players in a long time. Quite honestly, he's probably just not that great at it. I think he'd absolutely destroy NL200+.
