  1. My biggest leak comes from setting goals for myself. Thinking about the end of the current tournament, or how close my bankroll is to the next big round number, leads me to call things I shouldn't call, to raise when I should fold, and so forth.-----"Okay, next class is in 90 minutes, I can 3table until then, I only need to finish up $x and I'll have $y in my account. Sweet.60 minutes later, I'm not up x dollars, I'm down that much, and needing to score. So I pick up pocket Aces UTG, and want to hit the poor suckers unlucky enough to be sitting with me. I violate everything I know about playing Aces, and I raise the minimum.foldfoldfoldfoldcall! a call from the cutoff. foldfold reraise! Sweet! pot-sized reraise from the big blind. Gotcha, pal. Reraise. Pot-sized again. Take that, Variance. That'll learn ya.CO calls. BB calls. 40 big blinds in the pot. Bring on that flop, brother.Flop: JcQcKc.@#$%*$!I'm not beat yet. They'd have to have A 10 to have me, well, or 2 pair anyway, right? Better take this now. Bet the pot.CO raises all-in, about 20% more than my bet. BB calls the raise. I have to call now, my odds on the call are like 23 to 1. I KNOW I'm beaten, but I call.BB puts in the rest of his money after the turn, and I call that too.I show down my aces, CO takes the pot with 9h10h ( how about that for calling a raise and a reraise?) and I at least beat the BBs AK to win the side pot.Now I'm down $2.5x, and I've got a class in 20 minutes.------This is a direct result of my thinking about my next goal instead of thinking about playing good poker. This same thinking causes me to bubble out or finish just barely ITM in tournaments. I'm perfectly healthy as far as chips go, but if I can turn a big score with these Queens, I can just about fold my way to the final table! Raise, 4 callers, flop is 444. Fold to me, I bet half the pot, checkraised all-in. I'm beat. I know good and flyingspaghettimonsterdammed well I'm beat. But I gotta call this, I can freaking triple my chips here! I'll be second in the whole tournament!Call. Lose. Swear. Close window. Swear more. It's a pattern I can't seem to get away from. I do things I shouldn't when I'm playing for the results. How's that for a leak?Mensch

  2. I have found UltimateBet to be the best all-around site, starting with the interface. Simple, straightforward, fast, and reliable. No silly cartoon avatars. The players are better than average, with a sprinkling of rocks and fish. If you want folks calling your preflop 4xbb raise with 5-3 off and turning a 6 high staright to beat your Kings, you won't find it here, except at the micromicrolimits.Holdem, Omaha, O-8, 7stud, 7stud8, Triple Draw lowball, and pineapple. Royal Holdem at the playchip tables. Stakes from $.01 - $.01 to $300-$600 limit Holdem and $.01 - $.02 to $50-$100 No limit. SitnGos from $1 to $5000. Dozens of MTTs every day, starting at $1.50% signup bonus, if you are referred by a friend. (Ooh! me! ME! PICK ME!!!!(UB name: Herr Mensch)) "Player Appreciation Day"s roll around every few months for 50% reload bonuses.Hope to see you there.Mensch

  3. Well,WSOP tables are 9-handed whenever possible, and the final tables officially start that way, though they do pull the last 10 to a single table to play to 9, right? In the original Super/System, DB describes a full tables in NLHE as 9-handed.I guess the proper question is - Why do sites have 10-handed tables? I have zero B&M experience, maybe it's a carryover from that?Mensch

  4. I might like the Gamecocks and you might like the Tigers, and we may have some "in state" rivalry, but i mean who cares? While they are playing their "Rivalry" game that usually decides who makes it to the "Nokia Tire Continental Humanitarian Pity Party Bowl,"
Tou-freakin-che, friend. Gotta remember the name of that bowl. Can't call Clemson/Carolina a rivalry, really, unless you consider hammer/nail to be a rivalry. I grew up in Spartanburg, and I dig South Carolina too. You need to visit the Golden Corner, if you haven't. Absolutely gorgeous over here at the foot of the mountains. in short, no offence intended.Mensch

  7. I sincerely hope that God strikes you dead within 24 hours. If not, I know people at Clemson.
If you actually believe that there is a god, then why get upset at what he did to New Orleans? It must be part of his grand plan, right?
That is such a self centered statement you have no reason to be on this planet
I care far more about myself and my immediate family, and how this storm will affest us than about people that I don't know, whether they're children, elderly, infirm, what have you. Self-centered? Damn straight.
All these people I feel for.
Certainly. So did I, at first. then I got over it. Still sounds like some people around here aren't busy enough.Let me state here that my visceral reaction was a bit overboard. It was a reaction to the ignorance of the OP. Someone mentioned earlier what a devastating effect this will have on the overall U.S. economy. I maintain that the higher gas prices are far more important to me than the suffering of a few hunreds of thousands of strangers. If you don't care about the price of gas, then you must be able to afford not to care. I have to care about the cost of a fill-up. I don't have to care about New Orleans. Unfortunately, we're all going to be force-fed this stuff for months. "Change the Channel?" you say? Okay, I'll just turn the TV off and check some blogs. Katrina benefit tournament, gathering supplies to send down to the Big Easy.... Screw this, I'll go check out FCP. Guess what I found.
How does this effect you? Well, gas is higher than ever, and will continue to rise until it runs out or becomes rationed nationwide. Canada is our biggest crude oil supplier, but since we have no way to refine it to gasoline, we won't need to buy as much, allowing other competing nations, such as China to pick up the surplus and gain that much more of a strategic advantage. You should expect the overall cost of living to go up as a result of the billions of dollars we will end up pumping into the relief effort. The risk of infectious disease will be higher nationwide. The fact that New Orleans will be uninhabitable for at least a year means almost 1,000,000 people wil be displaced to other communities across the US, causing strain on an already streched thin schools, governemtn, hospital, etc. system. We are concentrating our National Guard and military troops in a specific location, increasing our vulnerability to attack, and lessening our defensive structure.
Very good. Thank you. These are the things that we should be concerned about, and the talking heads on Sunday morning news will cover this. This stuff is far more important, to all of us, long term, than the suffering of the residents (former residents, I suppose). But most people would rather mope over sad images than plug into the really ugly stuff that you mentioned.Am I an idiot? Perhaps. But anyone who thinks loss of life is the most important aspect of this storm is a beer stein to my Einstein. There are things far worse than death.Mensch
  8. It’s a little thing called “empathy”.  Quite common in mammals.  Helps do little things like propagate the species and all.
So ... you're heading down to Louisiana ... looking to get laid?kidding.Feel their pain, sure. Be a good person. But all too many people seem to want to go out of their way to 1) Find ways to feel worse and worse about somebody else's problem 2) Chastise me for refusing to cry over spilled milk. Sure, it's the biggest puddle of spilled milk in living memory, but it wasn't my milkAllow me to reiterate - the biggest effect this will have on my life is higher gas prices. Well, that, and not being able to get away from the media's harping on this for the rest of 2005.Mensch
  9. sound like youre a real giving person.so i guess u didnt care about 9/11 either.
Briefly, not very much. It was important while it was happening, it's all we talked about at work that day, and part of the next. But by Thursday and Friday, I for one had moved on. Or tried to anyway. Problem was, nobody around me would let me move on, and I had to hear news reports for the next month "We found six more dead people today". ALL RIGHT ALREADY! WE GET IT!Mensch
  10. was gay? I'm pretty sure the majority is yes.  It's nice to know he was dating hot asians though  :club:
***Real response warning***Absolutely. Frau Mensch swore he was queer as a 3 dollar bill. My 12- year old son remarked that he seemed like "kind of a sweetie". My daughter, age 9, swoons over the guy, she showed his picture to my mother in law, who thought he was one of the "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" crew.In short, yes. Glad to know we were wrong, but, DN seriously needs to man it up a bit. This is what happens when you don't eat meat. You miss out on all that good growth hormone and steroidy stuff they feed the animals, and you wind up at like 5'9", 130 lbs.Mensch
  11. WTF do you think mass  media coverage is for? It's sole purpose is to get the word out to people !
Naive crap.the media's purpose is to survive and prosper. They are an industry, a business, just like everything else. Their overriding concern is profits, not information. They cream all over themselves when something like this happens. They're tickled pink to bring images of suffering to us all, because we line up to swallow their tripe and beg for more.Mensch
  12. Do you people not have enough going on in your own life that you have time enough to spend fretting about what happens to a bunch of people who chose to live in a swamp? On the Gulf coast, no less? Unless this storm has affected you personally, why do you care? Sounds like you're not busy enough. At my Uni, cute little sorority chicks were still selling tsunami bracelets in freakin' MARCH! Now the media and the charities will be holding this over our heads until at least Christmas, screaming "CARE! CARE! CARE! WE ORDER YOU TO GIVE A CRAP!I refuse. Sucks for them, glad it's not me. Beyond that, meh. Get over it. it's not my problem. Don't make it yours. You know what the biggest impact this event is going to have on my life is?Really? You wanna know?Higher gas prices.Mensch
