  1. with 40k hands, you can get some decent position stats to see if you're losing too much from the blinds, not winning enough UTG, etc.
In your opinion, what are some "standard" stats for each position. Could you look at a 30k to 40k sample where you were winning at a decent rate and let me know what they looked like?Over the last 30k hands of breakeven frustration (at 2/4), mine look like this (in BB/hand):SB -- (-.12) ... (early in the sample I was over-completing quite a bit)BB -- (-.12)UTG -- +.07MP -- +.07CO -- +.09Btn -- +.10Thanks for the help Tim.
  2. I feel your pain bacon. Pretty much breakeven (up maybe 10BB) over the last 35k hands at 2/4 and 3/6 SH. I've never been through a B.E. stretch this long so I can't say from experience that it'll get better. But I'm keeping the faith, hope you do to.Thanks to the other responses in this thread, they're helpful. Here's a comment from one of Stoxtrader's bloggers. He's a pretty good mid-limit SH player, and he's going through a bad run too."I’m still running just horribly. Just to put things in perspective, in my first 150k hands of the year I was up roughly 3700 big bets. In my last 150k hands I’m up about 150 big bets and my breakeven streak is up well past 100k hands."That's pretty scary, but at the same time it helps to know that it happens.Best of luck.

  3. They're making plenty of money by floating the rake. Essentially, you're loaning them money through rake, and they're paying you back later. While you've "loaned" it to them, they can be earning interest on it in a bank.
Excellent point. Rates are also higher in Europe than they are here in the U.S.They may at some point end the 100% rakeback offer, but there's a chance they would grandfather in the players who had already signed up, which is why I did.I've only played there a couple of times, and it is moderately rocky at full ring (2/4 and 3/6). It's certainly not a rock-garden hell like Absolute is and I haven't found players to be THAT good. The 3/6 SH game appears to be pretty decent, I've seen lots and lots of limping. Will check that out at some point and report back.
  4. Villain in this hand is about 65/12/1 but I only have a very small sample of hands with him. He's already led into me once after I raised PF and the flop came low.PokerRoom 2/4 Hold'em (5 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FlopTurnRiver)Preflop: Leaf is Button with Jspade.gif, Jdiamond.gif. 1 fold, MP calls, Leaf raises, SB calls, BB calls, MP calls.Flop: (8 SB) 6club.gif, 3club.gif, 8diamond.gif(4 players)SB bets, BB calls, MP folds, Leaf raises, SB calls, BB calls.Turn: (7 BB) Kclub.gif(3 players)SB checks, BB checks, Leaf bets, SB calls, BB folds.--> I was planning to fold to a check-raise. 5. Flop is very draw heavy. Raise it up.As played, I cap the turn.
Thanks for the input Screech. What if the flop was, say, K85 rainbow? Maybe a better question is: Is slowplaying of any kind a disease in short-handed HE?
Other than misspelling 'egregious' :club:, here's what I got...
Hey ... good call on that. And I uzhullee spel goot two!
That said, once we hit this flop, we've got to raise. Don't get in the mindset of having to play tricky in going for turn raises. When you think you've got the best hand on the flop with two opponents and a board like this, get aggressive. Our lack of aggression on the flop means that we're stumbling around when we get 3-bet on the turn. He could have AA/KK/AK/TT/KT/QdJd. The truth is, we don't know. By getting aggressive on the earlier street, the later streets get much clearer.
This speaks to my follow up question to Screech. I'm beginning to wonder if most types of slow playing in short-handed games is a cancer I need to eradicate.

  7. In the middle of a juicy 200BB downswing, and am breakeven over the last 9500 hands or so. 8. Amen DN.Two of my favorite verses are Deuteronomy 28:8 and 2 Corinthians 1:20.The first one says, "The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand ..."And in Corinthians, Paul says, "For all the promises of God in Him (Christ) are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us."Not some of His promises. Not just a handful, or just the ones He feels like honoring that day, but ALL. This is really a wonderful statement. The Bible is chock full of promises for provision for our needs, for abundance (both materially and in other ways such as relationships, family, etc.), for health and much more. It is glorifying to God when His children receive good things.Too often I'll come across a christian who is not doing well in some area of their life, perhaps their health is not good, and their attitude is one of, "Well God must have some purpose for this", or my favorite, "The Lord moves in mysterious ways." No! That is not in the Bible. What IS in the Bible are promises upon promises of God's blessing on those who worship Him, and Him only. And all of those promises are Yes and Amen in Christ. If we lack something in our lives, it is due to a deficiency on our end, not because God doesn't want us to have it. God is a loving Father who wants to bestow abundant blessing on all those who worship Him. And that is Good News indeed!

  9. post flop he called a $20k bet where he had top pair Js....bettor had a set of 8s...at the turn he called again with no improvment and on the river he called "all in" to double up the bettor (brian maybe) Daniel stopped the action on the next hand , took him outside and i'm sure offered some nice parting gifts and a "thanks for playing ole timer" Jerry was severely crippled after calling the all in and could only make 1 turn around the board, so Daniel probably felt Euthanasia was in order
I believe he flopped two pair, Jacks and sixes, versus Brian's set of 8's.
  10. Heads up against a 45/25/2 I'm showing down TPTK for 2BB (check/calling turn and river) rather than bet/calling the turn, folding the river UI in a big pot and losing 2BB anyway. But that's just me, I've been wrong before ...

  11. gonn turn 26 in a couple of weeks, so, I'll say that I'm 26.Was a rutgers student for about 5 years as a jazz performance major and then a history/poli sci major until I dropped out due to making bundles off of ebay and other sources of revenue. Been playing poker since I was 12 and was sneaking into AC when I was 18, so I've been playing pretty much since then. RIght now I'm playing 5/10 and 10/20 short for my income and it makes me enough to live on since I only have to pay for myself for the time being
Dawg! Welcome to "this side" of 25!Been meaning to ask you for a few weeks now ... how're things going with the staking and the family stuff you mentioned a few months ago? Hope you don't mind me asking, but I was just curious how everything worked out ...
  12. The suggestions about drinking lots of water and taking short breaks every half hour or so to rest the eyes are good ones. Insufficient hydration is the #1 cause of common headaches ... it's the reason we get hangovers - dehydration. And frequent rests will give the actual muscles around the eyes a chance to recoup, like breaks between sets at the gym.Another thing to consider ... if the headaches are persistent enough, you might want to have your eyes checked. If a pair of reading glasses, or something like that, is the difference between pain and no pain, it'd be worth it. A lot of people, even people with near-perfect vision, get headaches from focusing on any one thing for too long. It has to do with their vision being ever so slightly off, too little to notice, but enough to cause eye strain as the eye compensates.Best of luck with the TP/MT.

  13. I agree that 2 - 3 years from now the games on Party won't be as soft as they are today, as they are already a little less soft than they were two years ago. But that's still a relative distinction. It's like saying, "marshmallow isn't as soft as cotton candy". While that's a true statement, marshmallow is still damn soft.As you might know, I'm a market guy and what has happened in poker the past few years has happened in the past to other performance-oriented professions (like trading). Something propels the profession and the allure of money into the public eye and an unprecendented growth spurt occurs. After a while, what happens is the expansion phase ends and a plateau is reached, where overall growth is basically flat. Sometimes, a bust cycle follows, as happened in the post-tech-bubble stock market. This could happen to poker if the government finds a way to ban AND enforce a ban on online poker (which I personally doubt will happen). There may be other unforseen circumstances that could cause the online poker world to burst (like a huge attack on internet infrastructure), but I think those all fall into the doom-and-gloom, "if that happens we've got bigger things to worry about" category.Back to my point, when a "normal" plateau-ing of growth occurs, it doesn't make the games (or markets) THAT much tougher. The reason is "turnover rate". The good players remain and the bad players blow out but are replaced by a new crop of bad players. Every year there's a new crop of kids who become old enough to gamble and will want to take a shot. Every year there's a new crop of white collar professional who, for the first time, have disposable income they don't know what to do with. Ten or fifteen years ago, this "yuppie" would take a shot in stocks. These days, I see many, many more taking a shot at poker. It's easier to set up an online poker account than a stock account, and you can start with less money (and reload more often). So I think DN was right ... there are a few more years of the "post-Moneymaker" boom left, after which we'll see a flattening out of the growth, but only a mild toughening up of the games. Teddy's analogy was a good one ... there's always a new crop/group/generation of tourists willing to feed the casinos, and there will always be a new crop/group/generation of people who will feed the Cobalts of the world from the comfort of their homes.

  14. Yes.If you have any sort of marginal hand, do your best to get to showdown. Don't put yourself in a situation where you set yourself up to get outplayed. In teh A4 example, you should happily check/call all the way down even if you raise pf. This guy will only hit 1/3 of the flops. If he always keeps betting if checked to, then he is losing a lot of money when you check/call down with your ace high. He may pick up on your strategy and start checking behind more turns. That's ok too. Just start c/ring flops with good hands to take the lead away and give yourself free cards when you are weak.
This makes sense. You're essentially playing wa/wb poker the majority of the time given your position. Lose the minimum when he has hit and let him bluff off his chips when he misses. Once he adjusts and slows down (if he does adjust) then you can start aggro'ing it up again.Just a thought ...
  15. Villian is nuts. He's already shown down third pair no kicker that he'd been jamming the pot with. He's more than capable of jamming pre-flop with anything. His stats are much more passive than he was playing ... he's 43/3/4 after a few hundred hands. Someone must've fired him up today.PokerRoom 2/4 Hold'em (5 handed) converterPreflop: Leaf is UTG with [Ad], [As]. Against most players I wouldn't even worry about just calling, but given what a huckle this guy was being, I wonder if anyone sees any value in trying to sneak in another BB.Any comments welcome.

  16. The player you described clearly isn't a good player. It obviously isn't a good move to call down w/ A high here.I don't mind the river check that much, Uber donks almost always bet this river (hit or miss).
I'm showing this down so I don't mind the river check if there's any chance that villian would bluff with Ace high. He might have a moment of clarity and fold Ace high to a bet so inducing a bluff, if we think he would bet it, is better than betting, imo. Not to mention getting raised here sucks.
