  1. Even though I played the hand pretty standard I felt it was difficult to play. I did not feel in control of the hand after the 6 of spades fell but it is very difficult to put him on any kind of hand. I had no idea what the weak flop bet meant and obviously when I called PF I was sort of expecting something in the range of AA, KK, QQ, JJ, TT, AK, AQ.Also, even though the only holding that has me beat on this board is 22 when he shoved on the river I couldn't help thinking, "What the hell?"Do you have any advice about how to play in these spots where you just can't place the villain on anything? Is this when I have to fall back on solid fundamentals in order to play the hand well?
You need to understand how strong your hand is here on the flop. Firstly, under no circumstances are you ever ever going to fold here. If it even crosses your mind quit poker immediately. Now that you have established you are going all the way you want to get as much value out of the hand as possible. He has a spade draw extremely rarely, as you said, most of his range is made up of big pairs and high cards. I agree that his line is a little strange here but you are ahead like 99% of the time, just examine his stack size on the flop and start thinking about how you can size your bets to get it all in by the river.
  2. I didn't say you were, I just really ment to say that with the insta min raise I don't think flop bet size mattered. It ended up just flowing into my reasons for folding just to get them out there.
The insta raise is pretty weird don't you think? And the raise is pretty large as well. Did this factor into your thinking at all?
  3. I don't think flop bet matters here. I was insta reraised which tells me the villian probably planned on raising before he checked. I think if I bet $2 or $14 I get the same results. Also, 1/2 - 3/4 would be my standard bet size here so anything else would stand out from the 10 other times I played pots against him and coninuation bet with or without a hand.I chose the smaller end of that range for a reason that I really didn't like my hand if I got raised and the only reason I bet is because of the combo straight and flush draw. Had one of the two not been present I would have checked this every time but I felt obligated to bet to protect against the draws. After being raised I didn't know what to do so I thought until I got the 15 sec to act reminder. At that point I guess I just went with my orginal thinking of not liking my hand to a raise, figured I could find another spot, and folded.
I'm not questioning your reasoning behind the fold, it is solid. I guess I just can't give the villain credit for a Q often enough here to let it go.With the flop bet I guess I just size my bets on the flop a bit differently. I would bet between $10 and $12 here myself, but I guess if this is your normal cbet then it is sweet.
  4. Well, the reason for the reraise was that I considered my K and Q to be an out, I also only really had the middle position to worry about behind me as the SB was checking and UTG had already folded.vs. a single pair I am a favorite and his bet looked like a scared jack at the time. I probably didn't think this hand through too well though.
I think you might need to take into account that there are a brazillion ppl to act behind you and the board connected with a fair portion of their ranges. And do not consider your K or Q as an out here, that is a significant leak. The villain will very often show up with KJ/QJ here.
  5. not a bad spot to c/r. You're heads up and that is about the best flop you could ask for with QQ. Bet that flop and 90% of the time, villain is just going to fold. I'm still trying to figure out what the hell that guy could had that would flat call a bet on the flop then fold the turn when spades come? I'm thinking something like 99 or TT....
I agree. I think the villain had either TT or JJ here with the slighest possibility of a horrible float with AK.
  6. Yeah, AQ, KQ, QJ, QT, 99I dunno. You gotta be right about this pretty much every time becuase when you're behind, you're drawing VERY slim and when he's behind, he's usually drawing pretty live. Unless I had a pretty solid read to tell me that he'd do this with less than a Q, then I'm folding here.
Do hands with a queen in them other than AQ or QQ really call 12BB preflop? I would be reluctant to include the likes of QJ or QT in his range tbh. I just don't think its profitable to build a laggy image and then let hands like this go. This is the type of hand we get away from if we have a tight table image with some respect, I might be wrong though. Also I am not a massive fan of our flop bet. I think it looks kind of weak and may have induced this guy to make a play at us. I prefer betting like $10-$12.I dunno, I probably just go with it here, I am bad though so that needs to be factored into the equation, but Shinzilla's good and he agreed with me. :club:
  7. I wasn't saying to do that as a standard. In this situation I think it would have been fine to take a stab. If you get called, check it on the turn. If you get raised, drop it like a hot potato. What's the sense in checking it down and hitting your set on the river against a lowball straight draw? You let the guy who stayed in with 4 5 draw to his open ended straight on the turn and make the miracle on the river. Now you're screwed regardless. With all of the checking in front of him on the flop, a small bet would've driven quite a few of the players out of the pot. Including possibly the guy with 4 5. I can't see anyone in their right mind calling any bet on that flop with 4 5.You guys are almost too cautious sounding to me. Yes, the smart play is to check it, but he ends up in this dilemma on the river and makes a post about it. JMHO.Edit: I also don't see much of a problem raising preflop with this hand in late position. That would make a continuation bet on the flop be worth while.
Firstly, raising this preflop would have been fine. In this case hopefully we would have thinned the field allowing us to represent a hand like AK or KJ with a bet on the flop if we could get the pot HU or maybe 3 handed. The thing is you are being results based by saying he should have bet the flop here to chase out the 45. Ask yourself what your answer would have been if he had posted this hand with the action on him on the flop with an underpair against 4 opponents and two broadway cards on the flop. I guarantee nobody would have chosen betting as the optimal play.
  8. Not even a small feeler bet? The reason I'm saying to bet the flop is because everyone folded to his bet on the turn. With no raises and so many folds on the turn, I think he would've been able to steal this pot on the turn should he have bet the flop. But, then again I like to get frisky and take some chances that are under the "stupid" category.Edit: And yes, I know betting 22 on this kind of flop is just outrageous, but c'mon. We've all made a play like that and have stolen a pot. Sometimes you have to be crazy/loose to take a pot. That's the only reason I'm suggesting it. That, and the lack of action. No preflop raises and no flop bets. I've bet into boards like this and taken it down many times. But, that's only after sitting for awhile and having good table image that I rarely enter a pot with garbage hands. I would never bet into a flop like that if I just sat at a table.Edit 2: And I can just hear Norm in the background saying, "This is an ugly flop. Whoever bets first is likely to take it down." Haha.
The flop contains two broadway cards which connects with a ton of hands. We don't take this down on the flop anywhere near enough to make it profitable to bet the 22. If you are called on the flop you are definately toast or up against QT which has like a brazillion outs against you anyway. BLuffing the turn after getting called on the flop is not great either I don't think. Too many villains get sticky with a J or K to make this profitable IMO.
  9. I find LHE far less boring for a few reasons.More raising, reraising, more showdowns, more drawing, more action...
I used to play limit and I can kind of see where you are coming from in that there are a lot more hands with interesting dynamics in them when you are playing limit, especially SH. Also, there are periods in no limit that can just suck and be ridiculously boring. Having said that, there is nothing like the feeling of stacking AA with 222 for 100 BB IMO, which is something you can't do in limit. Also, you need to factor into the equation that no man has ever played LHE for more than 2 years without being declared mentally insane and institutionalised for the remainder of his adult life.
  10. I started playing NLHE cash on FTP earlier this year and started with $100 at the $10 max tables. I built i up to about $150 and thought I was going ok. Then I had one session where I lost 7.5 buy ins. I felt very similar to how you are feeling now, I just kept thinking how horrible I was playing, maybe I should go back to limit, etc etc.The one thing I remember most about that day was I had AA cracked a fair few times. I started to question my play in the most ridiculous of circumstances. I remember late on in the session stacking off with AA on a TJx board against TJ when the guy had called off 1/3 of his stack pf. The most outrageous thing was that I actually managed to convince myself that I had made a bad play by doing this. All I can say is do not do this. Personally I found the best thing to do was to get straight back on the horse. I just went straight back on the next day and started playing again. I have never had another day like this one for 8 months, but I know exactly how you are feeling.

  11. In your position with all those checks coming to you on the flop, I would have bet there and maybe a continuation bet on the turn depending on the action. If you get raised on the flop, it's a pretty easy lay down and you avoid this river dilemma.
Betting 22 on this board against 4 opponents is no good IMO.
