  1. The following refers to a typical limit holdem game.Quite often a game where I'm in late position and the game usually has 4 people seeing the flop, if the pot hasn't been raised once its get to me and only 2 people called in front of me I'll raise with something like AJ offsuit. This will usually force out the blinds and put me up against 2 opponents on the flop. When flop comes i have no pair or draws, but I do have 2 overcards. Usually the 2 people will check to me, and I immediately bet. Sometimes this forces both out, and sometimes it doesn't. Usually at least one will fold.So this q
  2. I want to be sure I understand this correctly. When you say AQ/AJ are you talking about AQ/AJ offsuit or suited? Would it be a bad idea to limp in general? Should hands like AT,KT,QT,JT all offsuit be raised? I'm not sure what to do about pocket 77's or 88's.I think I understand what you mean about drawing hands. I'll start playing more of the low suited connectors. I imagine the same can be said for Ax suited. I'm not sure if Kx suited gains any value in this type of game. But your right the game is different when structured like this. This was the first type of holdem I started playi
  3. This question in regards to the structure of a3/6/12 Limit Holdem table. This is the lowest limit game at the B&M casino I play at. I havent seen it online at PokerRoom (where I play) so I'm not sure if any online casinos have this type of game. The structure is such that betting before and on flop is $3. Betting on the turn is $6. And the betting on river can be either $6 or $12. If someone bets $12, and the other person wants to raise it he must raise by $12 (he cant raise $6 after a $12 bet/raise).So does this structure affect your strategy in how you would approach the game? Do
  4. I play at Poker Room since I have a Mac, and was wondering if there a poker stat tracker or something that was avaiable for the Mac. All the ones that I have seen are only for Windows. I know that the site keeps hand histories, but I would like an application that will give me some valuable information so that I can imrove my game (number of flops seen, showdowns won, ect.).By the was I dont have Virtual PC, so I'm using the java applet to play on OSX through the we browser.
  5. Thanks for the replies fellas. I'll just consider it an idiot who happened to get lucky. It's nothing to get too worked up over. And you're right in the long run I'll make money off that guy.I've noticed several times in just my first week online that someone will accuse others of teaming up and working together. They will outright accuse others of colluding at the table. Most of the time I didnt notice anything out of the ordinary and just kept playing. Maybe all their chatter about colluding has made me paranoid. But in general I agree with yall that it is more likely that their play
  6. I have just started playing online poker a couple of weeks ago, and didnt worry about collusion too much, but the following hand has me scratching my head. The table I was playing at was fairly passive (this is .50/$1 limit Holdem table at PokerRoom). Usually if there was a preflop raise it was me doing the raising. I'm under the gun with pocket 10's. I immediately raise. A couple of people in the middle position cold call, the SB calls, and then the BB re-raises. Considering I havent seen anyone re-rraise at this table in the last hour I'm concerned, but I go ahead and call and figure I'l
  7. How often do yall fold after the river card comes out if you have a feeling you are beat?I've had the following situations come up recently. I usually have top pair or a pocket pair higher than whats on the board and by 4th street I'm heads up with someone else. My opponent was passive on the flop (check/call) and I've been aggressive(bet/raise). Now on 4th street, my opponent raises me or on the river he bets (after he has been checking/calling the whole way). By the way the cards have come out and how he has bet I have a feeling I'm beat. Even though I think I'm beat, I still go ahead a
  8. I understand that staking other people is a normal occurance, but it definately creates a conflict of interest during the tournament. To make a comparison to professional sports, this is exactly why an sports owner cant own 2 teams in the same sport. Would one team dump games to another if it helped the other team win their division? The leagues try their best to insure the compition is legit and both teams are trying to win.In the poker world we have come to accept this as part of the game and thats fine. I dont think it hurts the game all that much since people have come to accept that s
  9. What is a typical rake at a B&M casino? I've only been to Harrahs in Lake Charles and the rake there is 10% with a maximum of $5 (I play at the 3/6/12 tables). Is this high or average? I'm just curious as to if I should look for a casino with a more favorable rake or if this is as good as it gets. Thanks.
  10. I really think its difficult to put any meaning on the numbers you posted with a sample size of just 100 hands. I mean its possible that you hit a good run of starting hands causing you to see more flops than normal. It's also possible that you had a lot of bad luck in the showdowns you saw given just 100 hands. I believe once you get into thousands of hands you can start placing some reall meaning on those numbers. My suggestion is to go back and look at the hands you played and analyze how you played them.
  11. Well like the title says, do yall think bluffing is overrated (in limit or no-limit)?I ask because it seems like a lot of people have brought up this issue recently. I keep hearing statements like: "Bluffing is a huge part of the game," "The game was hard to beat because I couldn't bluff them," ect.I play almost exclusively limit holdem, and rarely ever use a bluff without having any type of hand. But I've seen other people bluff to the point where it seems like they're bluffing about 25% of the time. It seems that bluffing is the main part of their game. I have a friend that does this an
  12. I wonder if the dealers ruling was in part because it was heads up play. If there were other people in the pot it may have been different since you might be giving information to someone else. You frequently see some wierd situations come up in B&M play. It happens not just from new players, but also because after playing for 3 or 4 hours people will eventually get caught not paying attention. It happens to all of us now and then. I'm sure the dealer has seen this before and made the right call. If its ever in doubt the dealer will call for the floor manager.
  13. One important factor the simulations you mentioned might of missed: the rake.I believe in the game you descibed of 10 players who play exactly the same, the rake would make all of them long term losers. Think about it. If the house just collected $1 from every pot, over 60,000 hands that would be $60,000 right down the drain.I think the real interesting question is how many fish are needed at the table to overcome the rake and make the good players long term winners? Are there any simulations that account for the rake?
  14. Yes you should continue to raise with AA, AK, ect. even if they are ignoring your raises. These cards give you the advantage. If they are ignoring your raises, the raise may not affect how many pots you win, but it will affect the size of the pots you do win. So with them ignoring your raises you're going to have a lot of bad beats, but the size of the pots you win will more than make for that. Bottom line, in order to make more money in the long run, raise with thise hands.
  15. Matt Miner - i wouldn't be at all surprized if ivey made close to ten figures last. I don't know if you realize this, but 10 figures is $1 billion. Counting everything they make I don't think any poker player is even remotely close to this.
  16. I think Smash is right.I was watching a tournament on TV a couple years ago, and although I can't remember specific details, one thing stuck in my mind. The commentators mentioned how much Greenstien had made in his cash games. I can't remember the exact number, but it was somewhere between $1.2 million and $1.5 million, and they said he had a "phenominal year." They also indicated that anything over $1 million is an excellent year. I only remember this because it seemed so much lower than I had orginally thought.
  17. What is the purpose of a straddle bet? I know what it is, but why would you do that? This came up at my last two trips to the casino when I saw two different people do this on several occassions (4 or 5 times). For those who don't know, a straddle is where the person to the left of the Big Blind (who is suppose to be the first to act) raises the betting before the cards are even dealt. So basicly he's rasing without seeing his cards. This seemed rather foolish to me. I guess its to rattle opponents, but at the 3/6/12 table quite a few people didnt even know what it was, and therefore just
  18. After reading the replies, I think I'm going to take advantage of people exposing their cards. I think the thing that did it for me is that protecting your cards is a basic fundamental of the game. So just like knowing the number of outs, when to call/raise, ect., it's the players responsibility to know these things. And by the way red, I do play at Harrah's in Lake Charles. That 2 hour drive is killing me!Thanks for the replies.
  19. I recently started playing at casinos and I ran into a situation on more than one occasion where the guy sitting next to me wasnt properly guarding his hole cards and practically giving me a free look. Keep in mind I'm NOT intentionally doing this. I am NOT leaning back and over trying to sneak a peek at his cards. I actually lean over the table with both my elbows on the table. This usually happens when the player to my right uses his right hand to look at his cards and does not use his left to protect them. I'm actually looking at his hands to see if he's grabbing chips or other give aw
  20. I'm relatively new to poker, and I was wondering what type of starting hands you would use at a table that was playing tight. I'm talking about a table that where there are 10 people sitting down but only 4 or maybe 5 people (including you) seeing the flop consistantly. Do the suited connectors below 10 lose their value with so few people in the pot? Is it better to start playing Ax orKx? What are good hands to limp in with?I ask this because the last 2 times I went to the casino (I dont play online) this was the type of table I had and I struggled a little bit. I play at the 3/6/12 tables
