  1. I have not read the ammendment (or whatever it is) --- if anyone has a link I'd like to read it.But it occurs to me that the intent is to prohibit gambling by way of a computer terminal that is linked via the internet to a central server somewhere. If that is the case, wouldn't that prohibition also apply to state lottery outlets? Terminals linked to central servers. Using phone lines, fiber optic lines, or satellites to communicate. Same thing, isn't it?Maybe the way to attack this is to take those states with lotteries to federal court seeking injuctions against their illegal internet gamblin
  2. "There's no way to rule innocent men.The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law-abiding citizens? What's there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted - and you create a nation of law-breakers and then you cash in on guilt."Ayn Rand --- Atlas Shrugged --- 1957
  3. It is interesting that even though the majority believes the hand should be live the example above indicates that sometimes the ruling goes the other way.In this instance I was the guy with the flush and I was also the guy that told the other guy he had won the hand. Only afterward did the discussion start as to whether the hand was live or dead and who should have taken the pot.I thought it should be live. Even thouugh it busted me out of the game. But I was also influenced by the knowledge that most of the players in this monthly event are social players and not terribly sophisticated. They
  4. The discussion was "cards speak for themselves" on one side versus "hand touching the muck is dead" on the other side. Thanks for the input.I was able to find Harrah's WSOP rules - are the official rules for Hold Em online anywhere?
  5. I will freely admit that there are some rules of the game that I am not adequately familiar with. And a situation came up recently that I did not know the answer to.Player A shows a flush. Player B - a new player with little experience - says "I was afraid you had a flush but I just couldn't fold" and throws a pair which completes a full house face up onto the muck cards. Dead hand or not?Player B later explained that he could never remember "what beats what".I'm wondering what the official ruling would have been at a real tournament.Thanks.
  6. I appreciate the replies, guys.I've only played a couple of these games and cashed in both, once for decent money & once for break even.I've approached them with an intent to not invest any more than I absolutely have to and don't think I will change that approach. What has been described is pretty much the way I have played, although I'll have to think about tightening up more than normal. I tend to play pretty tight (some might say very tight) until the table gets down to 5-6 and then broaden my range a bit. If I move back to a fuller table I will tighten up again for a couple reasons -
  7. I'm currently re-reading Harrington's books (trying to catch everything that I didn't on the first read). He suggests ways of dealing with different kinds of tournaments but there is one that he doesn't specifically address that I would like some input on.Many of the local tourneys follow the same structure - tables of 8 players, 1500 in chips to start, starting blinds of 25/50, blinds double every 20 minutes. And, oh yeah, unlimited re-buys plus one add on in the first hour. So, typically, half an hour into the game if you haven't substantially increased your stack you find yourself squarely i
  8. Mark, I don't disagree with what you are saying. In a different situation I may well have played the hand differently. This question about the odds was an afterthought, sort of. At the time, I thought I was looking at this from the right perspective. On the drive home I started second-guessing it. Just wanted to know whether I had calculated correctly or not.I'm not trying to justify my play with this question. To be honest, I did what I did for reasons which related to the hand itself and for "other" reasons. On the hand itself, I had played a tournament not long ago from start to finish with
  9. Yes, third paid but so did 4th. Fourth place worked out to the buy-in plus the entry fee (my mistatement earlier, sorry, I tend to lump it all together). So it was essentially a "money back" position. Third paid a few bucks more, not enough to sweat it. First was 50%. So I would either put myself in a good position to win 50% or bust and get my money back.As for the coin flip - you are right. I didn't know it at the time (checked a hand calculator today) I was actually ahead 52%-48% at the flop. A queen would give me trips or a king would make 2 pair (still could have lost with either, I know)
  10. You should consider the odds for both streets combined, right?Four players left in small live tournament. 10K in the pot, 27K remaining in my stack.Holding K (spades) and Q. Flop is A-Q-7 all spades.Chip leader goes all-in and has me covered. He is generally a tight player and half an hour earlier I would definitely put him on an Ace. But now, after he has taken a few pots without showing, I still think so but I'm not sure. Relatively small chance my Queen may actually be good. I think I am behind at this point and I think I have 14 good outs. Which would mean drawing odds of about 2.2 for eac
  11. Guess I should have tried Google. I was searching the individual sites with no luck. Next time. Thanks, again, everyone.
  12. Yeah, OK, we are on the same page. See this a lot when it gets down to 3 (sometimes 4) handed.I'm not a huge fan, though. Overuse generally leads to getting picked off eventually, from what I've seen. Thanks for the help, guys.BTW, how do you find those links like that? As I said, I either get "no matches found" or zillions that I don't have the patience to wade through.
  13. Appreciate the responses so far. But I have another question. The 2+2 thread referred to 3 betting, capping, and earning x# of small bets so I assume those folks were talking about the use of "stop n go" in limit games. In the thread where I originally saw the term, the original poster was talking about NL single table tourneys.I have an idea as to how this would play in a NL game (actually, maybe I'm familiar with the play itself and simply never heard the term before).Could one of you give a brief example of how you would do it in a NL tourney, just to see if we are on the same sheet of music
  14. I have seen postings on another site referring to something called "the stop and go play". Searches have either turned up nothing or 2 million threads (I'm probably not doing it right).I'd like to read a description of this. Could someone post an explanation or a link, please? Thanks.
  15. A young boy walks into a barber shop and the barber whispers to the customer in the chair, "This is the dumbest kid in the world. Watch, I'll prove it to you."He takes two quarters in one hand and a dollar bill in the other hand and holds them out to the young lad and says, "Here ya go, kid, take either one."The boy takes the 2 quarters and says, "Thank you, sir" and goes out the door. The barber turns to the customer and says, "See, I told you. He's so dumb he doesn't know one dollar is worth more than 2 quarters. Every time I do this he always takes the quarters."When the customer leaves the
