Everybody has a stack of $5 chips that don't play. Those chips are used for toking dealers. Dealing the "big game" is not much more a moneymaking opportunity for a dealer than any other dealt game.

You could make the argument that given all the available tracking software and information at online players' disposal, the advanced online player will have a greater advantage over his opponents than the average fulltime live player. This is even before discussing the question of volume.

I'll bump once. Still curious how this wound up...

He got an unfair advantage by being allowed to take a shower.

With pen and paper, trying to calculate the odds of two random hands with the full board to come is an intensive calculation. And, yes, there are existing odds calculators out there, but I think he's trying to figure out a way to do his own.

I think most of the odds calculators online work by having the calculator literally play the hand out millions of times and then displaying the results. This produces results that are virtually correct but can be slightly off to a degree that isn't close to significant. If anyone knows of something different or if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me. As for shows on TV, I've seen it both ways. Sometimes, they'll show the odds of one hand against another without taking the other cards at the table into account. Other times, if a specific card has been mucked, it's absence will be reflected

Yep. So many people pulling money out at once that the bank probably doesn't have the cash on hand to cover all the transactions. Does not sound (yet) like they're in danger of folding, so everyone may yet get their money. In the US, the FDIC protects all bank deposits up to an amount of $100,000 to insure against such a thing. Unfortunately, Neteller is not a US bank.

People want to see popular players they recognize with personality. A lot of WPT final tables may offer only 1 or 2 "known" players, if that. On HSP everyone is a household name. Hence, more people watching. Also, ratings for the WPT are still very healthy.

I would say you're a tad off in that logic. There are many jobs that people can find interesting and stimulating but still not do without getting paid. It'd important to draw a distinction between something that's a "job" and something that's a "profession" or an "occupation". People go to school and obtain degrees because by achieving expertise in a given field they acquire skills their peers don't have, which in turn gets them paid to do their job. When you are a professional at anything, payment isn't merely a source of income - although of course everyone has to pay the bills somehow -

Yep. Worst possible hi hand in 7-stud is 2345789 (4-5-7-8-9 plays). Worst possible hi including an ace is A234678 (4-6-7-8-A plays).

I think this statement is one of the dumbest things I've heard recently.OP, you sound pretty motivated to do something to improve where you are in life. That's a very good start. If you're worried about struggling at a full time college, there are other options. You can go to school part time, take classes at night or enroll in community college. There are a number of options available. If you're interested in breaking into the casino industry it might be helpful to move to a place like LV or AC, if you have the money saved up. As a high school grad (and an English speaker, frankly) you

If there is anything more enjoyable than wrapping up a nice session at the poker tables and then heading directly downstairs for some Tony Luke's, I haven't found it yet. Actually maybe if it were Geno's instead...

Just stay within the warm confines of the Borgata. Avoid AC strip clubs unless you like the implicit threat of a mugging.

Head of nail... meet hammer. This is a very perceptive post and I like it. When people complain about those "maniacs" who have so much success online, they're venting. In their heart of hearts they know it isn't true, because if it was they would adopt that style themselves and reap the profits. The astute player (novice or expert) will notice what his successful opponents are doing around him and will incorporate these elements into his own game in order to improve. The player who is unwilling to change anything about how he plays is inevitably doomed to fail.

Considering he check raised you and then folded to a modest reraise he very likely had nothing and was bluffing, so I don't know that this hand provides the best example for this play. Ideally, if you really want to know you'd probably like to try it out against someone who has a some kind of hand to see how he reacts.

One thing to consider: It may be in your long term best interest to let online poker disappear for now. If the floor falls out it may create an incentive for the major corporations to get behind legalization and regulation. If the market dries up temporarily it would allow them to generate their own software and get up and running without have to compete handicapped by established sites. Remember, it's still an exceptionally profitable commodity. The real reason the law had such an easy time passing was that the big companies and the AGA did not throw any of their weight behind the issue.

That's because your biggest tourist attractions are snow, moose and cleanliness.

May I just ask, politely, why someone would view the concept of evolution and natural selection as being in opposition to faith? Is it considered a threat to religion? There is a very long history of organized religion opposing science in astronomy, physics and biology, and in many cases these ideas are now accepted universally (unless anyone here believes the sun revolves around the earth). It just seems hard to reconcile everything to me and I'd like for someone to explain why faith and science - in this case at least - can't coexist.

I'll take, "Things I never thought any human would say" for $200, Alex. Go Jersey!

These are all reasons why it potentially couldn't work, but they aren't prohibitive in and of themselves. Someone with a high enough level of talent can overcome these obstacles. No one ever said it was easy.

Easy to say when you know the hole cards but it looked to me like Mike had some kind of brain lock on that one. The bet from Gabe wasn't huge relative to the pot and with all the talking about "Can you beat two sevens?" I thought Mike would look him up for sure. It seemed like when Gabe sat down some people at the table sort of lost their focus and I think it cost Mike a pot in this situation.

It's great for people who can make it work, and one of the best things about living in a free society is that a person can make a living for himself however he deems bes and no one can tell him otherwiset. But you really have to consider it as seriously as you would any potential career. First of all, playing 40+ hours a week is a job that requires discipline like any other. If you're basing your income estimation on maintaining a slow steady winrate you need to make sure you're capable of sustaining that grind week after week. Moreover, you have to look at it in terms of where you want to

But a job is an investment that provides you with skills which makes you more desirable to future employers who will pay you more. If your current job pays you close or equal to what you estimate you can make playing poker full time, then playing poker has a negative EV relative to your future. You sacrifice: a steady and consistent stream of income for the stress of playing for a living, the aforementioned benefits (health, etc.) that come with a job, the investment in yourself as capital which would pay dividends in a better job down the line. Unless you can make appreciably more playing

$300 in tournament chips? What do the blinds start at? That doesn't sound like a good structure at all. If some cash isn't a problem you'll want to play tournaments with buy ins starting at the low three-digit level. There are numerous websites that can point you to schedules and information on structures that will give you more play for your money and better opportunity to turn a profit.

This thread is worth a bump so I can give you all a wonderful gift. The next grilled cheese you make, instead of buttering the inside, spread olive oil on each slice. Then butter the outside for appropriate grilling. Use whatever cheeses and toppings you feel like (adding a little garlic or sea salt goes well with the oil), and be prepared for a little slippage if the cheese gets really melty. But it's really worth it. Also, if you're going to eat these, keep your cardiologist on speed dial.
