While Ungar is clearly the best player of the pack at the moment, I think Hachem may prove to be a better player. He is just awesome. In the last two years, his accomplishments (ME Champ, WPT champ, high finishes) is as good as any player in the game. He has taken some horrid beats in big tournaments, otherwise, he would have accomplished more. He always seems to get his money in with the best hand, and people just either out flop him or suck out. His ability to lead in hands where the money is all in is one of the indications of his outstanding ability.

I agree with what you're saying. Daniel wanting to see lots of flops and slow playing are two very different things. With one, you can lay it down, with the other you go broke if you're opponent flops big as was the case. I would have played it differently, but I can't say that DN's play was bad. There is some logic to slow playing a big hand late in a tournament when you need to really start to accumulate chips, but I think survival is still paramount. I liken it to the way Hachem would the ME. He was patient and short-stacked until the cards gave him the opportunity to pounce.

I posted saying that I would have played the hand differently. I was not critical of the way DN played it; there's logic to that play. My main reason for playing aces aggressively, especially after there has been an aggressive raise as in the actual hand, is that I want to test the strength of my opponent's hand so that I get some information. Most of the time, if I make an aggressive raise with AA, my opponent will fold, which would have been the case on this hand. Daniel: This reply is no diss, but I would have played it differently than you did. After Medic raised, I would have made a healthy re-raise. He may have called since he had such a large chip advantage over you. If he called, you would have been busted anyway with that flop. If he didn't call, you would have taken down a small, but not insignificant, pot. As you say, you were playing to see a lot of flops, so if you take this small pot pre-flop, you would have gotten more chips to see more flops with. There's a great deal we can do about it. We don't need to do it alone, but we should lead the effort. We can certainly put together a coalition of international forces and use international pressure to protect the innocent and punish the wrongdoers. It worked in the old Yugoslavia. The evil ones from that conflict are even being tried and convicted for war crimes. Tough one. If this guy was trapping with two pair, this is a weird way to do it. He could have gotten a flush draw on the turn given that he checked and then called the raise. The river does absolutely nothing for him it would seem and wouldn't scare me given that there is no flush, although there is a str8 draw. He could have gotten his str8 on the turn and slow played it to the river. Any two pair beats us. A weak ace we can beat, but not much of anything else. I think I would fold not knowing anything about this player. Fold is my answer.

What is up with Daniel? How do you call off all your chips with middle pair. Doesn't make any sense to me, unless he thought the dude was on a stone cold bluff. If you heard Daniel's blog regarding the last WPT event, Festa el Lago, it seems like he is playing some pretty horrendous poker. Daniel, maybe you should take a break from playing and get all of those things that are distracting you in order and out of the way. Otherwise, you are just contributing to the payoff and probably getting into some bad play habits.

His resume is obviously very impressive, but again, that's his accomplishments, it really doesn't substantively describe why he's been able to accomplish those things or why he's so "great". In other words, great results, but how and why does he get those great results that other players do not.

Al, I really enjoyed your analysis of those important hands at the Festa Al Lago tourney. Care to share any others? From your description, it seems clear to me that you played those hands very well and were it not for some suck outs, you would still be in the tourney with a nice chip stack with which to attack your opponents.

First of all, good luck. Second, with your less than average chip stack, you obviously need a double up and quickly. I think the best way to do that is to tighten your play and hope for a big hand or a small pocket pair that hit the flop where you can push and hopefully get a couple of callers. Tripling up on a hand like that is a real possibility so I say watch for those types of hands to try to build your stack.
