Strat - you should become an actuary. Had one leave one of our portfolio companies today for a crazy amount of money. She was probably like 33.
Shake's basically a millionaire, so no advice there.

Do yourself favor and skip the river and go straight to the south side Irish parade
Pretty sure they shut down the south side irish parade a few years ago. It was awesome.

I have the business environment and concepts from 2012, wonder if that's held up? There's not a whole lot to it. I've seen those quiz apps on my iphone, I'll have to get them.
got a haircut today, girl that cut my hair looks exactly like bonnie rotten. i need a shower.
As long as you're not an inbred hillbilly from Virginia (sorry Sal) you'll be fine on BEC.

so napa and essay have the best lives of everybody in the thread? is that... is that what we're saying here?
Wow. I guess I need to post more.
The real question is how low does the guarenteed money have to be before I choose the coin flip?
100k is still an easy take. 50k too.
Now at 20k I hesitate.
Have some self respect. You're a lawyer dammit. $100k should have a minimal impact over the span of your lifetime, but $5M changes things. Ladies like guys with $5M.
i've never spent more than 90 for a dinner.
How is this possible? On yourself, or including dates? Not even drinks and dinner with friends?
If you were offered a job with a huge company that had offices in every major city in every state and it paid $75k annually regardless of which location you were in, which city would you choose?
For someone right out of college? I'd say Chicago. Much better cost of living than NYC and SF.
I got the title and the raise today. The title now, the raise starts November 1. It's 15% more. I had asked for 25%, so this is good, and we agreed to discuss the remaining money at the end of our fiscal.
To look at it another way, I will be making 50% more than what I was making a year ago. This feels awesome.
Congrats. I need to have the comp discussion with the partners. I will probably be looking again soon.
like, I showed the entire conversation to Cha! Cha! yesterday. he certainly didn't seem to think it was a definite no.
I still don't know who Cha Cha is.

half that post appears to be written in a foreign language.
This is a business decision, we don't need the lawyers to dot our i's yet. We'll call you when you're needed.
I feel like they would have just given me the promotion, or offered to bump up my salary to keep me in this group, if they really wanted me to stay.
I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just, the reward I got for cutting a $30k/year position was a $50 gift card.
you're right, no one ever got ahead in life by being complacent and comfortable. I know I gotta leave eventually, but this plan of yours is so ballsy and risky.
I think you're hung up on the apathy of your peers and the middle management with whom you interact. Someone cares about how much money your division makes. If you can convince that person your programs can reduce headcount by 3 (example) people per month at a fully-loaded cost of $4k each, he should be happy to license the program from you for $5k.
Oh and SA - just giving you sht. I enjoy seeing how annoyed lawyers get when they're told "it's a business decision."
-
IE - why don't you quit your job, write a program (either in excel or an actual software program) that automates the work at your firm? License it back to them for $5k / month (suggestion) plus some consulting / implementation fees. However much you can save them in headcount per month, charge them 1/2 or 1/3 of that amount so they're guaranteed a 2:1 or 3:1 ROI. Whoever owns your P&L (your AVP? his boss?) should be interested in the savings to your group.

Napa - how are you not on Tinder? Come on man that's a no-brainer.
if I had to make a list of what topics I'd spend time on, given that there is a finite amount of time to make an impression on a kid, I would not ever in a million years pick the cotton gin. teach kids more about greek or roman history or something. the cotton gin says nothing about human nature and imparts no knowledge on the learner that can be applied to anything they are going to encounter in the real world. if you wanna talk about innovation, expand the sections on franklin or edison or whatever. there is literally no reason that most of the US population should be able to produce the name eli whitney or explain what the cotton gin is. it's ****ing stupid.
Invention of the cotton gin led to a huge increase in slavery (cotton was now much more profitable), which was one of the factors that led to the Civil War. Knowing Eli Whitney invented it isn't important, but It's part of the bigger picture.
Will catch up more tomorrow morning.

I feel like IE has been spot-on with all of his posts this week. I'm bumping him to #1 for now.
Wait, IE isn't Cha Cha?

Sounds like relaxing with some new jams would have been very bro and very mellow after that energy expenditure. Close your eyes and feel the Rythm man.
your style is like, I can't describe it. either you're doing a character and I love it/you or you're genuine and I genuinely hate you
Definitely a character. And I'd bet my house with my mother in it he misspelled "rhythm" as part of the character.
I'm taking the promotion btw. there are like, a thousand concrete and reliable positives to it vs. one flimsy potential negative. and one of the positives is, "you get paid more money when you eventually do move to London or Sydney, if you still want to do it a year from now"
when my manager basically told me what was up this morning, it just kept running through my head, "well, if I take this, I'm basically their bitch for another year. and I don't want to be a bitch." but once I got over that, I realized there wasn't much actual downside to them giving me everything I could possibly gain in roughly the time frame I wanted it, plus or minus a month.
Stratty, what would you get on the GMAT? We may need to start thinking about an MBA for you.
Also - move to a real city. How many times have you talked about moving (Chicago, Orlando, London, London/Sydney)? I'm Ben Affleck in Good Will Hunting and you're Will - I hope some day you just up and move, and then I go do construction work.

I would have guessed a firefighter makes 35ish starting out. Thought it was odd my cousin was able to support a wife and three kids on his income alone. Jesus fu.ck. I'm getting in shape just so I can be a firefighter. My max I'll top out (not counting inflation of course) is proably 125k. And that's like, best case scenario.
Napa, if you do well in public accounting you'll definitely make over $125k. Don't sell yourself short.

My guess is Shake's cells are formatted as text cells. When you open the formula and hit enter, it reformats it into general or number. Highlight all the cells, hit control + 1, then change formatting to general.
Pretty much guaranteed the above doesn't work because I feel pretty confident it will.

Oh Christ here it comes. I really hope the neighbor doesn't dump skank bag anytime soon. If she came to me tomorrow asking me to take her back I would in a heartbeat. I fell for that dumb skank. I really wish I never met her but its too late now.
I want to be facebook friends with ya'll I feel like this place is gonna get shut down any day now. Really it's just us at this point. I don't know how to find anyone. I remember back in my last go around here in 2008 I found Mexi-melt's myspace page but never friended him.I just feel like one day I'll come here and it'll say page not found. And it won't be some awesome Good Will Hunting moment.
Watching Crazy, Stupid Love. Getting emotional.
That reminds me - anyone ever wonder if any of the "new" accounts is Negreanu? Like, he has this site that in its heyday probably had half a million monthly unique visitors, now it's just us, and he's trying to hold on to FCP through the Sick thread?

Been loading a bunch of pages before flights and catching up that way...makes it easy to catch up but not post. Napa (RE a post you made a week or so ago) - keep rocking the boat shoes, but you need to get these. Can't see them, don't really feel them, but they prevent your boat shoes from smelling.

Oh, and yes, get the member's only jacket Napa. You'll look good.

I'm upset because I let myself feel upbeat about a situation that pretty obviously won't improve. the repeated letdowns, it's not like I haven't been here and done this several times in the last few years.
hope really just needs to go **** itself.
sorry, I'm done posting here today.
There's a nice quote that comes to mind:
"If at first you don't succeed, you're like everyone else who went on to greatness."
There will always be naysayers. They don't want to see you succeed, because then they feel worse about themselves not succeeding. So they try to talk you out of trying. What's the harm in trying? Don't let them talk you out of something before you even try. Get your sht together. [/rant]

Sup Napa.
I think both of those posters give off the vibe we're trying to create for you. Two thumbs up in my book.
In Seattle for work. 85 and sunny today. I may have to move here. Although we went to a seafood place for dinner, and Dawson doesn't eat seafood.
Saw on facebook my guy Shake bought that badass chainsaw. Then came on here and read how much it costs. Had a good chuckle at that.

got my GMAT study materials today. **** yea, progress. thinking about signing up for a C++ course or something at a community college this summer.
Check out CodeAcademy

Wait, were you talking about the proverbial you kids or did you have any advice for me specifically? Because I'd really like to hear it. I'm constantly worried I'm not doing something I should be.
Edit: also sick jacket brah. I didn't end up copping that one I posted. I'm only making associate money. Plus I forgot about it.
Going to the casino tonight. Gonna play some 1/2. And probably some blackjack and craps.
Nappy you're in great shape. You're an associate at a public accounting firm, and it sounds like the people like you. You're going to screw up, they know that, your only job is to learn from your mistakes. You'll be fine.
Pretty sure he suggested less faggotry and more confidence.
Just a guess
More or less. People need to go out there and get what they want, stop making excuses, stop making it easy for people to say no. Maybe I discount how lucky I got, but when I made up my mind to get onto the buyside, I got a ton of no's. Persistence got me where I wanted to be.
being a landlord sounds like a huge pain in the ass. I know, most things that get you ahead involve something that's a pain in the ass. I'm just saying.
I really disagree with the idea that napa's doing something wrong. he's earning a lot of money (for his generation) doing what he's intended to do from day one. suited, also in the track he wants to be in. I think dawson was mostly intending to try to make shake feel bad about himself. and, bravo, I say.
No no, shake's doing way better than he should. I'm impressed he's still alive.

i picture dawson being this kind of awesome:
I like this guy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHJ5oHFpCM0
Cubs fan, and spills less beer. But I'd be happy being as awesome as either.
What are you doing now? And I want to hear you rant about jobs and be a dick. You're a smart successful dude. You know a thing or two. Glad my misery is of some amusement.
Job? Venture capital. Life? Getting married soon. Bought a condo a couple blocks from Wrigley Field.Tearing it up in men's league hockey.Buying sweet jackets like my boy napa (Link).
I deleted the rant. Same sht I've said before. No need to say it again. Just hate seeing you kids wasting your talents.

I stopped adding content because:
1. I have less time now. I work a lot more. When I was doing M&A consulting, I had down time between deals. Now, not so much. When I'm not at work, I'm hanging out with my finacee or friends.
2. My stories aren't that crazy anymore. When I was in college, or just out of college, I had good stuff to add. I'm boring now.
3. I end up ranting (see below) when people start talking about jobs. I think I come off as a dick in those situations.
When the fiancee's out of town, or if I'm traveling for work, I check out the site. Some of you guys are pretty funny. Hearing stories about SA, Napa, Shake et al. not getting laid never gets old.

maybe I'll just send them both flowers and candy. that might work.
Gotta have the buddy send an email to the HR person.
Someone sent us a $100 gift card for Ruth's Chris - didn't get an interview.
My sister got that interview with Berkshire Hathaway for some hr job. She's always been kind of dumb, but objectively speaking, she's not an ugly looking girl and so she'll probably get it and then make more right out of college than I do 3 years removed.
That's awesome. From Warren Buffett's Annual Letter in 2012: "Berkshire’s yearend employment totaled a record 288,462 (see page 106 for details), up 17,604 from last year. Our headquarters crew, however, remained unchanged at 24. No sense going crazy." - headquarter crew = the people who actual work for Berkshire.

Sorry, Napa. I hope you have a nice, albeit incredibly short, life.
