  1. oh, i agree completely. i just think that it's a sort of move to make that might sway some minds that are more, uh, economically?-minded. personally, i could care less whether certain forms of punishment cost more than others (to a point, i suppose--i wouldn't like to poke someone with uranium-tipped platinum daggers or something, but yeah), but i know that it's often argued, incorrectly, that life without parole costs states more than killing a prisoner. it's just wrong, on average, since all states have mandatory appeals, and a sizeable number of death penalty cases are tried on both sides w
  2. this seems like a nice way of saying revenge. :)imo, the #1 reason why the death penalty shouldn't be used is that our legal system isn't perfect, and killing someone renders it impossible to set him/her free based on new evidence in the future.it's also more expensive, on average, than a life sentence, a bit eye-for-an-eye-ish, and no more effective at removing someone from society than a supermax prison.but that doesn't mean that certain crimes, including the one in the OP, aren't horrific and unthinkable.

  15. awesome, thanks guys!
  16. this seems like a good a place as any to ask, i guess...my gf and i (and our two cats) will be moving from buffalo to northern saskatchewan this august, and we're unsure of the best/safest way to get the cats there. we had planned on flying them there with my gf while i make the multi-day drive, but that seems more than a little unsafe after reading everything here so far. if all else fails, i suppose that we can drive them and try to sneak them into hotels, since their safety is of more concern to us than money/ease, but if anyone has any better thoughts, fire away.
  17. limbaugh, hannity, bg, most of the conservatives that have posted in the pelosi thread and this one.fwiw, i'm all for a complete investigation into everything, and i'd make a case for everyone who knew about the waterboarding of enemy combatants absolutely, across the board, going to jail. pelosi, cheney, whoever. we live in a country where you can be convicted as a passive accomplice to most violent crimes, and being a government official shouldn't get you a pass in that regard.
  18. i'm glad vb posted that. like, super glad.i actually gained a lot of respect for mancow for being able/willing to change his mind on things.
  19. just a couple points:1. of course waterboarding is torture. we convicted japanese soldiers on this exact point after WW2. this is not something that changes just because the new enemy has towels on their heads. either grow a pair and attempt to make the argument that jack bauer-style interrogation is somehow justifiable or own up to the fact that you don't think that it's necessary for us to live up to the same moral compass that we have in the past, but don't play some stupid rhetorical word game where you attempt to redefine a word that we've already defined ourselves. 2. as vb said, saying
  20. just wait till i introduce you to smack!
  21. lol, oddly, i haven't gotten high in like 2 months.those ****ing drug tests for work.
  22. this is true for the short term, but it's worth saying that because of the average life span of most cars, one shouldn't be especially concerned with driving around a 12mpg buick for fear of burning some coal to build a new prius.part of the problem with this sort of approach is that it fails to acknowledge that as more people show a preference for new, fuel efficient cars, the industry will use this trend to make the process of creating NiCd (or hopefully, soon, Li) batteries a whole lot more efficient than it is today. whether they are doing this to make money or reduce emissions doesn't rea
  23. my dad had TC when i was 2 and still managed to create my sister thereafter, as well as be cancer free for 25 years, if that helps.since it's somewhat hereditary, i've had a long talk with him about it and he made it quite clear to me that his doctor told him that if you catch it early, you have very little to worry about. honestly, so i hope that makes you feel a little better.nevertheless, i'll keep you in my thoughts, and i hope the results come back negative for you.
  24. b/3b the flop, cincy :)for the record, too, i did actually get a day job.
  25. it's worth saying that if you're "unsure" about this issue, you are pretty much pro-choice unless you don't understand what pro-choice means.it's also worth saying that polls and reality are two profoundly different things.
